I always think Jessica is a name like Alice, but it doesn't sound anything like it.

So I'm probably no help hmm

Um, how like Alice do you want it to sound - like Janice? Or like similar letter at the beginning and similar number of sylabbles like Anna?

abr1de Fri 22-Oct-10 15:13:12

Alyssa
Elyssa

smother Fri 22-Oct-10 15:14:15

thanks v much Poppyknot - like Elsie a lot.

The name doesn't have to sound the same as Alice but more have the same feeling and be the same sort of name, if you know what I mean.

What sort of image/associations does the name Alice conjure up?

smother Fri 22-Oct-10 15:15:21

helloooo I really love Jess too.

minipie Fri 22-Oct-10 15:18:36

I think of Alice as a simple non frilly very English name. Slightly medieval/olde English perhaps. So how about these with a similar "feel":

Cecily
Clare
Eleanor
Marian

I like some of these suggestions... but none as much as Alice sad.... hopefully the right name will come along soon!

Sunlightdances Fri 22-Oct-10 15:44:12

Sarah
Laura
Rebecca
Rachel

I think of these as simple classic names.

Leah?

Eleanor?
Celia?
Laura?

Simple but classic.

smother Fri 22-Oct-10 15:53:18

I agree, Alice is simple and classic. But I also think of it as prettier than some of the other names suggested here which sound a bit more 'solid' (not in a bad way).

It's hard to describe, but I like the prettiness and simplicity of Alice (it kind of sparkles to me when I say it) and I can't think of another name like it! .... I'm probably not making much sense but it's hard to describe as I say.

Please keep the suggestions coming, it is helping!

EssieW Fri 22-Oct-10 15:54:03

I have an Alice.

Other names we considered were Ellen, Eleanor, Lucy and Rebecca

EssieW Fri 22-Oct-10 15:55:29

And we would have considered Laura but friends already have one.

Also like Katherine which I think is similar feel to Alice.

Anna also lovely

crumpetsolo Fri 22-Oct-10 15:58:23

I loved the name Alice but it is spoiled by that parody of the song 'Livin' next door to Alice' Now everytime there is an Alice around you can garentee that some middle aged oaf will shout 'Alice?... Who the f..k is Alice!'

Totally rubbished the name.

tummytickler Fri 22-Oct-10 16:43:50

Iris?

Spookberries Fri 22-Oct-10 16:46:02

upahill My DP spouts that naff thing every time I bring up the name Alice. sad

BelligerentGhoul Fri 22-Oct-10 16:48:06

Clover
Naomi
Lydia
Elinor
Cecily
Beatrice

RockBat Fri 22-Oct-10 16:49:04

What is your surname, Alice? If you like the name so much are you sure you're not writing it off for a non reason? I'm trying to think of a surname which would rule it out... Ellis? Alice Ellis is ok...Wallis? Alice Wallis? Again, not a deal breaker. Inwonderland? That could be a problem, I grant you wink

GreenStinkingStumpSleeves Fri 22-Oct-10 16:51:16

Carys
Alexa
Sophie
Polly
Susannah
Paris
Lucy

all seem to have something tenuous in common with Alice to me

what level of similarity were you hoping for though?

Kate or Anna

GrumpyFish Fri 22-Oct-10 16:58:30

Top of our list this time are Alice and Katherine (Kate).

It's got to be Cooper. Can't think of any other surname that would have an issue with Alice.

RockBat Fri 22-Oct-10 17:01:13

Cooper, of course! He's cool though, not a bad thing...yeah, would raise a few eyebrows I guess

or InChains

BridesheadRegardless Fri 22-Oct-10 18:20:44

Lucy

or

Kate.

they are both simple yet pretty and have a slightly old fashioned feel.

cyanarasamba Fri 22-Oct-10 18:46:38

Alice was on my shortlist but DH won't hear of it. These names have the same sort of pretty "feel" to me:

Cora
Constance (Connie)
Orla
Rose
Emily

Also like Esther (Tess) or Estelle (Stella).

