Judge my names

Only 12 weeks, but entering 5th week off work with HG. Bored. Have been thinking of names (when not counting ceiling tiles). Did the same with DS actually, and he got the name I came up with then, which I still love.

It is tradition in our family to have reasons for names (other than we just like them) and to have 3 first names. I do, DS does, so DC2 will have to be fair! Our surname is v dull ordinary English occupation surname (not Baker, but that kind of thing). Having grown up with a very unusual name for my age (v common and popular now) and now living in an old pit village, I am not into odd, unusual, standy-out names at all.

Boy:
Frederick Michael James (Freddie)
(DH's Grandad, my dad (died 1993), mum's "new" partner of about 10 years now. I think he would be very chuffed, sign of acceptance etc. And I really like him. Also not weird with Dad's name as he died, no animosity or ought )

Girl:
Evelyn Joyce Hope (Evie)
(my granny, DH's granny who died in Feb this year, the village where DH and I first lived)

Freddie - meh. Loads of them about. Prefer James or Michael to be honest.

Evelyn - beautiful. But lots of Evies and Evas around at the moment too.

I think Freddie is great - and you have lovely reasons for why it's got strong family ties.

I agree that there seem to be a lot of Evies around at the moment, but it is beautiful. She could be Eve for short, which I think sounds a bit 'stronger' or a name a child can grow into if you see what I mean.

I don't think either of them (IMO) are ridiculously popular up here, and love Evelyn. (eev-lyn or ev-elyn though?) I do prefer Eva to Evie as a nn though. Evelyn is also my Grandmother's name.

I know that Freddie and Evie are v popular - apparently, but I hang out with a lot of 2-3 year olds, and I have never met a child with either of these names. ANd I hated havinga an usual name when I was growing up. Would have loved to have been "Sarah C" or something!

The names may not abbreviate to Freddie and Evie in the end, it is the main names I am more concerned with. Could be Fred or Rick or Eve or Lynnie or Curly or Blondie or Ratfink....

And I the lovely accent around here does not lend itself to first names beginning with H, so Hope as a first name is out.

You have lovely reasons to use each name, so not much judging needed really I think they are popular but not in a 'every second child you meet' way.

Evelyn Joyce Hope (Evie) - also very nice, if you're not concerned about Evie being so popular. Hope would be a nice first name too.

Thank you Ursula, that is a lovely comment. Now we just have to find out what it is, then I have to persuade DH. Although he needed no persuading with DS (whos name is very similar style). I think an HG pg (both of them!) and an emcs gives me some bargaining power.

I always think it's nice to have family names or names with meaning to you, my dd's first middle name is from a song that is important to us and her second is after my dear gran. I don't care what anyone thinks of them because they mean so much!

I really don't mind the popularity of Evie, as I said, I don't know a single child with this name, and I know LOADS of kids. In fact, I only know one at all and she is 19.

I really like both of those. I know there are a lot of Evies but if you don't mind that, then it's a beautiful name. I like the idea of making it Evelyn too! beautiful. If she wants when she's older she can be the Evie that is actually an Evelyn. prefer Joy to Joyce though.

Joyce not negotiable I am afraid. DOn't particularly liek it, but was DH's grandma, and I would have been about a week pg when she died, so very appropriate.

My favourite toddler group has one of each. But that's a sign of shared good taste, not a reason to be put off.

Both very nice. I prefer Evelyn to Evie. Comiserations on the HG. I had it with my first. Was just sick as a dog with my second.
