Which sewing machine?

Know this has been done in the past, but would like an up-to-date recommendation if anyone has one.

Have an ancient machine with different stitches, different stitch lengths and reverse but constantly jams up on me, has a poor light on it and is generally not nice to use. Once I got past curtains and blinds in the last couple of places and a bedspread I have only really made costumes for the dc on it. (Which pass muster but look quite poor on close-up inspection!)

Have a sewing class in a couple of weeks where you take your machine and they teach you how to use it properly. Would love an upgrade to take with me.

Following the class I'm hoping to make some nice (and properly finished) clothes, alter some existing clothes, make slip-covers for a couple of chairs and make some blinds and curtains for our latest place. Long-term would love to make a quilt as always find myself drooling over fat quarters, offcuts etc.... at craft fairs but that's a bit complicated for now.

I bought the singer in Lidl a few weeks ago it was £119 and it's fab. Not sure what it's current list price is though.
We use janome machines in my class and they are great machines and have several different models depending on your requirements, features and price.
