Borderline Triple Test Result

From reading a few of the posts here I can tell my results aren't as heartbreaking as others but I had a really surprising result of a 1 in 251 chance of Down's Syndrome based on my bloods and I am only 24, healthy background, no family history e.t.c., 12 week scan was clear. My area don't offer the nuchal measurement result and apparently I am "low risk" as the cut off here is 1 in 150.

I know that doesn't sound so bad but I am v worried, especially when comparing the result to my first pregnancy with my ds which gave me odds of 1 in 1250 only two years ago.

I have been taking iron tablets due to low ferritin levels and have been googling like a demon, worrying whether this could affect the baby's health or throw the test at all. Even worrying that my symptoms are due to a thyroid disorder which can cause birth defects. I am driving myself insane.

Have booked a private scan and more bloods called a Quad test for this evening and am stressing over the results already as this test is not diagnostic and will only give me another "1 in.." number and I am not sure how reassured I will be by it even if the result is good. If the result is bad I will be strongly considering more intrusive testing.

This isn't even a question and I know my problems seem like nothing compared to some, just wanted to get it all out!

It's far more helpful to turn the statistic around like that, thanks! I can rationalise to myself during the day that my statistic is just that and a low risk etc it's just that niggle in the back of my mind in the dead of night telling me that something must be wrong to have received a result like that and I can't get it out of my head.

i know the worry will be there, it is only normal and as parents / parents-to-be that is what we do.... we worry, we want the best for our children!! but i agree with BNE, reversing your odds the most possible result is that everything will be absolutely fine with your little one. try and keep positive, someone once told me that there is no point in worrying about something until you actually have something definite to worry about. right now your worry is based on a statistic. i hope that this evenings private scan and quad test bring you some reassurance. if the odds come back even better that there is nothing wrong, you should then be able to relax and enjoy your pregnancy.
please let us know how you get on - in the meantime i'm thinking about you and hoping that you get the results you want xxx

Tests came back as a 1:13 risk. Hospital just called - had a missed call from an unknown number earlier and just got a sick feeling. Will ring midwife in the morning to book an amnio as too late to so anything now. Just feel numb.

Im sorry, I had 1:20 combined results (nuchal and bloods) I think just bloods isnt as accurate. Still 1:13 means 12 are ok. I know its easy to see that now I know the waiting is hard and obviously you always think the worse.
We had a CVS and that came back clear. We went on to have further scans as it can indicate heart problems but this was also clear.

Hope it all goes well

Hi Particles

You'll probably have had a horrible night with no sleep, I know that your mind has probably been racing and there is nothing worse than uncertainty, especailly where our babies are concerned. But stay strong; Dillig is right, here is much more chance there is nothing wrong than there is. You said yourself, these tests are an indication, they are not diagnostic. There can be all kinds of reasons why your levels are up/ down, and they do things like factor in your age too. Unfortunately, no one tells you this when they deliver 'the blow'.

There have been lots of ladies posting in this forum who have been given 1:12, 1:10, 1:5 who have then gone on to have the diagnostic tests and been given the all clear. Please keep this in the front of your mind, get the amnio booked, (cry if you have to, scream and shout but make them get you in early!), then try as hard as you can to take a deep breath and distrct yourself as much as you can. And come back here for some virtual hugs whenever you need xxx

Have namechanged but it's me! Just wanted to thank you all for your support, I posted and ran as was having phases of wanting to talk and then not wanting to think about it at all but I wanted to let you know that the amnio results came back clear for the main three, have to wait another week for full results but looks like everything is fine and I can get on with enjoying the pregnancy!

Thank you for your kindness and help during a really worrying time.
