What think you of the name Effie (or spelt Effy?)

WonkyWilly Fri 30-Nov-12 17:13:51

I like it but only if you spell it Effie!

lancaster Fri 30-Nov-12 17:15:14

my dds name with an ie, still often wonder if I should have gone with y though!

Snowflakepie Fri 30-Nov-12 17:31:16

Sounds like iffy to me, I wouldn't. But the ie spelling is better of the two.

Light100 Fri 30-Nov-12 17:37:54

Really like it, is it short for anything?

spiderlight Fri 30-Nov-12 17:38:39

I'd wonder what it was short for. It's pretty though - makes me think of a fey, pixie-like child.

Greensleeves Fri 30-Nov-12 17:40:35

I think it is really pretty, but there is one at our school and my ds2 told me some of the older ones call her "eff off Effie" sad

But I think if children are going to be beastly they will find something. Doesn't mean you shouldn't use whatever name you like.

I know a Evelyn who goes by Effie

PuffPants Fri 30-Nov-12 18:58:19

I'm really sorry but it makes me think "F off" or "effing" as in you know what.

VivaLeBeaver Fri 30-Nov-12 19:08:16

I know an Effie at work I also had a great aunt Effie, which must have been short for something but not sure what.

Astralabe Fri 30-Nov-12 19:17:28

Its short for Euphemia. There was a character called Effie in the series of Skins before last who was quite cool, and I thought it was nice then - but definitely sounds like a shortened version of something and I'm not sure about Euphemia.

VivaLeBeaver Fri 30-Nov-12 19:25:08

How's it pronounced - Eff-eema?

VivaLeBeaver Fri 30-Nov-12 19:25:36

eff-emmia even?

Astralabe Fri 30-Nov-12 19:55:07

The Effie in Skins was Elizabeth wasn't she?

I once met a girl who was known as Effie. I think her full name was something like Effracine (it was said Eff-ra-cee-nee - never knew her well enough to see how you spelled it).

Before DD was born I had a dream that told me I had to name her Iphigenia, Effy for short. Strangely, I didn't do as the dream suggested...

EmpressOfTheNorthPole Fri 30-Nov-12 22:20:16

I'm sorry but I'm with Puffpants, it reminds me of effing.

If it's short for Elizabeth she's got something to fall back on.

fatzak Fri 30-Nov-12 22:28:32

Can also be short for Eleftheria or Efthalia I think? Quite a common name in Greece.

Iris1 Fri 30-Nov-12 22:28:33

I think its good as nn for Elizabeth. Not quite the same but I absolutely love Elfie for a girl nn for Eleanor. Bit softer than Effy but very similar.

Mintyy Fri 30-Nov-12 22:30:36

I'm afraid its not my cup of tea. I generally only post on the baby names thread if I have something positive to say, so I'm sorry about that. It makes me think of someone ineffectual for some reason.

mewkins Fri 30-Nov-12 22:30:43

Yep Effie in Skins was short for Elizabeth. I have known two Effies, both Greek and short for Efrosini which is apparently a very popular name in Greece and a very popular shortening.

msrisotto Fri 30-Nov-12 22:32:05

When I saw the thread title, I thought of "eff off".

GW297 Fri 30-Nov-12 22:33:19

Eefie?

LDNmummy Fri 30-Nov-12 22:35:39

This is the abbreviation to my DD's middle name and I love it.

Hers is a foreign name and I didn't pick it as it was down to custom but I still love it.

I actually prefer the abbreviated version to the actual version which is great because its what all the grandparents call her.
