Antenatal tests

If screening test comes back as such high risk is having an Amnio just a confirmation of results.

I am not feeling very lucky so this may be pessimistic but 2 weeks ago I had my 12 week scan and al seemed ok - Nuchal fold 1.4 and was told everything looked good. Had the blood test but forgot about it as it took longer than the 2 days promsed to come back as high risk for Downs etc. So when I get the call to say I have a 1/70 chance of having a baby with downs I was obviously shaken. I decided not to have CVS as lost a baby last year at just over 11 weeks and we took ten months TTC before falling pregnant with this baby and just didn't want to risk it and so opted for intergrated test. I just had the results back today saying its now a 1/6 chance! I am completely floored by this news and rang ARC to get the results clearer in my head (MW a bit useless on phone!) and they said that if I had an Amnio I now fall in the category of 1/5 turn out to have a baby with Downs or other chromosome disorder. I now feel as if having the Amnio is just a confirmation that the tests were actually correct. Has anyone really had good news after having such a high risk?

What a difficult time for you and I'm sorry you are having to go through all of this. I am a midwife and have experience of a result like this coming back as unaffected. Yes, the result is very high risk, but the chance is still 4/5 that it will not have downs. Try and make an appointment to speak to a fetal anomaly specialist midwife or consultant if your hosp has one, if not ask for referral to a hospital that does, if that will be useful to you. good luck with everything.

Thanks WITWN. I have an appointment next week to discuss Amnio for weds. Only thing is I will be just 15 weeks and everything I read about Amnio happens after 16 weeks. Not sure if this means theres more of a risk?!

Not sure I could wait another 10 days though - MY DH and I got no sleep last night with worry. :(

afaik amnio can be carried out 15 weeks onwards. if your appt is to discuss it it may be a few days before it is actually carried out. again it's worth checking at your centre what their miscarriage rate is, as it may be higher or lower than the average and so will enable you to make a choice. it's very difficult for you and I hope you're both getting lots of support.

Good luck for your results, I am 1;5 risk and amnio confirmed DS, we are now getting excited about babies arrival, really positive about it :)

Don't give up hope yet the NF was only 1.4

Having Amnio tomorrow. Freshfruitsalad -I'm happy that you are positive. I wish I was as strong as you.

I don't have a good feeling about my situation. Not helped by the consultant saying he'd not seen such a high risk as mine in a while and said if I liked a drink every now and again I should have a glass of wine tonight!

Why do they do that Sad
It's do insensitive like they are taking all hope away from you, we were 1:5 but other markers kept appearing so before the amnio they were saying 90% chance of ds
Amnio was fine, I'm a needle phobe but honestly, it's just scary, no pain, no worse than a blood test
Good luck

Thanks FFS. I had Amnio yesterday. Wasn't pleasant but wasn't terrible either. Worst thing was my doc not knowing if he should call my baby a 'baby' or 'the pregnancy'. I kept saying baby as it is my baby no matter what happens! Results tomorrow. The waiting is going to kill me!

Good news. Just shows that a risk is only a probability and not a done deal!
