Am I being stupid to wonder where people keep all their shoes?

Aibu to think that shoe storage is an actual problem?

I don't think I've got an excessive amount of shoes, but there definitely isn't space in the bottom of the wardrobe, there isn't a single shoe rack big enough, and where do you put shoe racks anyway? In a cupboard? Haven't got the space.

Have most people got a proper place for their shoes, or are everyone else shoved here and there around the house like mine?

Wardrobe in the spare room wink

shakinstevenslovechild Sun 16-Feb-14 20:07:59

I have mine in their boxes stacked in piles everywhere a corner of my room, and some that I don't really wear anymore bubble wrapped and boxed up in the attic and in the cupboard under the stairs. I wouldn't have my shoes in shoe racks, they would get all dusty and bashed. I imagine most people don't have one particular place for their shoes and they just end up everywhere like mine.

Springcleanish Sun 16-Feb-14 20:08:34

In a giant shoe mountain in the porch. Not ideal, but not in the house so I try to ignore it as much as possible.

nickelbabe Sun 16-Feb-14 20:08:45

here and there in our house too.

there are bigger storage worries in our house hmmshock

I've got five of those slidy plastic crates on wheels under the bed, and three more in the bottom of the built in wardrobe, and I keep out of season shoes (ie sandals etc in winter, Uggs etc in Summer) in the loft.

And I don't even consider myself to be someone with a lot of shoes.

Happiestinwellybobs Sun 16-Feb-14 20:12:17

All in a wardrobe in the spare room - in clear shoe boxes stacked up smile I don't think I have that many really although DH would disagree.

PinkyHasNoEars Sun 16-Feb-14 20:14:13

I do have a lot.

In boxes...in the wardrobe. Stacked seasonally (I kid you not).

The creeping menace.

ILoveWooly Sun 16-Feb-14 20:17:08

My winter shoes are currently stacked in bokes at the bottom of my wardrobe alongside my all year round classics... my spring/summer/autumn shoes are in their boxes in the hall cupboard.

I really do love my shoes!

Dollslikeyouandme Sun 16-Feb-14 20:20:50

I don't have a spare room perhaps that's where I'm going wrong.

I currently have all my sandals in an under the bed storage tub, smart shoes stacked at the side of the wardrobe, and current season boots lined up under the stairs, they're all driving me mad, I want somewhere proper where I can put my shoes away and select which pair I want.

Do people have lots of those individual shoe boxes then? A huge under the bed box with individual compartments would be good actually.

ShabbyChic8 Sun 16-Feb-14 20:24:06

We keep seasonal shoes in plastic tubs in the garage when not in use. We have a shoe storage cupboard in our hallway which just about houses all our shoes. In theory we have a one in one out policy too, so every new pair we buy we charity or chuck a pair we no longer wear, doesn't always work though.

Dollslikeyouandme Sun 16-Feb-14 20:25:00

The bottom of my wardrobe has baskets with socks/underwear (drawers are full with other clothes, make up, hairdryer and straighteners, kindle, phone charger etc). The other side has all my bags.

Hall cupboard is full with hoover, mop bucket, ironing board.

Mrswellyboot Sun 16-Feb-14 20:25:56

Same issue here. Occasion shoes to go with wedding outfits are in the spare room ( plus summer sandles )on a shelf in wardrobe

Everyday shoes on a small rack in wardrobe

Other types (weekend stuff) in an underbed plastic box.

Farrowandbawl Sun 16-Feb-14 20:26:18

In a shoe cupboard thing for the ones we wear all the time.

Bottom of wardrobes in shoe boxes for the ones we don't wear as often.

Welly boots are in the meter cupboard.

Under the stairs. Got these clip together things that let you arrange to fit the space.

Amy106 Sun 16-Feb-14 20:27:47

In the wardrobe, in the hall closet, under the stairs...maybe I need to sort out my shoe collection! smile

sydlexic Sun 16-Feb-14 20:28:15

I have a built in shoe closet. Built by DH, it's his best talent building things.

Sunflower49 Sun 16-Feb-14 20:28:59

Same issue here!DP has a vast amount of boots. They're all in an untidy pile at the bottom of the stairs. Drives me **ing nuts.Couple of mine there too-my 'nice' shoes at bottom of the walk in wardrobe (we have a sort of 'bunk' bed with my clothes on a clothes rail underneath, to save space).

PinkyHasNoEars Sun 16-Feb-14 20:30:08

<Swooning with envy over thought of ^shoe closet^>

ShoeWhore Sun 16-Feb-14 20:30:38

I have a hanging shoe store in the wardrobe for mine.
Boots lined up neatly underneath.

