Knitting with a circular needle help please!

I've recently taken up knitting again after a very long break. Ive remastered the basic knit and purl stitches OK. I'm now having a stab at knitting a ribbed hat using a circular needle, which I have never used before.

My problem is this - between a knit and a purl stitch, I find myself having to 'post' the ball of wool through the 'hole' in the circular needle in order to get the wool in he right position. However, my knitting looks like a mass of knots rather than nice ribbed stitches! I just can't work it out.

Help!

I can't quite picture what you're doing wrong, but the yarn should stay outside the circle all the time - have a look at (you might want to fast forward to about 1:30)

How do you hold your yarn? I assume in your right hand, which is called throwing or English/American style, rather than in your left, which is called continental. I've chosen an English style video so as not to confuse you with more than one thing at a time!
