Hi mumsnetters ...
first off, this is a man posting (!!) hope that's ok :-)
i am posting here because this has been a really useful forum for the past few days, which have been some of the most worrying of my life.
my wife went in for her first scan at 13 weeks and we got a nuchal transparency of 3.9mm which, combined with high PAPP-A bloods, and a high age (39) meant a 1 in 4 chance of chromosome problems.
We took the CVS on Friday at UCLH (she was amazingly brave throughout) and got the results back an hour ago.
All clear.
This weekend was, of course, just awful. Odds of 1 in 4 sound impossibly slim in the context of the thousands to one against you expect (or hope for anyway).
But four to one means three good chances and we lucked out I guess.
I am very aware that somewhere tonight, someone took a bad call and my heart goes out to them. I can only imagine now (thankfully) how terrifying that situation is.
But I kept telling my wife that we needed to stay positive. There may still be something in the full report. And of course there may be a heart issue which we'll see at 20 weeks. But somehow I think we'll be ok.
Anyway. I just wanted to say thank you to the wonderful mums who have shared their stories and experiences here and on a couple of other sites. Generally, googling medical stuff is a bad idea I think. But in this regard these experiences where a real source of hope to us through a rotten few days of dark imaginings.
Thanks for being there for us :-)
