What do you think? Is it a bit drippy?

I like it.

The HP association (" moaning") isn't great, though.

Igglybuff · 14/11/2010 07:51

No sorry. Harry Potter association is too much.

...the turtle.

sorry.

Lovely! I have never read or watched HP so I don't know how srong that association is. It does rhyme with turtle though, but then most names rhyme with something.
It is such a lovely name though.

No, this awful boy at school used to call me Myrtle the cow, after the cow in 'Henry's cat'

Report
fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 14/11/2010 07:59

And no, I am not called Myrtle, was clearly just a cow

No, you are just trying to be 'cool'. Sorry, its shit.

Rhubarbgarden · 14/11/2010 08:20

I didn't know there was a Harry Potter connection. That's that one out then.

How is Myrtle trying to be cool??

Congratulations, you've found a name that is worse than my previous worst name. Myrtle is hideous, the sound, the spelling, nothing nice about it at all.

Again .... The turtle, sorry! Shame as I think it's lovely in itself

Report
Niecie · 14/11/2010 09:22

I must admit I took one look at the title before clicking on thread and thought 'turtle'

No idea why several of us thought that (as someone said, all names have rhymes) so I googled it. Apparently it is a children's poem which might explain it. That, and it has been used for every turtle that has even be rescued from a beach somewhere.

It is a bit drippy (or is that the turtle connotations again) and also seems suited to an old person but that is probably just me.

It is at least unusual but not desperately so.

Niecie · 14/11/2010 09:23

Oh and I have read all the HP's and didn't think of poor old Myrtle at all.

Report
earlgreyismynectar · 14/11/2010 09:48

As children one of our friends mum's was called Myrtle and we'd all chant Myrtle the turtle amid much sniggering! As Niecie said I too am surprised by how universal this association is, I thought it was just us!

Good old ladyish names - Beatrice, Clara, Hattie, Maisie, Elsie, Rose, Lilian

Old lady names that cannot be saved - Myrtle, Mavis, Enid, Mildred, Hilda

Just my opinion obviously.

Funny - I actually thought turtle too; and like everyone else thought it was just me. Clearly not!

I'm afraid I also thought turtle.

What about Meryl?

Has same type of spelling and sound, but to me at least, is infinitely nicer, actually a lovely name... I know a gorgeous adult Meryl, and of course there's Meryl Streep..

I d just think of Moaning Myrtle haunting the girls toilets in Harry potter.[sorry]

Tidey - I love all the names on your 'cannot be saved list' - 3 of them are on our long list for dc5!

I hate this name, it is horrible, everyting about it is wrong. I love lots of old lady names so its nothing to do with that, its just wrong.

What about: Ada
Elsie
Blythe
Beatrix
Florence
Cecily
Pearl
Dulcie
Violet
Thora

I'm with Tidey - Myrtle's a great name - if you're giving birth to a 76 year old. She was also Tom Buchanan's mistress in The Great Gatsby and a bit of a bitch.

it was my gran's name although she went by mabel as a nickname with lots of people. she would be about 95 now if still alive. i think it will come into resurgence again soon, but it's not to my taste for a baby tbh. definitely put it in the same bracket as florence, which is very popular now.

Don't like it.

What about Myrid or Mirrin, both similar, but cuter.

I actually love Myrtle, and had secretly chosen it for any future DD. I told DH recently though, and he hated it! I say go for it, I had never heard or thought of Turtle, and despite having read all the HPs I have never made that connection. I think it is a beautiful name, and shall spend a lot of time trying to talk DH round to realising this too.