Dcs have a basket near the front door.
There's also a communal basket tucked away for wellies football boots and walking boots.

How many shoes do you have? Do you actually wear them all?

Dollslikeyouandme Sun 16-Feb-14 20:31:42

I am green with envy at the shoe closet, I can just see me sliding open the door to all my shoes in neat little compartments.

VideoEtTaceo Sun 16-Feb-14 20:32:41

We go out of the house via the garage, and keep all our shoes in there on (enormous) shelves. It does mean the shoes are freezing when you first put them on!

shakinstevenslovechild Sun 16-Feb-14 20:32:46

A built in shoe closet envy envy envy

PrincessOfChina Sun 16-Feb-14 20:33:19

Ours are all over. They often get tidied into the wardrobe and under the bed in slidy boxes but then they creep out and end up under the radiator in the dining room.

We had a big lunch today, and DH popped 19 pairs from there into an Ikea bag and slung them in the cupboard. Not ideal!

Preciousbane Sun 16-Feb-14 20:34:10

I had to sell all my beautiful heels when my back became so dreadful I just couldn't wear them anymore. I kept two pairs that I couldn't bear to part with and I just gaze at my satin LK Bennett's and think I could wear you but then I wouldn't be able to walk for a couple of days.

The very dull and sensible shoes that I now own are all kept in my shoe cupboard looking all boring and worthy, the bastards.

gamerchick Sun 16-Feb-14 20:36:06

i have 2 pair of shoes.. one pair of trainers and one pair of boots.

They fulfill all my needs.

How many pairs of shoes does a person need ffs? hmm

Salmotrutta Sun 16-Feb-14 20:36:45

Oh yes!

A shoe closet sounds just like those scenes in films where posh folk have massive walk in closets and everything has little cubicles and drawers and stuff.

And there are huge long rails with outfits ordered by type/colour etc. envy

Wish my house was bigger - I'd love on of those then I'd probably fill it up with crap

MrsDavidBowie Sun 16-Feb-14 20:38:07

A shoe closet. envy
You lucky lady.

Mine are in boxes in a wardrobe apart from wet weather boots which are in the utility.

( goes off muttering about shoe closets)

Salmotrutta Sun 16-Feb-14 20:38:19

My shoes are sprawled all over the house... Wardrobe, spare room, under the bed blush

Dollslikeyouandme Sun 16-Feb-14 20:38:52

I have probably

7 pairs of boots
2x converse
1x running trainers
1x walking boots
1x wellies
4 pairs of smart heeled shoes
5-6 sandals/wedges
Flip flops
2 x ballet pumps

That's just ones I wear, I've got a few that do probably need getting rid of now.

DustyBaubles Sun 16-Feb-14 20:39:18

Wellies/snow boots near the door.

School/work shoes on the stairs.

The rest are on a shoe rack in the hall, doubled up to fit them all in.

Dollslikeyouandme Sun 16-Feb-14 20:45:25

None of my shoes are fancy/expensive designer/high heels but just a mixture of different colour boots, ankle and mid calf plus warm boots. Ones I need for walking/running and different coloured sandals.

My shoes last me years so I collect them.

DipMeInChocolate Sun 16-Feb-14 20:45:27

I have shoe storage in my walk in wardrobe, only just utilised as the were in a mountain in the dark under stairs cupboard. Summer shoes, boots and going out shoes stored in a box in said wardrobe. i use the ikea skubb boxes. DH has his in an over door rack in the garage.

BakerStreetSaxRift Sun 16-Feb-14 20:45:42

I have loads of shoes, probably pushing one hundred pairs.

I bought a large Ikea bookcase and streaked all the sore boxes into it. Can get about 10+ boxes per shelf if you get the geometry correct.

I think it's a genius system smile

BocaDeTrucha Sun 16-Feb-14 20:48:15

Shoes we wear regularly go in ikea show cupboards in the hall, the rest are in built - in shoe racks in the cupboard in the basement.

Naoko Sun 16-Feb-14 20:55:08

Ours are on the shoe rack by the door, but DP and I only have 5 pairs of shoes between us, so I don't think we're really the target audience of your question grin

Bodicea Sun 16-Feb-14 20:59:07

Two drawers of going out type shoes in wardrobe - just chucked in. I don't keep boxes as take up too much space and too time consuming to put in a box or on a rack. Out of season shoes in a big box in spare room. Current shoes in drawers under the stairs. A few forgotten about pairs at back of big cupboard under stairs behind vacuum and mop bucket. Really must sort them out!

