Would you assume she is a Megan?

No, Margaret.

I'd also think of the newspaper astrologer.

Thank you all!

Is Meg actually a name in its own right, does anybody know?

Merle I actually do know of a sheepdog called Meg! But I still like it!

I would think Megan.

I know lots of Megans and they all go by Meg, Megs, Megz or Smeg.

Same here, I have a cousin called Megan and she is known as Meg.

I love it. Wouldn't have thought it as a name in it's own right, but never mind..it's still lovely :)

Am I on my own in thinking it's in the same sort of category as Kate and Beth? Both used as full names but originate from long traditional names? I really want it to be an actual name!! Grin

I agree it's like Kate & Beth. I would use it as a name on it's own and it wouldn't bother me if people thought otherwise!

Megan definitely. It'd be Peggy or Maggie for Margaret not Meg I would of thought. I too would use it as a name in it's own right. Meg Matthews, Meg Ryan.

Isn't Megan the Welsh form of Meg?

Meg is historically a short form of Margaret, so Meg and Megan are just variants of the same nn.

Peggy is also a nn: quite why there's the M/P change is beyond me, but this isn't the only example from older names - Molly and Polly are linked nicknames for Mary.

Other nn for Margaret include Meggie, Maggie, Margie, Marge, Margot, Madge, Grete, Gretta, Rita.

I would think MArgaret. In Little Women Meg is Margaret, and Megan is simply a variant of Margaret.
