Baby names

Esther Isabella

I am expecting my second child towards the end of August and although we have sorted out a list of names, I am still feeling a little confused!!! We have a three year old son already called Ben and have been told that we are expecting a baby girl this time. I was just wondering if you could give me some constructive feedback to these girls names. Both me and my husband really like some of the more old fashioned names and have listed them in order of our favourites so far. Our favourite being Esther Isabella or Esther Rose followed by:

Daisy Isabella
Beatrix/Beatrice Rose
Scarlett Mary
Esme Grace
Sophia Rose

What do you think? Is Esther too old fashioned?

It's lovely but I like Hester Isabella even more!

I would say esther is by far the nicest and most unusal name on your list. go for it! either with Isabella or Rose as a middlename, both beautiful.

Hester, obviously

I REALLY like Esther. The others are all nice enough, but not special.

I think Rose is fantastically over-used at the moment, but I must say it goes beautifully with Esther. Partly because they are both Jewish origin so they fit together better than Esther with Isabella, and partly because Esther is a slightly spiky name and Rose very soft, so they work well in tandem.

Thanks for your feedback. It has really helped me to follow my heart and go with Esther. I had a few negative comments about the name and it made me start to feel a little unsure. We were also considering giving her the nn Ettie or Etta for short. what do you think?

I like Esther Isabella best from your list, but think that Esther Isabel sounds better with one less syllable. Depends on your surname though to see what sounds best overall.

Not keen on Ettie and Etta as nn's. I think Esther is lovely as it is, and is only 2 syllables so doesn't really need to be shortened.

I know the second part of this is not on your list, but I think Esther Naomi flows very well.

I love Isabella but I don't think it fits well with Esther because it doesn't 'flow', iyswim. I think it's the eh-ih.

I do agree with you that both Isabel and Naomi do flow better than Isabella which has the 4 syllables. Our surname is a short 1 syllable name, so we thought we may get away with a longer middle name.

Im glad you like Esther has it is SpiderWilliam, the nn's
were something that we thought we would consider as a bit of fun whilst she is little!

I love Esther, but prefer Rose for the middle name :D

What about Estella Naomi

Estella is softer than Esther and less popular than Isabella. I really like Beatrix as well.

Estella is great too but work with a woman called Estelle which has took the shine of the name for me a little - lovely name though and would still consider it. thanks for the suggestion V.S.

I forgot to mention in my earlier post that our surname is Vines. Do you think this would still work well with Rose as a middle name or do you think it sounds too 'garden like?'

I don't mind Esther. In terms of the rest of your list:

Daisy Isabella - don't like Daisy at all - too girly
Beatrix/Beatrice Rose - love Beatrix and Beatirce
Scarlett Mary - dislike immensely
Esme Grace - like
Sophia Rose - like a lot

daisy isabella is too much zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz sounds awful.

I don't find Esther old-fashioned but don't really like it all that much. Just not really my taste but there is nothing wrong with it. I am not sure that Esther Isabella rolls off the tongue that well (if it really matters with a middle name)

How is Rose of Jewish origin Hester? Thought it was just the flower.

I think if Rose is a middle name, people would not often hear it in connection with your surname. They'd hear Esther Vines which sounds quite nice. When would you use Esther Rose Vines (except for formal applications, passports etc)?

Daisy and Isabella were both at the top of our list initially but we thought Isabella had become too popular and was concerned that Daisy would not age well into adulthood, even though I really do love both names Polly1987.

Im glad that you dont think that Rose would be a problem with our surname ZZZenAgain.

I put Mary into the middle name list because it was my grandma's middle name who lived with me before she passed away. I thought it would be nice to use it but i still feel that Isabel/lla or Rose suits the name better. I am open to any other suggestions though

What about Isolde as a twist on the Isabella theme? You would still get the Izzy nn but slightly different. From Tristan and Isolde.

Ismene is nice too.

Izzmaynay I think.