I have wellies downstairs. And my other four pairs in my room under the fireplace. Sometimes when there's bad weather (February, looking at you) I wake up and there's ash all over them.

I just don't get the attraction to shoe closets? and have we got this American?

ItsWarmerInTheSouth Sun 16-Feb-14 21:31:18

Stuffed into the cupboard under the stairs. Every time we open it, everything falls out... we call it a shoe-nami. wink

shewhowines Sun 16-Feb-14 21:42:57

Some in the shoe cupboard in the hallway, one regularly used pair each kids flout this rule in a basket next to the shoe cupboard.

Some on an over door rack in the garage. Boots on shelf in garage. Out of season pairs in the garage. Wellies and walking boots in the garage.

A couple of good pair in the bottom of the wardrobe.

There are 4 of us in the house. I wouldn't even say that we have many shoes each, but they seem to be stuffed everywhere.

CorusKate Sun 16-Feb-14 21:52:05

I have the cupboard of doom, especially built for all the shoes and coats. There's 3 kids worth and 1 adults worth of winter and summer shoes and coats in there.

EarlGreyCuppa Sun 16-Feb-14 21:55:32

My database of shoes tells me that I have 72 blush pairs of shoes inc. boots (but not wellies, trainers and flip flops etc.)

Unfortunately I have no built-in shoe closet or walk-in wardrobe... Next life maybe...

Most of my shoes are kept in their boxes at the bottom of my wardrobe, they take up more than half the wardrobe. Boots are kept in boxes under the bed. Shoes I am currently wearing regularly live on shelves in the cupboard under the stairs. Kids and hubby keep their paltry collection of shoes in another (smaller) under-stairs cupboard.

Shoes on shoe rack adapted from Ikea unit designed for holding boxes of kids toys. Flipflops/Birkies in a drawer pending summer. Boots in the bottom of the wardrobe and in a few boxes. But I have loads of shoes and several pairs of boots, they seem to last for ages.

DS3 has a wicker basket for shoes ( school shoes, trainers, crocs and converse) in his room. DS1 & 2 only have 2 pairs each now they're not at school, so theirs go wherever they chucked them last. DH has a wooden box with a lid for ones he hardly ever wears, but lives in 2 pairs which also go wherever he took them off.
Also have separate plastic boxes in hall for wellies on a shelf so high I can't reach it ( need to change that!)

Oldraver Sun 16-Feb-14 22:21:26

We have a hall cupboard, not big just a door width, where we store that seasons coats and shoes. Spare shoes are kept boxed in the wardrobe

WitchWay Sun 16-Feb-14 22:24:36

Smart ones in their boxes in the bottom of the guest-room wardrobe. All the rest tumbled into the bottom of my main wardrobe. The bedroom light is really crap & I hate having to rummage around groping for shoes once they've become a bit jumbled up.

Pipbin Sun 16-Feb-14 22:29:05

Although we don't have a huge amount of shoes, shoe storage was one of my criteria when looking at houses. One of the reasons I liked the house we now have is that it had two understairs cupboards. So I have one just for shoes. They are mainly all DH's!

LustyBusty Sun 16-Feb-14 22:34:29

I have one of these but double the size. Flats (flip flops, sandals and ballet pumps) and trainers go in one side, heels go in the other. I think I have about 40pairs all together including one particular pair of courts in black, nude, purple and petrol walking boots and wellies under the stairs and off season winter boots under the bed. Also, a couple of pairs (generally one pair flat and one heel) each by front and back door where I kick them off either when I come in or when I get up from sofa.

Aelfrith Sun 16-Feb-14 22:37:04

Currently being worn shoes are on a rack by the front door. Might be worn shoes are in wicker basket in bedroom. Definitely not being worn shoes (sandals, snow boots, ballet shoes, tap shoes, posh shoes for going out) are under the bed in a plastic box. Welles are by the back door in a big crate. Crocs are by the kitchen door for going out to the washing line and wood shed.

cosikitty Sun 16-Feb-14 22:46:13

I have converted an old built in airing cupboard in my bedroom into a shoe cupboard. I removed the original shelves and filled it with stackable shoe racks. I have about 35 pairs. Those I wear every day like work shoes are kept in the hall cupboard.

