Last time I did it was in school which was a looong time ago but remembered I enjoyed it.

Can anyone tell me what are the basic things I need to get started & explanation of the different terms & where to get bits from. I'm eager to get started but I don't really have a clue!

Easiest way would be to get a kit. Cheap off eBay, quick from somewhere like Hobbycraft or John Lewis. You will need to get yourself a hoop though.

A kit will contain the fabric (aida), needle and all the thread needed. And the chart. Otherwise you can borrow a book from the library for the patterns and assemble all the equipment and threads yourself (not necessarily cheaper than buying a kit).

I recently picked up a teeny-tiny little cross stitch from a department store (£1.50!) as I had a vague idea I wanted to do something with my hands while giving up smoking :D That didn't work and I've nearly finished it

But of course I got ideas above my ability level and found this www.myphotostitch.com/

Yeah a kit sounds like the best option- will have a look on eBay. Thanks.

Yeah I think it'll be good to do in front of the tv while half watching the usual rubbish!

The cross stitch magazines often have free kits with them. There are some nice ones around at this time of year. Have fun! Smile

The current (Nov) edition of CrossStitcher magazine has a cute mini brooch kit free - there are 5 designs to choose from and all are nice and straightforward for a beginner. I also recommend it as it has a nice clear 'Stitch Basics' section to help you get started.

Ooh think I'll pop out and see if I can get a magazine.

I've just picked up some little christmas kits from Hobbycraft. 3for2 at £1.50 each Smile I do love a bargain.
Oh, and I've never used a hoop. Are they good?

I've noticed that lots of the kits don't have the hoop. Are they for bigger projects?

You need to buy a hoop separately. You will probably need a small one and a medium sized one.

As an aside, if you want threads or fabric to make any of the projects in the magazines eBay is really cheap.

There might be a group near you - what area are you in?

I'm decluttering my craft room at the moment. If I find any spare kits you can have them. What sort of things do you think you'll like to stitch?

I'm in Hertfordshire. Wow, that would be great. Anything really- but it would be nice to make things that my dd might like to look at- like animals, flowers, Christmas bits. x
