I want to call my baby Avocado

Not really.

Hear me out...

Okay, I like Persimmon (nn Persi) (which is still in the running) but everyone was horrified to the point where I have a seed of doubt sown in my mind.

So... my children have taken to calling the baby Avocado, and I was idly wondering if there was a nice Latin name for Avocado or an Avocado flower or something, and it turns out that the Avocado is of the genus Persea - do you reckon it's pronounced Percy or Persee-ay?

And, if you're feeling indulgent, can you think of anything else Avocado-y that might work? (But don't just be cutting and acerbic) (unless it's also funny).

I would say per-SAY-a.

If you have fond childhood memories of Anne of Green Gables, there is a character called Persis in one of the later books. Quite a nice one, too.

See? That was cutting and funny. You can stay.

Per-SAY-a. Hmmm. Don't think I like that. You could well be right though.

Persis is okay.

Avocado comes from the latin American 'ahuacatl' meaning testicle!! Not very pretty really...

"The word 'avocado' comes from the Spanish aguacate which in turn comes from the Nahuatl word ahuácatl (testicle, a reference to the shape of the fruit)"

testicle it is then!

Grin @ Avocado Baby. If I work out an Avocado-y name I'll have to get that!

I'd say it purr-see-a - like the feminine of Perseus.

Or Eve Ocado.

You will get many copies of this if you do stick with Avocado.

Just back from the farm shop where they are selling Quince, in season atm. Kind of cute. (If you want to stick to the fruit and veg theme.)

Testicle? Back to Plum, then?

Testicla for a girl presumably.

Oh arse. Does it really come from testicle?

Erm, I'd steer clear of using 'avocado' itself though. It is derived from the native word for testicle.

So, if you go for it, I'd suggest using it for a boy Grin

I keep x-posting.

Must try harder.

Persis means 'Persian woman' which my baby won't be, so I don't think that works.

I'm not very good with funny, but I did find this name pronouncer which pronounces it persee. Definitely prefer that to perseea/persaya

I'm loving this saga.

You're going to end up calling her Jane.

You'll have gone round full circle, then imploded and sort of become a baby name black hole.

Why not Persephone??
