Due date tomorrow. And I was so sure I'd have an early baby... You can still do it, little one!

So many of my lovely + very artistic friends are Sags, I would be happy to have one. (And it may be my only consolation if I go too far overdue.)

Congratulations on all the babies! beepbeep, very happy for you that all went well and where you wanted. Martha is a lovely name, I would have it for ours but dh not keen.

Promise to catch up on all the posts, but trying to clear up my work desk, so can lie belly up all next week.

My order of nappies has arrived and they're all washed and ready for a newborn bum. longway was it you that posted the link to the Totnes company? Thank you, the site is great, that's where I ordered from.

We also got a crib to go in our bedroom - cot too big - and the bedding for that is just drying. And most important of all we got a lovely knitted stuffed hedgehog called Hugo from just discovered lovely toy shop in Banbury to watch over lo. So, I'd say we're pretty much there...

Hmmm. DH, DD and myself are all Saggitarians (makes budgeting for Christmas a nightmare). Would it be an issue of this one was a Scorpio?!

Went for a walk this morning, and am definitely getting periods of discomfort, but nothing like last night's contractions. DD is down for a nap, and I think I'll follow her.

Barnowl - couldn't agree more re the breast shields! I'm so p*ssed off I wasn't told about them sooner. I tried so hard to bf and was doing quite well but then my nipples started to crack and no amount of lansinoh helped. Then they went beyond cracking and were a complete mess and bleeding all the time and so painful I wanted to be sick everytime i fed him and crying my eyes out all of the time. I tried hand expressing to give them a rest but got depressed because the 7 hours that day hand expressing was 7 hours not holding my son, or having quiet time for myself. I was finally told about shield after 3 days of agony and I gave them a try, but my milk wasn't coming though well enough and he was spending 2 hours on the boob and then nailing a full bottle afterwards (which was supposed to be 'top up'). Then it was even too painful with the nipple shields as the damage had already been done. I was really depressed for a week, sobbing all the time because I felt like a failure. I really feel that if I'd known about the shields before my nipples got so bad that I would be successfully breastfeeding now.

Preggo you sound like me right now thinking of giving up BF after just 6 days as one nipple is in shreds and I can't bear to put him on. DH has just gone to get a pump - was going to try expressing from that side. Is it worth it? The other side isn't so bad - pretty sore but bearable. He has a good feed on taht side. But weight is an issue too: he's not putting enough on sigh!

BBL, preggo, is there no bf support you could get help? I'm only a first timer so I'm not the right person for wise words but I have heard sooo many times how helpful they can be and often it is only a minor problem which causes so much pain and cracked nipples. It would really be a shame if you want to bf and someone could actually help you easily.
And BBL, I think, they are quite relaxed about the weight nowadays, it's more about several wet nappies a day that they have to produce.

katster, that must be really frustrating. But maybe after all that preparation, the actual birth will be nice and easy? and soon of course.

hobnob, I still think that sounds quite good. I'm sure, real contractions will start soon... any minute maybe. And you will have a nice and natural birth just in time!!!

BBL Don't give up just yet! Try expressing from that side, it is definately worth it. I had the same problem when I had ds and I expressed from 1 side for a day and the following day it felt a lot better. As for the weight gain, it's still early days and not unnormal for babies to lose a bit of weight and take a while to go back on. Speak to a breast feeding counsellor for more advice, you are doing really well so don't beat yourself up...

Oh BBL so sorry bf is so painful, I have heard that expressing from the sore side to give it a rest can help. However, don't beat yourself up if you feel you can't manage it anymore, can the midwife help at all?

becky I feel your pain. I found the pump was just as painful as Joe latching on and could only express by hand. Definitely worth a go if you can still feed from the other side. I'd really recommend asking your midwife if you can use the shields whilst your nipples recover as they could make the difference between being able to bf and not.

ursi, how do I get to the postnatal thread? Glad things went quickly for you in the end. I'll read your story when I find the thread. Unfortunately it's too late for me to bf now as my milk has gone. I'd tried everything and had midwife appointments every day for a while, but my poor nips were both too far gone

Preggo it is so hard, isn't it? I just tell myself that perhaps some people are destined not to be able to do this while others are lucky. It's not from want of trying or effort or endurance. I've tried three times with my DSs and each time the same result...

I've just pumped 30ml of milk. It did hurt a bit but not as much as having Toby latch on. I love him to bits but I can't face having him on my nipples

I too have several arty friends who are sagi's, they are fun and outgoing. Alas, they are all hedonists too so hope this boy shows a little more constraint than they appear to have!

Tomorrow is the cusp isn't it? Is that the actual crossover day, so all babies born tomorrow onwards are sagi's? I was sort of hoping for a scorpio, as my mother was one...although she did have a sting in the tail which was very sharp!

I had a panic. For some reason I did not register the end of the last thread. When I logged on, i saw no-one had posted and i was like what has happened? Before remembering the link which i had not clicked on! Phew, thought my lifeline had gone!

BBL i am so sorry you in struggling with the pain. I wish i could give you some answers re bf, but i can perhaps say something positive about the weight loss? DD dropped weight when she was born, and she was already low birthweight, she was slow to grow and I constantly doubted by milk, not helped by a HV who compounded that. Then we saw a HV who told us that it is common for babies to find their own weight, and this often means they appear to drop more but are in actual fact finding their own size, which is different to inside the womb where they grow to meet your uterus size. I felt much better, and when i started weaning DD, she ate like a horse and still continued to grow at the same, steady, slow pace. Even now she is small for her age, it is just her. I am saying that, while you need to keep an eye on the weight loss, do not presume it is your milk yet. Give yourself time. (but, if you really feel you cannot manage with the lf, you have done great to do this much as it is very tough so don't feel bad).
