Peel offs - do you like them or loathe them?

soapbox · 07/02/2006 23:31

I'm in the loathe camp!

I particularly dislike cards with a peel off 'happy birthday' on them!

And I have quickly checked the gallery to make sure I'm not being impolite

I do use them occasionally. I have found that I have sort of outgrown them but they serve their purpose especially when you are starting out.

I also loathe them.

i agree with dingle. the kids now use the ones i have left over.
however, i have tried sticking them onto card, inking over them, removing them immediately then embossing the ink, even triple embossing the ink. gives a good crisp negative image. BUT you have to have an OK peel-off image to start with.

I might try that then!

I got a bundle of them tucked in as a free gift with an order I'd placed and this thread was prompted by the 'what on earth am I going to do with these' reaction

I bought shed loads of them when I was starting out, but now think they look like shite. I would never buy them again apart from gold/cream wedding invites/ silver/white wedding invites. But I would never rely on them.

scuttles in.... I quite like them in their place... I do use them occasionally.... but then again I'm a novice and have only been at it a few months... scuttles out with tail between legs....

I especially like them on transparency and painted in with glass paint or acrylic paint

They have their uses- eg stencilled over with chalk or ink, and I do use holo blues ones on my scary gothic cards, but I know what you mean. DH HATES them. I did have a nice card I made where I used one acetate though and even I liked it, which is rare with my cards! I do use them on kids cards though for lettering, when I haven't got any decent alphabet stickers, they like their names on them don't they.

I have a lovely card in front of me now though made by someone else with pink peel off happy birthday on: works a treat. So, not my usual scene but an open mind I guess.

If you mount the Happy Birthday stickers on a piece of card cut a square or rectange or use a sizzix cut and mount it with 3D sticker that can look quit good it's when people put them flat on the card they look tacky and when people use a font thats too big for the card thats really tacky. Putting them on acetate and mounting them looks OK.
Have a look at this I've just uploaded this to see what I'm talking about

what do you use instead though?

Bearing in mind I have crap handwriting. I have the sizzix doodle thing alpha and the sizzlets playground plus I'm waiting for the ellison little stuff alpha so i have 3 alphas and some other lettering that i'm intending to use for my scrapping

I use rub ons if I want a message on the front of the card.

For the inside I either do an insert on the computer or if it is a cheapie card (i.e for the DC's school friends) use a stamp.

But I am a newbie - I'm sure you've all got loads of ideas!

I really didn;t mean to offend anyone who uses peel offs, I just wasn't very enthused by the pack of them I got! I think I will give them to DD to use, she won't know any different

Wow, gorgeous card Carolinett, I think your peel offs look brill. There is definitely a time & a place and you have worked it out perfectly. Tell me is that vase Fimo. The card looks very 3D. It's lovely.

I admit I have used them and still have some in the drawer.

My excuse is only because I couldn't think of an alternative - but now (almost!) I have a Sizzix alphabet to play with !

'I'll get me coat'......or I might even FLOUNCE !

The pots are these good old ebay
There's allsorts of shaped pots.
I also use crystal lacquers somtimes in between peel offs. I must say I don't use them that often but the alphabets are real handy and the odd butterfly.
A bit depressing but this is a card I made for the Reverend this week to say thank you for DH's mums funeral service. I used butterfly stickers and crystal lacquer on this booker card card

Carolinett that is a truly lovely card, possibly one of the bestest hand made cards I have seen. It looks soo professional and it's very different. Not depressing at all. I think that it's one for the Papercraft competition.

Er Whizz, no flouncing today, I have a headache

Thanks for the complement It's nice to get complements from fellow card makers. I think I'd better put some cheerie cards up there.

I don't use them as much now, and I like doing the negative image with them, or mount them like carolinett suggested. I find the 'shapes' useful e.g. I have some thinnish silver lines and also the corner type ones, and use small circles for champagne bubbles.

But now I have a sizzix and 2 alphabets- I might get bored of those in time to come

I don't think I will be putting any of them on my cards They remind me of something can't think what it is.
Can anyone else

Bloody hell I must of missed that thread. Who said that, have they been to "spec savers" what colour is the sky on their planet? Let me know who it was and I'll get them at playtime with my peels off stickers.
Card makers are lovely, talented people as long as you don't upset us

Gosh Champs - I'm really sorry if this thread came across as being snotty about peel-offs!

It is just an opinion - plenty people like them and use them and that is fine! Really wasn't a comment on people's cards at all!

Please don't take it to heart!!!
