Manon - teasing potential

for a girl. I was sometimes asked when I was little if I was a boy or a girl Blush - to do with my horrible boys haircut and clothes I think. But do you think if my daughter was to get similar questions, the name Manon might turn into "man" and become distressing? Weird q, I know!

I really, really like it. Smile And if a child is going to be cruel, they'll find anything. It's a great name.

In French it works, but in English or German Manon will be pronounced Man-onn. Not very feminine sounding imo.

It doesn't sound nice in English, I'm afraid.

HUGE potential for being teased at High School 'There's Manon - she likes a Man On......'

Report

Man on top
Man on the moon
Man on a mission (or worse, manon emission)

... Yup there is potential.

On the other hand it is a lovely name. And if you don't give them a name that's easy to take the piss out of they will just get called Fatty Smith or Specky Jones or whatever.

How about you call her Manon, but just to be on the safe side you sign her up for karate lessons too?

"Man on yer face" was the first thing I thought of. ... Apparently I've been reading too much AIBU. Ahem.

Are you welsh? If you live in a welsh speaking area then no problem,as it is a classic welsh name, but in England maybe.A grown up Manon I know does get "man on top" all the time.

Lovely, lovely name, but I wouldn't trust English-speaking teenagers with it sadly.

Any chance you might emigrate? :o

I have only ever known one when I was living in Cardiff but she hated it and said that she was always taunted at school with "Man on Women" so I would never use it.

I think hellymelly is right it depends where you live but my friend was teased in Wales so I'd be very concerned if there was any chance you could move away from Wales.

Reminds me of watching footy when one of the opposing players is tracking one of our players down the field without him noticing. Cue screams from the stands of "man on!"

How is it supposed to be pn?

It's great - go for it.

I think kids will find ways of making fun of all names.

Although I was told by a 15 year old the other day that one is not allowed to make fun of the name Mohammed because it would be disrespectful.

Read / see Manon Lescaut... The "heroine" was a courtesan, which many would equate to be a hooker in modern terms.

True but more people have read/seen 'Jean de Florette' than 'Manon Lescaut'. Pagnol is seen as being the cause of the names 'revival' in France.

Manon is the diminutive of Marianne or Marie-Anne. If you like the longer versions, you could perhaps put something different on her birth certificate but call her Manon so that she has the option to change it if she gets teased.

DD had a friend called Manon. All was well with her name until the age of fourish when they learned to read. Manon became Boyon, Ladon, chapon essentially any male thing you could add the word on too.
