Baby names

same name in family

Have just found out at my 20 wk scan that my baby is a boy. Really liked the name Liam last time but it was our second choice and we eventually went with the first choice. Coincidently when my neice had her baby around the same time she called her baby Liam. This time I'm in a different relationship and both my DP and I like the name but I wondered whether we ought to use it or not seeing it is already in my extended family. We don't actually see my neice and her family often as they live quite along way away, but I would be interested in other peoples opinions on this as it would mean my mum would have both a grandson and greatgrandson with the same name.
Many thanks

Do you see your mum a lot? Does she see her GGC a lot? I think you need to speak to the neice and ask her would she be ok with it. Make a big fuss about what a gorgeous name it is and see how she feels.

However, I think your Liam will always be known as 'little Liam' or Liam2 or the other Liam, it's might grate after a while....

I don't think I would do it. Might be different if it was a cousin or perhaps cousin's kid that you didn't see, but I think this is too close in terms of family ties, regardless of how often you see her. Don't forget your brother/sister is also going to be a grandparent to your niece's Liam, and an aunt/uncle to yours. So it's not just your Mum's connection to worry about. Try and think of something else.

Hi thanks for the replies
LydiaWickham- no I don't see my mum because of a family row
QueenVictoria42-I see what you mean about my brother. I don't want to upset him but on the other hand we are a bit stuck as have been thinking about names from the very beginning and have always been stuck for a boys name.
Oh well, still half the pregnancy to go so will see if we can come up with something else.
Thanks for your opinions :)

I think we could find you a whole list of gorgeous boys names if you need ideas. Ask your DP for other ideas from his family, any godfathers or great uncles with cool names?

Issac (could be Zac for short)
Jacob (Jake)
Jasper
Ben
Nathan
Cameron
Scott (v underused these days!)
Jeremiah (Jerry?)
Luke

Hi
Thanks LydiaWickham for the suggestions. I don't really want an old-fashioned name, would prefer something modern.
Quite like Jake and really like Ben -already have a DS with that name :) Lukes not too bad either. Have found it helpful looking on here and hopefully will come up with a name soon.
Thanks again :)

I have compiled a list of beautiful male names that you may want to consider:

Mack
Pedrick
Nilez
Kane
Cane
Cayn
Caine
Crane
Wilberforce
Heidrich
Mohammed
Muhammed
Mahammed
Kaine
Porch
Peter
Barley
and Andrew.

Let me know if any of these take your fancy. ;)
Some of these I believe may be middle eastern.

Ben is a lovely name - so we have to find a name that also sounds 'right' with Ben... I think Luke and Jake both worth well with Ben.

What about Miles?

How about asking her? some times coming straight out with it if you can saves a lot of second guessing? I know its caused uproar on here the last few days but I also noticed that a lot of people said it would be an non-issue for them so you might just be able to keep your chosen name, and everyone else happy :)

My husband has two cousins with the same name. One of them is known in the family by her first and middle names to avoid confusion.

No idea how the parents felt about it at the time as I've never been in a position to ask!

I'd just ask your niece, if she minds.

My mum had a friend who was pregnant the same time as her, about two months behind. After mum named me, her friend said to my mum that it had been planning to use, and would my mum mind if she still used it. Mum took it as a compliment, and didn't mind the least.

Luke is cool and less popular than Liam right now I think!

How about Milo?

If you like Jake, how about Jago?

Many thanks for all your replies and suggestions :) It really helps to get other peoples opinions. Still really liike Liam but there are a couple of other options. Will ponder over it and see what we come up with.
Thanks again
