Isla...by a mile...!

Isla

I'd pronounce the other two 'Aye-la' I think - they're just wrong Grin

I like Isla too but DH wants to spell it the Turkish way ... Ayla. He thinks no one will pronounce it correctly if we spell it Isla. I thought Aila might be a middle ground....? This is the only girl's name we have agreed on and I am 34 + 1 so feeling some pressure to pick something!

I don't quite know what makes "best" in this context.

I'd choose Isla (never having seen either of the others before, they seem "made up" and that's not something I'd go for).

I would pronounce ayla as a-la

Isle is the recognised spelling isn't it? People know how to say it I should think

I'd be worried that Aila would be pronounced "Ay-la" rather than "Eye-la" as my friend Aileen has had that problem lifelong (people keep saying it like "Eileen"!). I think the spelling "Ayla" lends itself even more to the "Ay-la" pronunciation.

Are you in UK? If so, I think you will find Isla is invariably "Eye-la" and well known as such (since Isla StClair was on the telly with Brucie - ).

I'd say Isla.

Ayla and Aila would probably both end up being pronounced ay-la not eye-la.

At least you have the I as a clue in Isla. That, and it's pretty much the standard spelling here.

The other spellings look like different names, and also middle eastern.

Isla. I know someone who named their DD Ayla and hardly anyone pronounces it the same as Isla, she is constantly having to correct people.

Not surprised Eau. Don't know what its like where the OP lives but around here we seem to pronounce I and A quite differently Grin

In Turkey 'ay' is pronounced 'eye' so if you live in Turkey use the Ayla version but in UK use Isla.My dgd [Turkish mum] is Serra which I tend to pronounce as Sarah.

Ayla and Isla are two differnet names..

Ayla is said more like Layla

Isla more like Aie la (I am not great at phoenetics so hope thsi makes sense)

Personally I love Ayla and think Isla is pretty I would likely go w Ayla as Isla is gaining in popularity

In Spanish and German Isla is pronounced EE-sla.

But most languages would pronounce Ayla/Aila to rhyme with High-La.

Someone called Moira should surely know that 'Isla' is a scottish island, how can there be a Turkish spelling? ConfusedGrin

I know an Isla and a turkish Ayla, both have people mispronounce their names all the time!

Personally, I wouldn't have pronounced Ayla's name correctly when I first met her if I'd seen it written before hearing it. I don't think I'd use that unless family had Turkish links (is your dh turkish - if so I think that makes sense).

Beautiful name though, whichever spelling.

Yes - I know Isla is a Scottish island! The Ayla (Turkish) name is different and has a different meaning but IS promounced the same. Unfortunately DH is being stubborn about this, despite the fact that Isla is a fairly well known name. He is certain that people will pronounce it IZ-LA!

Thanks for your help! You have just confirmed for me that people will definitely mispronounce Ayla!

Isla, definitely.

I am pretty sure that most people know how to pronounce it. I am not keen on phonetic spelling for names like this.
