We need some help! Confused We are torn between two different names for our soon to be born baby girl. It's down to either Imogen or Charis (pronounced "Karis"). Could you please tell me which one you prefer and why. Also, whether you think people would constantly mispronounce Charis and say "Charis" with a ch sound. We don't like the spelling Carys or Karis. Thanks! Smile

Hi!
My middle name is Charis - sadly my mum read it in a book and everyone mispronounces it as Karis - :o LOL
I think the norm would be to say it with the hard Ch/K sound - it's Scots name isn't it?
I love the name, but we do say SSSharis Hmm

Everyone would mispronounce Charis.

I do prefer it as a name though.

I love Karis, but think you might have problems with people mis pronouncing it...

I love Imogen, but I have an Imogen, so am biased.

I would say they are quite different types of name.

Imogen: classic, Shakespearean, my reservation would be that I know 3 Imogens under 2 so think it is in danger of getting v popular.

Charis: for me a bit celebrity inspired (sorry), but I suspect I am only getting that idea because of Cerys Matthews.

On balance I prefer Charis, but would only use it myself if I had some Welsh connections.

Not sure if you would run into pronunciation issues, but certainly spelling issues which could be just as irritating for your DD.

Charis is welsh. I like the sound of it. Prefer it to Imogen.

Cerys matthews is hardly stuff of celebrity.

I would go with Imogen.

Charis will be pronounced incorrectly by so many people. Having read the OP, I had to scroll back up, thinking is it shariss or charis (as in choo choo) and then seeing actually it's Karis - I had forgotten in a few seconds Grin.

I like Carys but hate the spelling you like (sorry). I like Imogen too but it often gets shortened to Immy or Imo.

Charis is a Greek name (meaning Grace). Spelt Carys is Welsh. Neither of us our Welsh, we just like the name! Our other daughter has a Latin sounding name, yet my husband is English and I am Australian!! So we aren't too bothered about where the names come from, we choose them based on whether we like the way they sound. Some good points raised so far though....thanks guys, keep them coming!!!

My daughter is Charis, I think it's the Greek spelling. I love the name but it probably would have made life easier to spell it Carys although obviously most of the time you are talking to people who already know your name so mispronounciation isn't a daily problem.

Imogen. Classy name.

I think Charis is medieval, and it is a hard 'k' sound. I went to uni with a Charis who pronounced it with a soft 'Ch' at the start. She was arty (design degree) and had dreadlocks, it suited her. Both names are quite strong.

Imogen.

I have an Imogen nn Ims (Dh is australian and the name doesn't seem to be so popular in Oz). But I do agree that it is becoming more and more popular in the UK. DD is at preschool with another.

Charis is also a nice name.

don't really like Imogen

like carys but think charis would have anightmare of having to conctantly tell people how to spell/pronounce her name?

My DD3s middle name is Charis.

I think it's beautiful.

But I love Imogen too.

Charis, hands down.

I dislike Imogen -- reminds me of pigeons, has a clunky sound, and conjures up an image of someone rather prim.

Yes, there will be some who mispronounce Charis, but I think the name and what it means make it worth it. I think it's elegant.

Imogen

as I would say Charis with a CH sound, also think Imogen is a nicer name.

I love the name Imogen, it was the name of one of our twin girls.

I also like Charis, but prefer the 'Cerys' version of it.

I love the name Charis.

It is one of my favourite names, if it went with our surname I would use it.
