Knitters - Picking up along cast off edge?

Can anyone direct me to some straightforward instructions? I've been unhappy with my busking this technique for ages and I'm thinking about doing a log cabin blanket so need to get it spot on.

Thanks

have a look at www.knittinghelp.com - it's got some very good videos.

I think whatever it uses in terms of plug-ins is on a lot of hit-lists then ceolas because our security settings are blocking it too. Site opens fine (and looks great warty) but I can't play videos either

oh bugger... I did a trial earlier and it looks messy.

I do think you have to do a few rows for it to bed down. My pick-ups for the neck of the slipover I did for scummy's boy looked dire initially, but by the time I'd done four the whole piece had relaxed and looked fine
If that helps? I would class myself as a Highly Anxious Picker-Up, every time, I must say.

I'm never sure which bit to pick up. And getting the same bit each time so you don't have funny big loops is hard!

I get best results from picking up not from the edge stitch but from the penultimate stitch in the row.

that's a bummer - another reason not to use microsoft

i also pick up the penultimate stitch as it is more likely to not create holes.

how are you doing it at the moment?

i wonder if there's another site out there. i found trying to work out knitting from books is like trying to assemble flat pack furniture. here it is all in pieces.... and here it is all together!!! now YOU do it.

How are you getting on with this? I have the Montse instructions for picking up, which are more detailed.

Also, actually, I would tend to not cast off the stitches in the first place, iyswim. Do a provisional cast off (bind off?) and then get them later.

oh i HATE picking up, i hate it SO MUCH, it always always seems so amateurish, like there must be a proper system, surely.

i feel better now i have found its 3 stitches for every 4 rows. or the other way round. makes sense when i do it
