Utterly stuck if dc1 due in less than 3 weeks is a girl. Finding it hard to strike a balance between something traditional and classic, but not too common, and one that won't date easily. We have as a not so short shortlist

Emily
Harriet
Louisa
Katherine
Josie
Susannah
Rosie
Esme
Freya

Any two of these could be combined, other possible middle names but not first names are

Joy
Elizabeth
Clementine
Emma

Any opinions on what you think the best possible combos are?

Emily- I think this is too little girly, I know many would disagree though
Harriet- In theory I like this name and think Harry is a cool nn for a girl, but I knew a girl with this name who I really didn't like, can't imagine that would bother you though Grin
Louisa- Quite like, under used.
Katherine- This is probably my fave spelling, nice nns too.
Josie- Not a fan.
Susannah- I knew lots growing up so seems dated to me iyswim
Rosie- nn for Rose/Rosa/Rosemary
Esme- Nice
Freya- Nice

Joy
Elizabeth
Clementine
Emma
These are all nice middle name choices, I think my favourite combos are

Louisa Clementine
Katherine Elizabeth

Emily - ok
Harriet - love
Louisa - very nice and shouldn't date.
Katherine - prefer with a C.
Josie - too nn for me, prefer Josephine
Susannah - ok
Rosie - a little girl's name. Can't really imagine it on a teenager or adult.
Esme - will date very quickly
Freya - see Esme.

Harriet Joy or Harriet Elizabeth are probably my favourites.

I love all your names apart from Freya, which is a little too close to Freda for my liking. Josie is ok, but I don't like the nn Jo, so that would put me off.

Louisa, I like with a soft 's' but much less so when pn Loo-ee-za. So I personally wouldn't choose Louisa for that reason.

Emily
Harriet (nn Hatty)
Katherine (nn Kitty or Kate)
Susannah (nn Susie)
Rosie
and
Esme
are all just lovely

Elizabeth is my favourite name in the world, so I would definitely use that as mn.

My favs are
Harriet Elizabeth and Katherine Elizabeth

I know a teenage Rosie. She's a gorgeous young thing and her name really suits her.

I like Emily, Freya, Rosie and Katherine best.

From your middle name list I like them all except maybe Joy.

Love susannah, will use it ever have a girl. We would go fir susannah grace (I know it's not on your list, just think it needs a short middle name, and not so keen on joy).

Also like most of your other choices.

Little I know a teenage Rosie too and gorgeous young thing doesn't really spring to mind Grin. We'll have to agree to disagree on that one.

Emily - Classic, I like it :)

Harriet - Like this one too. It is often shortened to Hattie

Louisa - Not keen

Katherine - Lovely if you don't mind Kate, Katie, Kath or Kat

Josie - I prefer Josephine

Susannah - Again, wary of potential NN material

Rosie - Always loved this. It's popular, but very pretty

Esme - Not keen

Freya - Don't like this at all, sorry.

I like all your middle name choices Grin

Emily, Louisa and Rosie if short for something (Rosanna?) are my favourites. Lovely, classic names.

Like all of them except Esme and Freya - too zeitgeisty for my liking. The others are classics.

Emily - OK but extremely popular, ao that puts me off a bit
Harriet - pretty and like Harry as nn for a girl
Louisa - pretty
Katherine - prefer Kate
Josie - like this
Susannah - not so keen
Rosie - nice
Esme - lovely but I ma biased Wink
Freya - pretty

I really like Freya Elizabeth.

I know 2 Rosies who are both lovely and dated a Harriet in College so a great name but not one I can use Smile

OP your shortlist is very similar to mine when I had DD! She is Harriet Katherine - classic and stong, but nn Hattie somehow suits my mischievous toddler Grin
I also love Josie- but my DH pronounced it Jozie rather than with a soft 's' and this really irritated me!

Report
Hedwig3 · 10/01/2011 10:06

I like Josie and was going to suggest

Josie Clementine

then realised it sounded like

Juicy Clementine Grin

and made myself laugh - oh dear, must get out!
