I want to call my baby Avocado

Not really.

Hear me out...

Okay, I like Persimmon (nn Persi) (which is still in the running) but everyone was horrified to the point where I have a seed of doubt sown in my mind.

So... my children have taken to calling the baby Avocado, and I was idly wondering if there was a nice Latin name for Avocado or an Avocado flower or something, and it turns out that the Avocado is of the genus Persea - do you reckon it's pronounced Percy or Persee-ay?

And, if you're feeling indulgent, can you think of anything else Avocado-y that might work? (But don't just be cutting and acerbic) (unless it's also funny).

Is it like the Playground test? That's when you imagine shouting your chosen name across a crowded playground.

eg: :"AVOCAAAAAAAAAAAADO!" grin

vividgingerchilli Sun 02-Oct-11 16:27:13

What is the "walk into room" test?!

ChippingIn Sun 02-Oct-11 14:24:55

For the love of god your hormones really are playing up aren't they grin

Avocado is better than Persimmon!! Neither of them pass the 'walk into the room test' IMO

Your poor poor DH sad

grin

Persimmon - will he/she be a builder when she/he grows up?!

Struggling to imagine calling the register and getting to Persimmon...or Avocado.. At least it's original!

< swoon > at Persimmon Loveday.

It makes me want a pink one to call that. Go on, do it.

My sis is pregnant, i wander if i can convince her to have a Persimmon Loveday...

ShoutyHamster Sun 02-Oct-11 10:34:00

Eeek Persimmon Loveday totally goes against my suggestion for a sensible mn BUT is probably the most amazing name I've heard for ages!

My DH vetoed Loveday (grr)

twooter Sun 02-Oct-11 08:46:08

If you like persimmon, how about Barrett (as an alternative home build) ?

Carmel206 Sun 02-Oct-11 07:49:09

the irish word for avocado is abhcoide (avcweede) not great i grant you but possibly other languages may have better sounding translations?

seeker Sun 02-Oct-11 07:01:19

Dust - as "All flesh is......."

seeker Sun 02-Oct-11 07:00:05

<starts rearguard action>

Promise won't call her Percy then. Even if you spell it Persi.

allhailtheaubergine Sun 02-Oct-11 06:52:20

Why is Dust a Puritan name?

Hooray! 2 votes for Persimmon. Sorry to all the haters, I really think if this baby is a little girl she will be Persimmon.

TooImmature2BDumbledore Sat 01-Oct-11 22:49:22

Damn, DH has just vetoed Dust. And Loveday. If I ever write a book, the main character will be called Loveday.

Lettice?

DesertOrchid Sat 01-Oct-11 18:14:38

I rather like Persimmon, I am glad that's still up there!

allhailtheaubergine Sat 01-Oct-11 16:57:48

I do like Bonniface and Loveday.

seeker Sat 01-Oct-11 16:46:25

What about reintroducing Puritan names? PraiseGod , Thankfulness, Diffidence, Dust......

allhailtheaubergine Sat 01-Oct-11 16:38:29

Yeah okay. After due consideration I take it back - Clemency does not belong with Chastity, Patience and Doormat. It is a good name, and I do know a chap called Clement.

I still think Reasonableness is a good name.

seeker Sat 01-Oct-11 14:46:54

All hail- I bet there are as many boys called Clement as girls called Clemency!

ShoutyHamster Sat 01-Oct-11 09:16:49

Go with Persimmon.

Once you think about it for a bit, it is lovely. It just isn't what we're used to. Why is Persimmon any different as a word to name someone than Penelope or Jonathan?

Persi, Perri, Mimmi, Penny, Sim - all possible nicknames.

I think it's absolutely fine and that she is likely to love it, and to cover your backs give her a very normal mn. Persimmon Anna, Persimmon Lucy, Persimmon Sophia. Worst case scenario, she HATES it and uses her mn.

allhailtheaubergine Sat 01-Oct-11 08:18:22

No. Even I can see that Avocado is a silly name. Can you imagine walking into a room and saying "hi there, I'm Avocado"?

Tigerlilly is nice. But we have a close friend called something very similar so it's not on the list.

largeginandtonic Fri 30-Sep-11 20:23:31

I quite like it. Just plain old Avocado.

I will be a terrible influence as my dc have mostly bonkers names.

DD1 had a narrow escape from Tiger Lily. Dc8 is due in 8 weeks, i did have a name picked but am wavering.

RnB Fri 30-Sep-11 20:06:18

I wanted to call ds1 Lupin. Pressure stopped that from happening angry

allhailtheaubergine Fri 30-Sep-11 20:04:32

It is, but you don't get boys called Clemency. Grace is a lovely name and a wonderful attribute, but it somehow rankles that you don't get boys called Athleticism or Reasonableness.

seeker Fri 30-Sep-11 19:39:04

Clemency isn't a soppy female virtue- it's a wonderful unisex attribute.

Mind you, I speak as a woman who nearly 16 years ago thought that Grace was a charmingly old fashioned and incredibly unusual name. And who was horrified to discover that Christian friends thought that we had chosen the name because we had finally had a child after 20 years of trying! When in fact it took us 20 years to get round to it, and she arrived precisely 9 months after we first decided we might quite ike a baby!

NotADudeExactly Fri 30-Sep-11 19:32:28

(Disgrace would be a bit too much, I suppose.)

NotADudeExactly Fri 30-Sep-11 19:31:51

Faithless?

I'd go with it - but DH is a theist!
