Will my daughter hate me for giving her the nickname Floss?

I have been stuck on Florence for ages.

Then Sam Cam had the same idea and I wavered a bit yesterday (there is a thread )and I was put straight by you lovely MN'ers.

So my only other concern is that I would love to use the nn Floss/Flossie but as she grows will my daughter resent me for naming her Floss/Flossie?

Everyone in RL gives me this look when I tell them and someo have openly laughed, apart from dh, but even he says he will probably call her florrie and not Floss.

Is Floss cruel, or are the people I know in RL just daft?

It's just a nickname, it's not like you're putting Flossie on her birth certificate, so I don't think it's a problem. I think Floss/Flossie is an adorable nickname, and if she doesn't agree she can just use Florence, Flo, Florrie etc. with other people. But if you call her it from birth it will just be what she's used to and will seem completely normal

My DD is Florence Rose. Was gutted about Callmedave!
I'm sticking with calling her Florence. Others call her Flo, FloRo and Flossie. I think it's entirely up to her when she's older to decide which (if any) nickname she uses. Call her Floss by any means, when she's old enough to object she'll let you know.

Florence is a lovely name without the use
of a nn but I would say nn's really don't matter that much. My brother has got a nn which he really likes to be called but I would say 70% of the time he is called by is real name. If you like Flossie go for it. I prefer it to Flo or Florrie and if your daughter doesn't like it she will just let the nn fizzle out in my opinion .

I can see a generation of fertility board users sniggering in 30 odd years time when your little Florence becomes an aunt and gets called Aunty Flo.

Florence is a lovely name. I have a name that is usually shortened but I firmly resisted and am known by the full version. Whatever nickname you use for your child it is unlikely that their schoolmates will use it.

As long as your sirname isn't Moss or Mossy she'll be fine.

People will give her all sorts of nicknames through her life. If she doesn't like then, she'll tell 'em!

DD3 is currently shortening DD1's name (DD3 is 2yo, so isn't doing it deliberately). DD2 and DH started to pick up on this, and call DD1 by the shortened version too. DD1 has told them she doesn't mind it from DD3, but she doesn't like anyone else using the NN. She is now, with my permission (), ignoring her father and younger sister if they use the NN she has already asked them not to use.

BTW, I quite like Flossie.

I have sooo wanted to give my hypothetical girl the name florence - it was my grandmothers name and I love it. DP hates it though and will be even more put off now :(

Flossie is nice, and so is florrie but to be honest she'll probably make up her own nickname when she's old enough so don't worry!

I know a Floss (she is a Flora) and she loves it, it's really cute.

I have a nn that is really random and nothing to do with my name, I don't think you have much control over these things, her nn will probably develop as opposed to being decided.

Agree with SPH, nicknames tend to develop naturally - my Dad used to call me Floss when I was little but it's a bit random, nothing like my actual name. I didn't find it embarassing but it did fall away spontaneously as I got older.

My niece gets called florrie, which I think is lovely, much nicer than floss or flo.

I wanted Florence for soon-to-be dd2, but Dh doesn't like Flo (which he thinks is inevitable), and even my dad (whose mum was Florence), laughed when I suggested Flossie. Sounds like a sheep dog, apparently.

I love it though, but agree that nn do tend to be a bit 'organic' and you might end up with something totally unrelated to her name. DD1 is currently 'Hedgehog'!
