Walter must be from german origins? and I knew a little girl named Nola as it was meant to be a german and irish name.

not a lot of fact there, but those are 2 i think of as german-ish!

I have a German friend called Heike, (pronounced Hika in english). I have always like it. I think the mail version would be Heiko.

telsa and strippybear, your suggestions would be like calling a baby in the UK Rosemary or Susan - a very 1970s name smile. Especially Norbert, Manfred, Gerhard, Heike - they are VERY unfashionable at the moment.

I know - but as here, what comes around goes around!

Some names that work in both English and German, and also are pronounced very similarly:

Philip, Marcus, Lucas, Anton, Max, Ben, Frank, Tobias, Tristan, Martin

Tessa, Dora, Louisa, Anna, Natalie, Connie, Lilly, Stella, Helen, Fiona

There's also some names like Zoe, Grace and Alice that are pronounced the English way in Germany, well, usually, at least by younger people.

Ilse/Ilsa - would that be old lady chic in Germany?
