Sapphira

Hi
I'm not pregnant but a cousin is and currently looking into names. She thought of sapphire for a girl at first Hmm as she likes jewel type names.

But then Sapphira (said saffeera) suddenly came into her head and now she loves it. Her hubby is coming round to the idea and likes Sapphy as a nn.

I think it's cute and unusal, never heard of it before but not sure about when she's ( if baby is a she) older.

What do u think?

I like it :) Actually I also like Sapphire! Wouldn't Sapphira be mistaken for Sophia (which I like even more?)

It is very close to the a name of car, Vauxhall Zafira (actually I thought it was Saphira but upon googling its a Z not an S), dont know if that's a consideration for her but thought I'd just make the comment.

If she likes 'jewel' names what about Jade or
Amber :)

I like it, I almost named DD Sapphire, but then someone said it "sounds like a pornstar" and that put me off.

Its a biblical name btw incase that gives any bearing on the decision

In case you're wondering about similar names in books etc, there's a dragon called Saphira in the Eragon books. Quite popular kids books.

Thanks ladies x

I'd no idea about the biblical or book reference but will tell her when we next speak though I wouldn't think it will matter to her/them.
Oh I forgot, my auntie and uncle(her parents obv) said isn't that the car? Grin I guess if it's said correctly she won't have that problem

It's the name of a car.

Well, I know one Sapphira; it tends to sound very like Sophia when spoken by her peers.

For me it suggests sapphic ie lesbian erotisism. A bit tricky if she turns out to be hetrosexual, a bit obvious if she doesn't. I bet there are lesbian characters in books/fims called Sapphira.

Lesbian connotations for me too. :)

I immediately thought of Vauxhall Zafira.

I dont mind it but not keen on that spelling. It would look better as Safira or something, although I may be making that up! :o

It has a lovely sound, saffy as a nn would be cute.
Although the biblical story would make me think twice as Sapphira meets an untimely end, but if not religious perhaps a non issue for your relative.

Safira isn't made-up. I think I prefer this spelling (as I prefer 'Sofia'). Saphira is another acceptable variation.

I wanted this when a teenager, but my mum said it reminded her of Zovirax, which put me off it.

lol at Zovirax

There is a Polish name Zaphia which is similar.

Also Seraphina and Sophronia are names which are similar, and which I much prefer for some reason to Sapphira.

I really like Seraphina, would never use it thouigh as dd is called Sophia (which is also a gerat name, obv).

It reminds me of Zafira, that car ad with two of the ugliest children, where did they find them! I know it's Saphira, but stil....

I know of two Saphiyas. slightly less like the car. But a bit too much like saphic perhaps.

Mind you, re the CAR thing, I love the name Clio, so if you love the name, don't let a car put you off. The car will be discontinued in five years.

Thanks for your opinions and suggestions ladies. I will pass them on to her tomorrow or show her this thread.
Maybe she can get other name ideas for her baby as well from other posts.

Xx
