I got all these image results

www.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&q=thalia+grace&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=nAZUTJKqDIyM0gSn2qmDAw&sa= X&oi=imageresultgroup&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CCwQsAQwAA&biw=1345&bih=572

Suggesting some fictional character with a cult following (although I'm still non-plus about it)

Would an association like this put you off?

Oh god no, this will be long forgotten by Christmas, the characters change so often.
Lovely choice.

Who on earth is that?

It looks like one of those Japanese cartoon characters.

Also interested in how you pronounce thalia

Am thinking of calling daughter talia - pronounced tah-lia

Thalia Grace is a character in the Percy Jackson books. There's a film out and will probably be more.

But I doubt anyone will know the character in ten years time so go for it if you like it.

I think it's lovely and to answer the pronunciation question Im guessing it's the same as you say splashy as I used to teach a lovely girl with it spelt Thalia pronounced tah-lia. Hth

Thalia is a Greek word - she was the Muse of Comedy.

ANd the name is pronounces Tha-lia - to rhyme with failure. Honestly. I an right about this. The Greek letter the name starts with is Theta, which has a th - sound.

Wouldnt bother me at all and yes Shew as as seeker says the Muse of Comedy and it is a beautiful name

jabberwocky · 01/08/2010 15:12

I've never heard it with an r sound like in failure??? But I'm in the US so maybe that's a Brit thing.

Have always heard it with the TH pronounced as such.

seeker · 01/08/2010 15:24

Sorry - a Brit type Failya is what I meant.

Thalia in the Percy Jackson novels is a pretty cool character - heroic and punky with no real negative associations. She's not habitually referred to as "Thalia Grace", just Thalia (I know the books pretty well, and didn't remember her surname), and your DD would normally be referred to just by her first name, so the connection wouldn't be very explicit.

I'd go for it.

Thanks DilysPrice for filling me in that helps

I am Greek and would never pronounce the Anglicised saying of this name with an r sound.

It's Th as in Theta, but then a as in Cat

So Tha-lee-a

Report
seeker · 02/08/2010 22:18

That's the pronounciation I was trying (incompetently) to convey. Thay-lee-a. I think the r sound came in when it was suggested it rhymes with failure - which it does , if you speak in a moderately posh, South of England accent!

i knew what you meant seeker

i think it is lovely a name and the connection with the book wouldn't put me off as dilys says, she has no negative associations.

still definitely a hard -a sound not -ay
sorry to be pedantic

That's how I have heard it. There is a reporter named Thalia but can't remember her last name. She pronounces the a sound as a short vowel iirc and with the emphasis on the first syllable.

Thalia is an amazing character from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Thalia is punky and confident and as a daughter of Zeus she is a natural leader, much like her younger brother Jason, who even though they squabble sometimes, she loves him a lot.

She loves to joke around though if you get her angry, run. Thalia is snarky and always has a come back. No one dares mess with her.

Thalia is also quite a generous and almost loving character in certain situations. She is very protective over her friends who she thinks are more like family, she practically adopted Annabeth (who was seven at the time) when she was twelve.

Personally I would 100% go for it, but that's pretty much only because I really love the books (the movies are a disgrace!). It's completely up to you though.

Wonder if she did choose the name 10 years ago Wink that said I came on to say the character was amazing.

Beautiful names imo and no I wouldn't let that association put you off. I had a friend called Thalia at school pronounced the same as toomuch . She was of Greek heritage also. I've always loved that name.
