Shirley is my favourite name ever - I love it.
Dh has always said it is a bit close to dd2's name, but last night he said maybe that does not matter
So it is now a possibility. It is top of the list for me now I know dh would possibly use it. Dh prefers the other names on our list but could win him over i think.
So, what do you think?

I hate it. Can't imagine a child just old bat that Bullied me at work.

But it's all subjective

Awful! Very dated.

Nooo. Not this century.

It's dated, because it exploded in popularity with Shirley Temple, so it was a teenage name in the 1950s, and there are lots one in their 70s.

On the "return of the Granny names" principle, it's probably due a come-back.

I like it, and it has good associations for me.

I can't help thinking of Leslie Nielson when I hear that name "Don't call me Shirley" Wink

I was about to post that.

Your unborn child is speaking to you through Lesley Nielson.

Don't do it!

I don't dislike it, and agree it will probably cone back into fashion at some point. I am in my 40's and went to school with an Emily, and everyone thought that was an old ladies name and dated. It certainly doesn't have those associations now.

It makes me think of Shirley from EastEnders, which is not ideal for a small baby. Although I always say my DD was the spit of Phil Mitchell as a newborn. So hey ho.

I automatically think of the sitcom "Desmonds". Brilliant programme. The wife was called Shirley. Love Shirley spoken with a Jamaican accent. Otherwise not so much tbh.

Thank you Allie It is pretty! If you forget about the fact it is quite dated isn't it lovely?
I don't watch soaps so no idea who Shirley in EE is.
GRW Does that mean by the time she is 30 she will have a fashionable name Grin
I am surprised by the strong dislike actually.
Is it just because it sounds old?
Maybe when there are a few of them running around it will seem more current, and therefore more appealing?
I think a little Shirley would be cute, and it is quite grown up also.
I suppose we will have to agree to disagree Grin

Tummytickler, if you and DH like it obviously go for it. I'm not a fan either and I do watch eASTENDERS WHICH DOES NOT ENDEARE ONE TO THE NAME, (Doh - caps lock). But you could be right about the 30 year old with a fasionable name! Grin
