I promise to try very hard to keep my ranty posts from this shiny new thread... dunno what came over me... bloomin' hormones are making me all passionate about trying to empower all you lovely ladies to have fabulous orgasmic births grin
maybe I should have a lie down..... blush

puzzletree Thu 19-Jan-12 21:49:09

ooh I quite fancy an orgasmic birth!

Great title, although my face isn't too blooming! More pasty and covered in spots! Will pop back asap, bit manic at the mo as started new job on Wed grin

Dee13 Thu 19-Jan-12 22:04:02

Nice shiny thread grin
Has anyone else signed up for local NCT class? DH and I are looking forward to it but would be interested to know what others think

louisdog Thu 19-Jan-12 22:28:42

Thanks for the new thread!

Dee I have signed up for our local NCT as it's my first one, but have heard mixed things about whether they are worthwhile. Maybe they vary even on individual classes due to the instructor.

beached Thu 19-Jan-12 22:41:37

great new title grin

holy sh*t I just looked up NCT classes, seems pretty pricey? how can they justify that price <if i'm reading it right?>

Fishpond Thu 19-Jan-12 23:37:04

Marking place

I've signed up for the ante and post natal NCT courses despite the eye watering cost. My Sister in Law enjoyed her classes so much that she now volunteers for our local branch. She also made some very good friends from it who she still keeps in touch with regularly. As DH and I are one of the first couples in our circle of friends to have kids, I think it would be good for us to meet other new parents. I also think it will help us to feel more prepared as there's only so much you can get from books. We're hoping to do the NHS classes too if we can fit them in around work.

Dee13 Fri 20-Jan-12 08:13:29

beached Your right, it's not cheap. DH was quite logical as broke the cost down into an hourly rate and then it seems reasonable. Only way we could justify it! I've heard such great things about it though so hopefully it'll be worth it hmm

bettyspaghetti33 Fri 20-Jan-12 08:26:50

(Just posted this on the old one when I realised right at the end that all you guys had jumped ship :p ).

Morning all,

Sorry I have been away for quite a while. What with DD having teething and cough/cold hell at night and me getting practically no sleep whatsoever its been pretty full on lately. Hope everyone is well and doing well with their pregnancies. I must admit to finally getting a proper baby bump that now sticks out a little way under my clothing making it rather noticeable! ( So proud of my bump!! smile )

LadyKatieJ just read your last post and I for one am very interested in what you're saying being a fellow VBACer hopeful. You seem to have done far more research into the situation than I. I was also told about the need to be continuously monitored as apparently all VBAC women need to be and I will be opposing that decision at every chance I get. Not sure if anyone will ever take me seriously enough to actually put it in my notes though, but surely if you are in labour and opposing it they cannot force it on you??

So sorry to hear about your c-section story. It seems so backwards that the powers that be take this attitude of needing to control childbirth to such an extent.

wannabekiwi Fri 20-Jan-12 08:37:35

We've signed up for the NCT classes too for same reason as Golden. I'm looking forward to meeting other new parents locally, as having lived in NZ for past three years, it would be nice to widen our circle of friends here, as a lot of existing ones have moved away or moved on.

painterly Fri 20-Jan-12 09:54:58

NCT works out as roughly £10 per friend, or £20 per couple grin.

I'm not blooming either, just doing some positive thinking for us all... maybe if we read it everyday we may subliminally tell our faces to stop creating hormonal spots!

painterly Fri 20-Jan-12 10:11:57

Those who do want to peer into the murky waters of what lies ahead, I find this birthing site really amazing. It help me move my first at 35 weeks when she was still the wrong way up.

-- first timers skip this bit if you like as it's a labour rant, you'll know all about them in 6 months time grin --

It also improved my knowledge of what happens in the last stages of labour (between 8 and 10 cms) when they try and hurry you along but actually the babies' head is shaping and turning into the birth canal which actually can't be rushed. They nearly gave me another c-section with number two because the head kept bobbing away instead of engaging. I insisted on standing up rather than lying down (bloody obviously really to let gravity help) and got my vbac, but without that knowledge burnt into my brain (and my partners), I would have just been led by their panic in the moment and probably had the section.

