Making clothes: where do I start?

I've got myself very annoyed this week at a lack of easily accessible fancy dress costumes for boys. I have a ds 2 and am pregnant with another boy. Basically if they want to dress up as anything not from marvel they are stuck. I figure if its frustrating me now its only going to get worse.

So, I thought if I learnt to sew I might be able to make them costumes in future. I have a sewing machine but have never touched it. Where do i start? Any simple books, online tutorials etc? Im a slow learner but determined

Start with the sewing machine manual and learn to thread, put bobbin in, do basic stitches. There are loads of beginners tutorials on You Tube. Try making something simple like a tote bag to begin with.
