Pronounced Arr-yah. If you heard of someone calling their child this name, would you make any assumptions about what her parents were like/ what job they did?

Like Hitler and go on EDL marches would be my best guess. I don't think it's very pretty either, what about Aria or Anya instead?

SpringHeeledJack Fri 23-Nov-12 16:49:32

Not sure what their jobs are but it involves crystals, homeopathy, energy fields and tinkling bells

Potters. I think they'd make pots. Ugly cups etc.

Bumpsadaisie Fri 23-Nov-12 17:18:27

I'll give you my honest answer - my first thought would be that they were fascist white supremacists (Aryan). Sorry!

How mn
A thread that becomes about pirate sex

Not having seen GOT I still don't think it has good connotations

RillaBlythe Fri 23-Nov-12 17:46:06

Make swastikas.

EmpressOfTheMadBoxOfFrogs Fri 23-Nov-12 17:48:29

Not having seen Game of Thrones I'd think Third Reich too, sorry.

DilysPrice Fri 23-Nov-12 17:50:19

IT, both of them.

hatebeak Fri 23-Nov-12 17:53:12

Again, American neo-Nazis stockpiling arms in a mountain hideaway. Sorry...
Ariadne, Ariel, Soraya instead?

DilysPrice Fri 23-Nov-12 18:01:36

But DD (10), who is not allowed to watch GOT funnily enough, says "I'd assume they didn't know much about the Second World War".

DilysPrice Fri 23-Nov-12 18:02:24

...which I think is sweet of DD, she assumes ignorance rather than Nazism.

lljkk Fri 23-Nov-12 19:40:26

Opera or music fans.

YummyHoney Fri 23-Nov-12 19:43:55

Nothing of any value to society .

mamalovesmojitos Fri 23-Nov-12 19:45:37

Thanks BOF, just spluttered a glass of red over my phone! My thoughts exactly.

Bonsoir Fri 23-Nov-12 19:46:11

Oh, there is an Arya in my DD's year at school in Paris. His father is a professor of mathematics (at Columbia) and his mother is a graphic designer.

Bonsoir Fri 23-Nov-12 19:46:47

Oh, and both Arya's parents are from the Iranian diaspora.

MaMattoo Fri 23-Nov-12 19:53:05

You do know that the word means noble, truthful, great...yes?
What hitler and co did to the name and its meaning is recent history.
The god who is worshipped on Diwali is called 'arya-putra' or son of the noble one.

The arya I know is the son of a development economist and social scientist.

mercibucket Fri 23-Nov-12 20:20:35

I think most of us are thinking along those lines, mamattoo: either neo-nazi ('recent history as you call it)or hippy (you do know it means noble, truthful, great .. Yes? Said while waving incense and wearing crystals)
There is also the 'foreign' option. Like bonsoir, the only people I know with similar names are from Iran

Haven't read the thread. I would pronounce it A-ree-yah if I hadn't been told. The parents would be Indian doctors.

PropositionJoe Fri 23-Nov-12 20:30:53

Oh yes - and I'd think it was a boy

3b1g Fri 23-Nov-12 20:33:19

The father would be called Ned (short for Eddard) and would be the Lord of a castle in the North. The mother would be called Catelyn.
Arya is a strong character and a good role model though.