I don't think you can be too well informed actually. If all goes well, it's irrelevant (a bit like doing the pereneal massage when you end up with a c-section), but when the shit hits the fan, being able to speak up for what your body knows you want goes a really long way. I still recommend anyone interested in a natural birth to read the farm and understand that feeling positive and relaxed is basically 50% of getting a good birth (not necessarily the birth you wanted) but a good one that won't end in 6 months of depression and panic when you get pregnant again.

There ladyK, have joined your bandwagon!!

LadyKatieJ Fri 20-Jan-12 10:16:42

I loved my NCT classes.... not for what they taught (although was pretty good) but just got to meet people in the same situation, due around the same time and over 2 years on we still meet up and I've made a couple of great friends from it! We used to meet up when the babies were small and it was a huge source of comfort and reasurrance that we were all going through the same challenges!

betty yes I'm a VBAC bore really grin, just so shocked the more I read into it how much crap we're fed and how much scare-mongering goes on. Mostly down to fear of litigation on the part of consultants/hospitals and also their knowledge of the latest research is usually very limited or at best out-of-date. We also sadly tend to take whatever a doctor/health professional says as the complete truth and we dare not question as they are supposed to be the experts, but all it takes is a little bit of proper research to see for yourself how flawed they can be.

The best advice I can give VBACers (and everyone really) is that if you are faced with a doctor/midwife/consultant who tries to bully scare you into something you really don't want or are unsure of i.e. continuous monitering, induction, having your waters broken... anything really, you just say calmly "Thank you for your suggestion of blah blah blah and I understand and acknowledge everything you have told me however I do not CONSENT to blah blah whatever" now bugger off !!!

The magic word is consent, they cannot touch you if you say (or even better put all over your medical notes) that you do not consent to something. It turns you into the power that be!! grin

painterly Fri 20-Jan-12 10:19:07

I second Lady K (and cry copiously to show they are unnecessarily stressing you out)

PrincessMango Fri 20-Jan-12 10:40:04

Nice new thread....I'm glowing <gloat>. No spots and lovely skin, if it wasn't for the dry skin round my nose, that is! Oh, complete aside, last night as I couldn't breathe through my nose, had my mouth open all night. It dried out so much, I think my epiglottis was dried out too and I couldn't swallow! Not nice!

Anyway!

NCT classes - I'm in two minds. Seem v expensive, but I would be up for it. I doubt my DH would be keen to go and meet new people though. He tends to be anti-social and too busy! Have good friends with babies from church, but always like new people too. I doubt we will go, tbh, but bit jealous of those that do.

Readynow Fri 20-Jan-12 10:44:02

I have signed up for NCT as most people I know who have had babies said it was a brilliant place to meet new local mum's so we decided to give it a go as this is our first.

I'm back from my gtt blood tests. That was the longest 2 hours of my life. My partner had to take my kids to school as was there at 8am. Will have the results next week fingers crossed I don't have gd this time.

LadyKatieJ Fri 20-Jan-12 11:25:38

I second painterly !! grin Wish I had found that website last time as it's brilliant (well I wish someone had told me my son was breech BEFORE I went into labour... midwife failed to notice sigh angry )

I feel bad for all you first-timers reading all my ramblings, you're probably all thinking "blimey I'm just getting used to this pregnancy lark and I've got to think about the BIRTH... EEK!
Really you don't need to 'think' about it, just trust your instincts and your body and the rest will fall into place smile Oh and don't be scared (or let anyone scare you), it's all worth it wink

PrincessMango Fri 20-Jan-12 11:30:46

Thanks for those words of encouragement LadyKatie. You're right - I'm aware that it'd be easy to worry about the unknown and obsess about it. But I think that won't help either anyone. I tend to quite positive, but will trust my insincts. It's hard without reading up on all eventualities to know when you should trust the medical profession and when you should trust yourself.
