Baby names

Will, Tom, Nat .... Surname 'Long'

Vickles · 07/10/2010 21:03

Baby no 3 due soon. A boy!
We have 2 girls:- Beth (Bethan), Daisy..... and????

I love the idea of a one syllable name... nice and strong!

Will Long (Long Willy at school????)
Tom Long (is it too common?)
Nat Long (from Nathan...Nate or Nat)

any other suggestions?

Hmm... not sure a one syllable name really works with your surname tbh

I think there are plenty of strong 2 syllable names

I like the name William with nn Will
I like Thomas with nn Tom
Not so keen on Nat or its longer version.

I don't really like nn or shortened names as the full name personally.

I like each of your suggestions - but think that your surname needs two syllables (sorry). However your girls names really do. (Daisy - two syllables Beth - longer sounds)

If you insist though, what about Zak, Dan, Seb?

The name George sprung to mind when i saw your girl's names.
George Long has a ring to it.

Tom Long is the name of Tom in Tom's Midnight Garden. Was reading it to the DCs tonight. I love Will, Nat and Tom. One of those is my DS's name.

You cannot do Will Long - firstly because the Ls run into each other and secondly because he WILL be called long Willy.

Tom Long doesn't sound great imo because of the two Os.

Nat Long is ok.

Are you serious or joking, metromum:

Will Long
Tom Long

Agree that Will and Tom don't sound great with your surname (Long), especially when said quickly. Also wouldn't risk the Willy teasing potential.

How about Quinn Long, Max Long or James Long if you're after a one syllable first name.

(We also have a short one syllable surname but went for 2 syllable names for the kids, neither of which have yet been shortened).

My nephew has the name William with the same last name as OP. As far as im aware he hasnt had the "long willy" comments so far. Is it such a bad thing though. Maybe if the surname was Short! Wink

I wouldn't have a first name beginning with A or P if your surname is Long, as appearing in a list of names as ALong or PLong both sound a bit strange to my ear...Smile

thanks everyone.... really good suggestions.
i do agree with the 1 syllable name with a 1 syllable last name.... it is a tough one.... god, i'm really struggling with boys names.
the girls names were so much easier! lol!

a friend did mention 'long willy' to me - and my first thought was well, that's not too bad - better than short willy!

hmmmmm.... will go away and have a good think...
thanks again mumsnet!
