CVS - no quick result available

I had my CVS on Thursday last week, after a nuchal fold of 4.2mm and possible cyctic hygroma was picked up on my dating scan and have just been a big ball of nerves ever since. I was told I would get the quick results on Tuesday or Wednesday this week but instead had a call yesterday from the consultant telling me that the sample couldn't be read correctly as too many of my own cells were mixed in with the sample. I had to make a mad dash across Cardiff to Llandough hospital for a blood sample to be taken which was then couriered to Bristol Fetal Medicine labs so that they could work out what was me and what was from the fetus!

I now have to wait for the full karotype to get my results which might be Monday but might take as long as Thursday - two weeks after my CVS. I am going mad waiting for these results, time since last Monday just seems to have stood still and I can't believe that I still don't know anymore than I did ten days ago :(

Sorry for your current stress levels, can I suggest you get in touch with ante natal results and choices, ARC. Based in London, they have a telephone support line and are a non judgemental, non personal agenda charity. They won a Guardian newspaper charity award a couple of years ago.

All best

Hi just a thought but can you ask for detailed scan in the meantime to look for soft markers? or anther CVS if you can cope with it as it could still be quicker than 10 days if you had one tomorrow. take care x

Really, really sorry to hear that junebug. The wait is hellish, I know, particularly as you were expecting to get definitive news this week.

Sincerely hoping you won't have to wait much longer - you must be extremely anxious, to say the least Sad.

Small consolation I know, but at least when you do get the results, you will be fully informed of all you need to know.

Will be thinking of you, and wishing you all the very best. Hope you can find some way of helping the time to pass more quickly. x

junebug8 I had the same problem! In my case, I had to have the CVS re-done 5 days after the first CVS test! Devastated did not come close to what I felt. Thank goodness they got a really experienced consultant to do the second CVS and they said the miscarriage risk was NOT increased by having the two tests so close together. They also rushed the initial results so that I wouldn't be waiting too much longer. Can you have a chat with whoever did your CVS about whether they can rush the results? It's all a distant memory now as DS1 is now 2.8! And he is the cheekiest and healthiest toddler you have ever met. So do keep your spirits up. The way I saw it then, I must have used up all my bad luck having to have the second CVS test that I was definitely due some good news and I got my good news... :)
