Knitting help!

I am knitting a waistcoat I found on Ravelry - haven't knitted for years but thought I would be able to manage!

Currently on back

Cast on 81 (89, 97, 105, 113, 121) sts.
WS: K1 [p1, k1] to end.
RS: P1 [k1, p1] to end.
Cont to work rib for 14 more rows.
Row 1 - RS: P1, beg on Row 25 (1, 1, 25, 1, 25), work
cable pattern (patt) 5 (5½, 6, 6½, 7, 7½) times.
Row 2 - WS: K1, on patt Row 26 (2, 2, 26, 2, 26) work patt
5 (5½, 6, 6½, 7, 7½) times.
Cont with patt until piece measures 13½ (13½, 14, 14¼,
14½, 15)" ending after a WS.

I am doing fourth size in - have 105 stitches - odd rows k1, p1 - even rows p1,k1.

I am now up to row 25 where I think I might begin the cable pattern (but am not entirely sure) which I can do no problem - the bit(s) that have confused me are:

1 - should this actually be row 41 (as in first 16 plus 25) or row 25.
2 - my odd rows start with k1 so why is this telling me to start row 25 (or 41) with p1?

Pattern is on Ravelry

Thanks in advance.

from your descriptions I would say 16 rows of rib

then you start the pattern as listed at row 25 onwards

what do you have in your knitting from row 16 to 24??

Thanks - I just carried on k1 p1 (odd) and p1 k1 (even) - the whole thing is knitted in rib - I looked at the photos and couldn't see that anything had changed.

So, I am on R25 but it tells me to P1 first not K1 which will make my rib wonky won't it?

I wanted to carry on with it this morning (while sat watching swimming lessons) but not sure what to do.

Is there a separate bit that explains the cable pattern, because I would assume from those instructions that for the 1st
, 4th and 6th sizes you start on what would be pattern row 25 and the others you start on pattern row 1, but that implies there is a chart or a separate bit explaining the pattern.

So your actual row 17 of knitting would be either row 1 or row 25 of hte pattern depending on which size you are doing.

Hope that make sense Smile

Thank you very much Nettie, there is a separate bit explaining the pattern and row 25 of that does start with K1 - I get it now. I will take it back to row 16 and get going - something to do while watching swimming!

It is going really well, thanks to you Nettie! I had loads of time today - swimming and then piano and singing lessons. I had a bit of work to do ... but knitting won.

Once you had pointed it out I could see that P1 is not the same as p1 - I have probably knitted one item in 30 years and can't quite remember the language of patterns.

I really love it, love the wool I chose which is a dark grey fleck wool and alpaca mix.
