I am sure it has been asked before, but has anyone got the recipe for playdough? I havn't got any scales so cup and spoon measurements would be best, thanks.

1 Cup Plain flour
1 Cup water (warmish)
1/3 cup salt
1 table spoon Cooking Oil
1 tea spoon Cream of tartar
Food colouring

Sieve the flour, salt into a bowl then add the cream of tartar. Add the water, oil and food colouring. Place the bowl to cook in the microwave on high for 2 minutes. Give a good stir, then put in for another 2 mins. Take out of the bowl and knead altogether into a ball. Allow to cool (be careful this may be very hot). Turn out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide into pieces for the children to play with.

i was just googling and found this 5 mins before you posted! haven't tried though

1 cup of plain flour
1 cup water
colouring, food or poster paing
4 teaspoons of cream of tartar
half a cup of salt

mix it all together in a small pan, mix with a wooden spoon over a low heat until it forms a dough and goes darker.
Turn it out on to a board and knead it until it gets to the right texture

Throw it at the kids, spark up a fag and get on MN for 20 minutes un interrupted

I'd recommend mixing the food colouring with the water.

Ooooh - add a table spoon of cocoa and omit the food colouring. It smells gorgeous. But is sadly inedible. Or use flavourings from the baking bit of the supermarket for banana or strawberry scented playdough.

Stoopid question I know - but what age can they start playing with it?

Any age, although they do try to eat it. DD is 12 months and she still puts it in her mouth although the homemade stuff is better than bought in this respect as you know what'sin it despite its high salt content.

ah but what if they try and neck it and end up blue in the face, or try and feed it to you while you are napping because it smells so nice? Hmmmm? What if that happens? Make it smell of Vim instead

Forgot to ask, how long does it last and how do I store it?

Ah, but it tastes hideously salty, Suzy. Although that doesn't seem to deter BabyDragon. She takes a mouthful, screws up her face, spits it out, takes a mouthful...

My dds had a great time with homemade playdough when they were smaller.
Btw hello chestnutter I've never come across you before!
Think there is also a chestnut as I wasn't allowed that name but I've never come across that mnetter either.
