Have come over all crafty and want to fill the house with decorations made by the kids, so thought I would start a thread to get some ideas. So far I have planned:

  • pom pom snowballs for the tree
  • twigs sprayed silver with home made baubles on
  • the usual paper snowflakes
  • glittery decorations using star or tree template

Any other ideas before I take my trip to Hobbycraft?

i'm going to give the salt dough a try. how much salt/flour/water is best? do you have to bake it or can it be left to dry by itself? lastly, do you need special paint?

Some more ideas to add to the collection:

a little angel and santa using an empty toilet roll for the body. Then stick on paper/string legs/arms and a little cardboard face.

Sew miniature santa sacks to hang on the tree- decorate them with glitter pens with children's names etc

Can anyone suggest something Festive to do with those foil tins that shop-bought mince pies come in? DH has been buying mince pies for about a month, and we have hundreds (well at least thirty!)

Make a Father Christmas that moves.

Do a template of Santa separate arms, head, legs and body.
Get the children to paint them, cut him out and then attach the head to the body with one of those split pins,do the same with the arms and legs.
What about making your own crackers for christmas day you can buy the toys hats and bangers to put in them.

What about a handprint wreath? We're drawing around our hands, cutting them out and putting them all in a circle for a wreath.

We're also making Rudolf pictures using milk container tops.

I am definitely doing salt dough decorations too, they're wicked!

I love salt dough things, roll out the dough, leave it quite thick and use small biscuit cutters for stars and animal shapes, ginger bread men christmas tree. ooo theres loads of things you can do with salt dough. The cheapest I've seen flour I think it was Aldi for about 18p for a big bag. I think it's plain flour you need but I can't remember the recipe.

Found this on google
Salt Dough?fun for all ages!
Note: there are many variations on this simple recipe. Our advice is to experiment until you get exactly what you want.

Ingredients
4 cups flour
1 cup salt
1-1/2 cups hot water (from tap)
2 teaspoons vegetable oil (optional)

Mix the salt and flour together, then gradually add the water until the dough becomes elastic. (Some recipes call for 2 teaspoons of vegetable oil at this point.) If your mixture turns out too sticky, simply add more flour. If it turns out too crumbly, simply add more water. Knead the dough until it?s a good consistency?then get out rolling pins, cups, bowls, straws, cookie cutters, plastic utensils, and let the fun begin!

If you want colored dough, mix food coloring, powdered drink mix, or paint into the water before adding it to the dry ingredients. Or you can paint your creations after baking them at 200 degrees. Baking times will vary depending on the size and thickness of the object, but make sure that all of it is hard. If the dough starts to darken before cooking is complete, cover with aluminum foil. Painted keepsakes will need to be sealed on all sides with clear varnish or polyurethane spray.

You can store your salt dough in a sealed container in the refrigerator, but usually not more than a couple of days.

I'm definately too late for your trip to HC, Ginger but thought I would add a couple which I used for a party yesterday!!

reindeer

boots

snowman

The familyfun site is lovely. I can't find the links for the other two but they need your imagination!!

Angels were made from 1 large heart (body), 2 medium size (wings), a cirlce (face) and a chenille stick twisted in to a halo

Santas made from a red, 5-pointed star. The top point was his hat with his face drawn below. We used cotton wool to trim his hat and as his beard and we added boots to the bottom two points.

Explanations seem really dodgy!! I wish I could find the links now

Kids had lots of fun, nonetheless.

We got some painted lolly sticks and made lots of different star and snowflake shapes, stuck them together and then stuck on glittery stickers.
