To think Jo Whiley should stop repeating her name?

Is it me or does Jo Whiley...that is Jo Whiley tell us who she is every 30 seconds? 'I am Jo Whiley...join me later..cos I a Jo Whiley...............

ihatethecold Wed 26-Mar-14 06:14:52

Maybe she forgets. grin

Bluestocking Wed 26-Mar-14 06:57:21

I have it on good authority that she has the attention span of a goldfish. Her producer writes JO WHILEY in big letters on post-it notes and sticks them all round the studio. Then whenever her eye alights on one of the post-it notes she's reminded of her identity and reminds her listeners too.

jetsetlil Wed 26-Mar-14 08:19:00

She has always kind of annoyed me so changed station. 6 music is the way forward!!

i like jo whiley.

i like her on the radio that is. her music.

HesterShaw Wed 26-Mar-14 08:50:51

There is one major reason why I can't stand listening to her: she uses "track" as a synonym for "song". It makes me grind my teeth.

ephemeralfairy Wed 26-Mar-14 10:59:09

Oh my lord she gives me the rage! I think she's inarticulate and a terrible interviewer. Does anyone remember that weird music chat show she hosted in the late 90s? All she really did was simper and flirt desultorily with members of minor indie bands of the day.

flipchart Wed 26-Mar-14 11:05:34

I like her show.
hester. I found mot people I know, even prehistoric DH, use the word track these days.

Sallyingforth Wed 26-Mar-14 11:11:01

I'm sure she will be glad that you've mentioned her name too smile

<never heard of her before>

ResponsibleAdult Wed 26-Mar-14 11:15:48

Gives me the rage too angry. I find she always come across as just a little bit too smug about herself. Ephemeral, I think it was that late night music show can't remember name as too old that put me right off her. Couldn't possibly listen to her radio show without shooting myself. Probably perfectly innocuous in person, so totally irrational.

HillyHolbrook Wed 26-Mar-14 11:31:44

I did radio as part of a media degree hester- song is not industry terminology wink

I'm not a Jo Whiley fan though, she grates on me big style. She does say her name an awful lot, doesn't she? I hate that, like I hate when people use mine every other sentence when talking to me, but it's worse when you keep saying your own!

jonicomelately Wed 26-Mar-14 11:33:57

I want to like her, but I can't.

HesterShaw Wed 26-Mar-14 11:38:47

I don't care <obstinate> It's the way she says it.

Glitterspy Wed 26-Mar-14 13:18:36

Oh my goodness Jo Whiley! Soooo bloody annoying and smug and hugely pleased with herself. And why, please? hmm

DollyParsnip Wed 26-Mar-14 14:12:40

I used to like Jo Whiley but find her self-referential stuff really irritating. Not sure if it's a Radio 2 thing but she does come over quite badly, not just on radio but also on the telly when she does all the live music coverage.

I think she introduced the "big sister" approach to broadcasting, but Lauren Laverne on 6 Music has taken Jo Whiley's approach and run with it, managing to be warm, funny and insightful without being smug.

That said (without being tokenistic) there are still far to few women in radio and I would still take a day of Jo Whiley than Steve Wright and Jeremy Vine!

UterusUterusGhali Wed 26-Mar-14 14:16:20

I like her.

I wish she'd replace Steve wright.

sittingatmydeskagain Wed 26-Mar-14 14:20:41

I used to go swimming with her, when I was a toddler.

HesterShaw Wed 26-Mar-14 14:26:23

Oh God, Jeremy Vine <disgusted>

I do like Ken Bruce though. Like a nice cup of tea and biscuit.

MotleyCroup Wed 26-Mar-14 14:59:02

I don't mind Jo Whiley, she always looks upbeat.

My favourite DJ is Sara Cox, love her. Always makes me chuckle.

Springheeled Wed 26-Mar-14 15:15:53

Cerys Matthews' show is GREAT

squoosh Wed 26-Mar-14 15:17:30

I like Cerys. Much more than Whiley or Cox.

ephemeralfairy Wed 26-Mar-14 15:45:21

Having had my rant I realise that I've never listened to her R2 show, I'm just rememebering her on R1 and the telly.
6 Music is my radio station of choice. And Radio 4 of course. I've been too old for R1 since I was about 17... grin

HesterShaw Wed 26-Mar-14 15:48:29

I love Cerys. She is my total girlcrush. If I'd ever had a daughter, she would have been called Cerys.

dammitsue Wed 26-Mar-14 15:52:59

But she does that horrible gasping thing!? How can anyone bear to listen to her bleating on untill her voice is a guttering wheeze..then Whooooosh! Great big gasp.

