Paulie for a boy
Paul is a family name and so feeling the pressure of carrying on the tradition
I am looking a nicer and different version of the standard name Paul
what do you think?
or should it be spelt Pauly?
Help!

I think it's Paulie. It's the name of the head mafioso in goodfellas!
There are other versions too - Paulo, Pablo for example.

Paul is lovely, and very unusual now I should think. Paulie as a given name is a monstrosity. Call him Paul and use Paulie as a nn if you must.

PercyFilth Fri 10-Feb-12 10:55:23

Agree with tummytickler. Even as a nn, "Paulie" is something a boy would grow out of VERY quickly.

AThingInYourLife Fri 10-Feb-12 10:58:16

Pauli is a mobster name, it's terrible.

Paul is not good either.

Just use it as a second name and give your child a name you actually like.

You ar naming an adult, not a baby. Paulie is bonkers for a middle aged merchant banker.

And you really really don't want him to spend the next 80 years saying "No, i's not Paul- it's Paulie. Yes, I know- my mother was having a mad moment"

hellokitty123 Fri 10-Feb-12 11:19:12

Paulie/Pauly looks and sounds very ugly imo, sorry. And is very close to Pauline.

If you feel the need to/want to carry on the family tradition of using Paul, then use Paul as it is imo.

Eeerrr seeker - not sure middle-aged merchant banker is either something to aspire to or something most people want to imagine their unborn child becoming.

Paul is a fine name - I'd steer away from Paulie.

seeker Fri 10-Feb-12 11:28:06

I know- and I would loath it if that's what mine became. But you have to cover all eventualities! And whatever th becom it will certainly be an adult and thy should be named accordingly.

PopcornBiscuit Fri 10-Feb-12 11:41:52

Paulie sounds like a cute version of Pauline. Not suitable for a grown man, sorry.

bbaloo Fri 10-Feb-12 12:02:40

OK, definitely been put off the name Paulie, which looks like a good thing now
paul is ok but a bit short
sad

PopcornBiscuit Fri 10-Feb-12 12:17:54

I think Paul on its own is fine. Paulson, Pablo and Paulos are also variations of Paul. Or how about Felix (a Biblical character from St Paul's time) or Saul (the Hebrew name of the apostle Paul)?

SoupDragon Fri 10-Feb-12 12:19:01

Dreadful.

If you don't like Paul, use it as a middle name.

IBlameThatcher Fri 10-Feb-12 12:20:51

How about John-Paul? Paulie sounds the same as poorly which can't be a good thing ....

bbaloo Fri 10-Feb-12 12:39:51

Popcornbiscuit - some good suggestions there
paulos - is that Spanish?
Paulson sounds much nicer than Paul

seeker Fri 10-Feb-12 12:46:19

Paulson doesn't sound much nicer then Paul, you know- it sounds made up and is difficult to say. Paulo?

Or just use it as a second name. That's the best place for family names unless th are lovely < seeker smugly remembers th delight with which she reqlized that her fqvouriteboy's name was also q massively important fqmily name in her dp's family>

bbaloo Fri 10-Feb-12 13:21:13

i think it's between Paulo and Pablo
which one?

seeker Fri 10-Feb-12 14:05:21

Pablo is the Spanish for Peter, isn't it, not Paul?

PopcornBiscuit Fri 10-Feb-12 14:52:13

Pedro is Spanish for Peter.

pranma Fri 10-Feb-12 16:39:30

Paolo is lovely I think

I like Paulo. But as another poster suggested I love something like John Paul.

PercyFilth Fri 10-Feb-12 18:18:19

Spanish - Pablo
Italian - Paolo
Portuguese - Paulo

And there will be other variations, such as the East European Pavel. However I tend to think that these should only be used by those who have some connection or background there.

Karbea Fri 10-Feb-12 18:29:58

Pauly sounds like a budgies name to me, Paul is better.

FaithHopeAndKevin Fri 10-Feb-12 18:32:17

Is Saul stretching it?

I think Paul is a mighty fine second name grin
