WHAT?? Who is debating this with you?

Is it just in Aus this apparently happens? Do they automatically offer it to women over a certain age?

I would google it. Sounds a bit much to me! Is the person who says it is, getting muddled with something else?

apparently everyone of every age is offered it and noone declines

and no they don't mean the triple test I checked, they mean the "needle in tummy" test

and now we're at one of those annoying "agree to disagree" stand offs, which is so annoying caus I MUST BE RIGHT! Grin

It's an invasive test with risk to the fetus - I cannot imagine it is true for a second

Yes I think over 35 or so they heavily counsel you to have the amnio.
All my mates who were that age + did it.

Despite being over 35 for two pregnancies in Australia and having already had a child with Down syndrome there were never any suggestion to me to have an amnio. The only one who mentioned it was the gp in the uk when I was forest pregnant with dd2. ( we moved to aus during that pregnancy.). In fact the amnio was not even offered. I had a unchallenged translucency screening with dd3 and my odds were fine similar to those of a 26 yo even though I was 38 and still no one suggested to me I had to have an amnio.