MistressDeeCee Mon 17-Feb-14 00:25:55

I have loads of shoes. Some are on a rack in corner of my room. Recently went to Poundstretchers & bought several 'pop up ' canvas clothes storage hampers. Theyre round shaped and have a lid so you cant see whats in them, £2.99 each, and you can colour co-ordinate them with your room. Ive transferred all my shoes into them still in boxes/wrapped. Its nice as theyre out of the way. Much tidier, and I was fed up of tripping over shoes

Ericaequites Mon 17-Feb-14 00:34:23

My ex sister in law had a shoe closet bigger than most dorm rooms with over 500 pairs of shoes. She spent thirteen years in school uniform, so don't worry that school uniforms mean girls don't develop taste...

invicta Mon 17-Feb-14 00:38:44

On a shoe rack in down stairs toilet. Sumner shoes are in plastic tub on shelf in wardrobe.

We have a five foot bookshelf in the hall with all 'currently worn' shoes in it.
Their are 6 of us and sometimes 8
The rest of MY shoes are in crate sized boxes in my wardrobes. The kids the same, just no crates.

Topaz25 Mon 17-Feb-14 00:53:00

I have an under bed storage thingy. I don't have that many pairs of shoes really (after a recent purge of ones that were worn out, damaged or didn't fit well) about 3 pairs of heels, 3 pairs of flats and 2 pairs of trainers (one pair for outside and one for the gym).

EatShitDerek Mon 17-Feb-14 00:57:21

Limed up around rooms.

I have mime and sons shoes lined up under windowsill in living room as its just an empty space.

I have more lined up in my room and his room.

afterthought Mon 17-Feb-14 07:51:47

I have a ridiculous amount of shoes and the storage of them (along with my coat and bag collection) is a real problem. I'm not even that into fashion, they are mostly hiking style shoes, coats and bags. At the moment the coats are stored at the top of my wardrobe. Bags and shoes are packed into boxes in the spare room until we have some storage built. Goodness knows where they will go if our family grows ...

wonkylegs Mon 17-Feb-14 08:00:43

We have footwear all over the place. My main bugbear is DHs shoes which he abandons all over the place and at a size 12 they are a serious trip hazard.

lastnightIwenttoManderley Mon 17-Feb-14 08:03:09

Just two of us in our house and under stairs cupboard has full height shelves for shoes - i like to see them!

I've probably got about 25 pairs in all, inc work heels, evening shoes, walking boots, flats etc. Try and keep it as lean as possible - i have size 2 feet so the shoes i do have tend to be on the pricey side which helps regulate the numbers.

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea Mon 17-Feb-14 08:15:05

DH has just built me a shoe rack to fit into my built in wardrobe. It's in the garage waiting to be painted. I think my paltry 15-20 pair collection will all fit into it. They are all in clear boxes from Lakeland.

I will post a picture if I can.

envy At the online database though. I want.

EarlGreyCuppa Mon 17-Feb-14 09:01:30

CorusKate I use an app on my phone called Memento Database, slightly customised so that I can have thumbnail pictures of my shoes, categorised by colour, brand etc. grin I'm sure you could use it to store various info but..

For my books, I use an app called Book Catalogue. It enables you to scan barcodes to enter the book's details.

Both apps are free on android.

LydiasLunch Mon 17-Feb-14 09:07:05

We have one of those big ikea wicker lidded hampers in the hall and all the shoes get thrown in there. I'm not a shoe person though. I have snow boots and plain black boots for winter, Clark's men's sandals for summer and some flat black things. I like coats though smile

MrsBucketxx Mon 17-Feb-14 09:07:43

I ave a shoe rack in the downstairs loo, and a shoe wheel for the rest it lives in the wardrobe. I have lots

HerGraciousMajTheBeardedPotato Mon 17-Feb-14 09:10:04

When we installed our ikea Pax wardrobes, we had space to fit them forward of the wall. So we cut away most of the back panel and attached Ikea bookcases to the back of the wardrobes before pushing the whole 'unit' up against the wall.

When we push the hanging clothes to one side we have almost floor-to-ceiling shelf space. Mine is occupied mostly by shoes. Dh's is about 1/4 shoes. The rest is bed linen and spare space.

And we have a shoe rack by the front door for all the day-to-day shoes. Plus a load of hiking boots o the floor of another wardrobe.

londonrach Mon 17-Feb-14 09:11:21

In the cupboard on shelves beneath the coats. I have smart work shoes, trainers x2 (one almost too wore out and will be thrown, the other is the new one), 2x boots (black and brown), 1 x long black boot, walking boots, 1 x summer shoe and 1 x slippers. Wish my clothes were so organised..... Thats more of a storage problem as we rent and apart from the hall cupboard dont have any others....