PaulineMole Fri 22-Oct-10 18:47:55

I was thinking of Alice for DD2 (due in 2 days) but am now waving towards Lydia, Florence, Beatrice or Frances.

BelligerentGhoul Fri 22-Oct-10 18:50:12

Esther/Hester is lovely.

BarnMummy Fri 22-Oct-10 18:53:18

Emilia - I have 2 boys so never got to use it, but I think it's very pretty.

eatyourveg Fri 22-Oct-10 19:10:03

Grace or Esme

My DD1 is Katherine Alice (Short surname)
DD2 is Victoria Jane.

DD2 was going to be Jessica but it just didn't suit when she was born.

LadyCressida Fri 22-Oct-10 21:26:42

I used Alice for DD even though it sounds bad with our surname (I figure she won't have it forever!)

Other names in a similar vein...

Margot/Margaret/Marguarite
Emma
Philippa
Katherine
Adelaide (that comes from the same stem as Alice and is still very pretty)

smother Sat 23-Oct-10 11:19:58

thanks for the suggestions- some beautiful names. None I love quite as much as Alice but getting there....

no, my surname isn't cooper or inwonderland etc!

it's just a name that would go pretty badly with the initial A. before it..... would make an otherwise normal surname a source of potential teasing. Honestly, I'd use Alice if I could!

SpiderWilliam Sat 23-Oct-10 12:06:15

If it's an issue with the initial could you call her Something Alice Surname, and call her Alice? I know a couple of people whose parents swapped the two first names around to avoid unfortunate acronyms, but used the middle name day to day.

GreenStinkingStumpSleeves Sat 23-Oct-10 12:07:24

What about Phyllis?

I said "Phallus", Greeny, don't think it's a goer, somehow.

GreenStinkingStumpSleeves Sat 23-Oct-10 12:12:04

lol yes, but I don't much like Alice either, on account of it containing the word "lice"

am trying to empaffize, innit grin

Felice?
Or Millicent?

RockBat Sat 23-Oct-10 16:16:35

Is you surname Rse? Or Psehit?

OK, I give up, I guess you're sure you can't use it. Just seems a shame. What about a silent H? Halice?

Katharine
Emily
Rebekah
Elinor
Matilda (thinking medieval here)
Joan/Jane?
Laura/Laurel
Mary/Marie/Maria
Una

I see Frances suggested - love Frances, so pretty, classic and uncomplicated!

We have an Alice.

I am Katherine Never really thought about our names going together but maybe they do.

I like Josephine. Just asked DH again and he said he still hates it.

DD's middle name is Charlotte which I think has quite a similar feel.

I am an Alice Cooper!

Although I was not born Cooper and I didn't change my name until I had been married for 8 years (and was 8 months pg). You know what? Nobody cares. One or two comments, but no one under 25 really knows who Alice Cooper the singer is.

HollyGoHeavily Mon 25-Oct-10 14:10:24

DD1 is called Charlotte and Alice is on our short-list for DD2 along with

Lauren
Esme
Bronwen
Meredith
Caitlin

We have had the same short-list now for months and can't choose because we love them all - I am hoping inspiration strikes in the delivery room

I went to school with A.Pratt <snigger> I'm guessing yours is similar?

Friend with Alice also has a Lucie, which I think is a lovely name. Otherwise Jessica or Ella get my vote

benheldy Thu 24-Jan-13 21:19:57

What the shite is DD DH DS etc?
And dont say "Darling Husband" because that is bent as fuck.

gallicgirl Thu 24-Jan-13 21:25:58

Could you not change the A to an E? Elise? Elice? Ellis?

millymae Fri 25-Jan-13 19:02:15

Bearcrumble Fri 25-Jan-13 19:08:17

Also think of the names mentioned Hester has a similar feel.

RobinSparkles Fri 25-Jan-13 21:27:13

Caitycat Fri 25-Jan-13 21:28:39
