Timegirl you made me laugh - your dh actually requested a hideous jumper ? You must put a photo on your profile. I now think I will made dh a hideous jumper, and when he's annoyed me I'll persuade him to wear it - preferably to the pub grin

It doesn't matter if the second ball of wool is the same colour or a different colour (just do what you think looks best). The key is that you end up with two balls as you are going to knit the right hand and left hand side separately (i.e. the two bits which will go over the shoulder on either side of your dh neck). I expect that it may look nicer to use the same colour as it would be more symmetrical.

Hi again its timegirl. you know about the wool to add when binding off 14 sts ?,well i think the change of wool is just to make a new colour line, and not to knit 2 colours together, dont you think?? .to carry on my change of colours up to the neck edge. Is that right.. from what iv read. or like you said to carry on with two colours AAAAARRRRGGGG HELP.. THANKS AGAIN ..

Hi Timegirl, I'm by no means an expert but I'll try my best.
First part - shape neck (rs) - just making sure you've turned your work and letting you know that you're starting the next bit looking at the right side.
1st row - Work 38 stitches - follow the pattern (Knit most probably) for 38 stitches and join in another ball of wool (so you have two balls of wool that you will be using once you have completed this row.
Bind off centre (14 st) means cast off the next 14 stitches (you will be making a hole for the neck). Work to end - knit or purl the last 38 stitches. You will have finished the 1st row of the neck opening and you will have 76 stitches on your needle (90 - 14 cast off)

Working both sides at once is just a note to let you know that for the next bit you should work across the whole row without turning (Sometimes when working neck & shoulders you keep some stitches on a holder and work one side then the next) but you have two balls of wool joined, one for each side of the neck.

2nd row - Bind off 4 stitches at each neck edge once - so, purl or whatever 34 stitches, then cast off the next 4 on the first side using the first ball of wool. Pick up the next ball of wool and cast off the first 4 stitches after the neck hole and continue to the end of the row.

3rd and subsequent rows repeat as for the second row but cast off 3 stitches at the neck edge (so row 3 knit 30 stitches and cast off the next 3) on this row then 2 next time and 1 until you have the right number of stitches on your needle.

hope that helps - some of these things are easier in person! grin

Hi im new to this website, but hope i will get some help. iv started knitting a jumper for my husband its in many different colours. Iv got to the part on the pattern thats says :- shape neck. well im boggled !! cant seem to get it right.
Could you please help someone??. First it said to end on ws with 90 sts, so iv done that, but then following it said this :-- shape neck: (rs) work 38 sts), join another ball of colour being used and bind off center (14 sts), work to end. Working both sides at once, bind off 4sts at each neck edge once, 3 sts once, 2 sts once, then dec 1st at each neck edge once, leaving 28 sts each side. So does this mean i have to keep turning the knitting but it doesnt say that!! Please someone help but can you explain bit by bit line by line?? i havent knitted in a long time.. hope to hear from a well read knitter !!xps how can i be on (ws wrong side) then have to be on rs( right side) at beginning ?? confused..
