Honest opinions on this name for a girl please. I love it, but feel it does sound a bit 'harsh' for a baby, much better for an older child/woman. Or are my hormones getting the better of me??!!

I dislike it, sorry. I think it sounds harsh, and don't like the way it ends in "rid".

However, it seems to be getting more popular and I'm sure many people will reply to say they like it.

Yes, my mum was like 'no you cannot use that!' I think I just love the meaning more!

I love it. I don't think of it as harsh, just Scandinavian -- no more harsh than Greta. I know a little Belgian Astrid aged probably 4, and it's gorgeous for her. I also know a little Ingrid. The beauty of those names is that they do last a lifetime.

Absolutely love it! Would use for our dd but our last name starts with ST, and ASTrid STxxx doesn't sound right to me. We are now considering Ingrid as a middle name, but I actually prefer Astrid - so elegant and feminine in my view.

There are many less harsh Scandinavian names, though, aren't there?

I like it, but it does sound a bit harsh. Thing is, you're bound to shorten it or use a nn while she's little and then she can grow into her name. I say go for it if you like it!

I love it, but know what you mean about it being a bit hard for baby. You may end up calling her Asti or something to soften it which may well stick for life!

I don't really like it, it's kind of cool I guess but a bit harsh. Also reminds me of Astrid in 'The Accidental' by Ali Smith

Oh, lots more replies, thanks Smile My dh loves it too, it was my mother and sister that hated it! But as I love it so much thought I would check with the mn jury first, before cancelling it out.

I always loved this name for a baby girl, although heartbreakingly, DP has vetoed it along with my other favourite, Elettra. Grrr, what does he know Sad

But go for it mamasunshine, it sounds like a fabulous foreign film actress name!

I like it - I actually quite like 'harsh' names (ie ones that don;t end in -ie or -a)

I know someone with a teenage Astrid. She is a very cool sporty girl. IKWYM about it not being the sweetest of baby names but it is one hell of a name to grow into!