HesterShaw Wed 26-Mar-14 16:07:08

I mainly love her for her Catatonia days and songs like this and this.

Blueberrybaby Wed 26-Mar-14 17:27:51

I can't bloody stand her. I gave up listening to Radio 1, many moons ago in my mid/late 20s. I'm now mid/late 30s. I started to feel I was pushing the limit with their age group demographic, so figured it was time to shift over to something else. Yet what I couldn't fathom was that she was STILL broadcasting on there, until well into her 40s. I didn't and still don't get it. She was old enough to be the mother of most of her listeners and her interviews were far too gushy about how cool all these groups were. She was like some simpering, trying to be hip 'cool', down with the kids Mum. The absolute worst times were when she would broadcast her morning show on Radio 1, the day after the Brits or maybe Glastonbury and she would be constantly apologizing for how 'hungover' she was and name dropping all the people she had partied with the previous night. Oh sod off. Rant over.

Echocave Wed 26-Mar-14 19:17:26

I've always quite liked Jo Whiley, don't know why. I actually think she might be ins of those 'effortlessly cool' types [disclaimer: am totally uncool so not sure I can judge]. Lauren Laverne's ok on the radio but I have to switch over when she's on the TV as I find her glib, smug and a bit shallow. Her stint on the culture show was awful as I don't think she had a clue what she was talking about. I think she was axed in favour of that art critic bloke - because he knows a bit more about it.

winkbingo Wed 26-Mar-14 19:34:13

Another Cerys fan here - she makes it seem effortless being so cool

RafaIsTheKingOfClay Wed 26-Mar-14 20:30:41

I had a massive girlscrush on Cerys as a teenager. Was completely obsessed with Catatonia.

I think the constant repetition of Catatonia albums and singles almost drove my mum to a breakdown. That's All Folks played on repeat for about a fortnight was probably the point that would have broken her.

LaQueenOfTheSpring Wed 26-Mar-14 20:44:07

Ah yes, the terribly smug Jo 'Hey, I've had a drink with the band' Wiley...both her, and Fiona Bruce are enormously pleased with themselves and both do that annoying 'slightly shaking their heads, when emphasising a point, whilst at the same time making their fringe fall seductively in their eyes'

Maybe she does forget her name....she came into the shop I used to work in a few years ago and I kid you not, she had a velour track suit with her initials embroidered on it! hmm

squoosh Wed 26-Mar-14 20:56:07

She always does that thing of bowing her head a bit and then peeping up in a coy Diana-esque way.

Capricorn76 Wed 26-Mar-14 20:59:28

Jo 'I discovered Nirvana' Whiley turned me off Radio 1. I just found her annoying and the bands she interviewed probably laughed about how obviously try hard she was. I hope they never let her near 6 Music. The DJ's there are knowledgeable and clearly love music but aren't so 'I'm with the band, don't you wish you were me' about it.

LaQueenOfTheSpring Wed 26-Mar-14 20:59:42

Yep squoosh that's what I meant...I think it's to make her look coy and kooky...instead it just makes me want to trim her fringe FFS.

WipsGlitter Wed 26-Mar-14 21:05:38

I once saw photos of her at some big fashion event and she was "spontaneously" barefoot when it was so obviously contrived to make her look winsome.

OTOH she does a lot of great stuff for mencap (her sister has learning difficulties)

SilverShins Wed 26-Mar-14 21:15:24

Oh I do find her so very annoying. She used to sit next to John Peel on the Glastonbury show basically contributing nothing at all. I find her pretty sycophantic.

i must agree i dont like her commentating on glastonbury, down with the bands. but i do like her evening show

ArtexMonkey Wed 26-Mar-14 21:53:29

Oh! When she had that tv show, and she used to sit there cross legged with bare feet. Ffs! And once, she had Jarvis Cocker on, and he was talking about albums he liked, in full flow, and he mentioned Pet Sounds, and she cut across him to go 'yeah, seminal album, yeah' as though it was this truly insightful thing she'd just said, and he gave her this LOOK of total disgust, like she'd just shat in his crimplene jacket, it was beautiful.

