What are the best sewing needles?

Am finally sorting my sewing stuff and realise, despite a mountain of buttons, curtain tape, bobbins and zips, plus scissors of all types and sizes, I have a scarcity of needles.

It has been years since I bought any, I have no idea where to begin. I need something for day to day sewing, taking up trousers type thing, some for hand patchwork, and some to use with stranded cotton embroidery thread as I plan to do some crazy patchwork.

Suggestions very welcome brew cake

I love Clover Black Gold. They're expensive because imported from the US, I think - but incredibly sharp. They're pretty small though and not suitable for everything.

I find modern needles too blunt and rubbish. Often buy old sewing baskets and the needles in 1970s and earlier ones are also much higher quality than contemporary ones.