Lighthousekeeping Wed 26-Mar-14 21:57:32

I agree she does an awful lot for MENCAP and I know people who have met her in that capacity and say she's brilliant.

HowLongIsTooLong Wed 26-Mar-14 22:10:15

For those of you who haven't seen it, this:

shows just how obnoxious JW is. Glad Lily Allen stuck up for herself!

NomDePrune Wed 26-Mar-14 22:43:00

Once she was interviewing Paolo Nutini before he did a live show and she asked him the meaning of his song 'Pencil Full of Lead". He thought she was having a laugh and just sort of giggled but she genuinely didn't get it and made him explain. God it was cringeworthy.
Also I remember Bill Bailey on Buzzcocks referring to the Jo Whiley High Hat -the sharp intake of breath between the teeth. Obviously grates on him too!

jonicomelately Thu 27-Mar-14 08:50:19

The velour tracksuit with embroided initials sounds hilarious. Either she has a brilliant sense of humour or she's completely lost in showbiz.

Kudzugirl Thu 27-Mar-14 08:59:26

There was another DJ who wore a tracksuit with their initials on. That didn't end so well.

flipchart Thu 27-Mar-14 12:04:11

I guess i would put the Wiley/Allen down to a clash of personalities. They clearly don't like each other on that clip.

Nobody is ever going to like everyone. Doesn't mean you are a bad person.

Maybe the track suit was a promo gift. Who knows? Easy to make assumptions.

Mintyy Thu 27-Mar-14 12:07:48

She gets slightly on ma tits but then I always think to myself well it could be worse she could be Janice Long omg!

giveadogabonio Thu 27-Mar-14 18:56:17

Haha, I remember her show. Just googled it

late 1990s-tastic!

The hair! Do you remember that hair style? And trainers with a skirt? It all seemed to make sense back then confused

flipchart Thu 27-Mar-14 23:06:06

I had my hair in a bonkers style like that ( and skirts with trainers.... I looked fab honest!)

PerpendicularVince Thu 27-Mar-14 23:15:39

DH and I find her immensely irritating. She name drops constantly, stuff like 'last night I was at Mike's house. That's Michael Stipe you know'.

She also has crap phone ins, I've thought she was rubbish ever since she did one about flip flops. Really, who gives a shit what Bob from Manchester wears on his feet?

And <continues rant> when Prison Break was on, someone texted in asking the RL names of the characters in Prison Break. Cue 'The names are X and Y, remember you heard them here first on the JO WHILEY show. Yes, the JO WHILEY show'.

My problems with this are a) Use google, don't encourage her inane ramblings and b) Most people won't have heard this first on the JO WHILEY show.

squoosh Thu 27-Mar-14 23:18:39

That programme is cringetastic although she hasn't changed much has she?

ZenNudist Thu 27-Mar-14 23:28:49

Loving the JW hatred. I've hated her since c1995 when she did the evening sessions with Steve Lamaque. Loved the show/ the music, hated the presenters (admits to blatant jealousy).

She's always seemed fairly inoffensive since then, sort of bland and unremarkable.

I've realised I don't like many djs anyway. Sara Cox is great, don't mind Fearne cotton wittering on, don't like that newer female R1 DJ. The blokes are awful. Scott mills, Greg whatsisface and morning ponceyboy who loves himself are the best of it. That huw guy and the Matt edmundson require me to turn over ASAP.

I flick between R1 & xfm when I'm not playing my own music.

flipchart Thu 27-Mar-14 23:34:39

I like most of the DH's on radio 1 and 2 except for Steve Wright.

However I mostly listen to Planet Rock. I love wyatt, Darren Reddick , Paul Anthony etc etc. best radio station EVER!

bionic77 Thu 27-Mar-14 23:39:35

I sat next to her in a cafe not so long ago. She was talking to someone who was either her agent or producer and boy was she whining. She seemed quite needy. I think she was moaning about how much work she wasn't getting or something.

I've never been that keen on her so made a point of not acknowledging I recognised her. Bet that showed her!
