to think David Starkey is an utter ****

Anyone else watching Question Time? His utter, utter contempt for tube workers and the audience has pushed me from being slightly anti-striker to competely pro because of his horribly entitled and offensive responses. He can't even name Bob Crow correctly (called him Bill). Now I hate Bob Crow as much as the next person and am as grumpy as the next London commuter about the strike (OK, a bit less as I live in South London).... but the Mayor has refused to even meet the Union for five years, so I can see that there might be legitimate unheard grievances. This shower of ignorance just appears to be ignoring all of it and throwing petrol on the fire...

MardyBra Thu 06-Feb-14 23:27:15

What does mean?

He is a knob!!

But big arf at DDim saying PMQs is macho!!

MardyBra Thu 06-Feb-14 23:29:45

Sorry. Posting error. What does mean?

MardyBra Thu 06-Feb-14 23:30:06

OK why won't MN let me post four *s

MardyBra Thu 06-Feb-14 23:30:26

It's just easier to type cunt really.

DonnaDishwater Thu 06-Feb-14 23:30:40

Tube workers are stuck in the 1970s I'm afraid.

MardyBra Thu 06-Feb-14 23:30:59

Disclaimer: I didn't even watch Question Time.

Ooooh! New blank post!

He is still a knob though!

And how rude was he to that girl in the audience. Since when has personal abuse been part of adult debate.

lessonsintightropes Thu 06-Feb-14 23:32:10

Sorry, this is probably unintelligible for anyone not watching.

In brief, there was a balanced discussion about the rights of tube workers to strike, the issue they were striking over, and the relationship between the head of the RMT union in charge of the strike - Bob Crow - and the London mayor, Boris Johnson, who haven't met face to face for five years despite on average 7 strikes a year.

This man, a historian, came in with a bunch of inflammatory and ill advised comments accusing the striking workers of all manner of things, questioning their right to strike, and giving out abusive comment to audience members of Question Time who dared to agree with them and disagree with him.

I dislike him intensely after watching this session and think he has no idea about daily life for most people and given he's hardly reliant on public transport has no room to comment on either the strikers or London Joe Public who dare to support them.

I am pushed into this position despite thinking the tube badly needs modernising and that the workforce is a bit obstructive and generally reasonably well paid.

AnyaKnowIt Thu 06-Feb-14 23:34:44

Didn't see that far, turned off when he started about different types of rape. The thick bastard

KissesBreakingWave Thu 06-Feb-14 23:34:54

I know a few folks that were taught by him twenty years or so ago. They all thought calling him a despicabe misogynist cunt was a profound slur on the despicable misogynist cunt community.

lessonsintightropes Thu 06-Feb-14 23:35:37

And yes, MardyBra, it could be cunt, knob, twat, arse, shit etc etc. Just trying to be less offensive than the individual ;)

HenriettaMaria Thu 06-Feb-14 23:35:59

He isn't just contemptuous of tube workers though, is he? He has utter contempt for anyone who isn't him, basically.

Can't stand the fucker, frankly.

lessonsintightropes Thu 06-Feb-14 23:36:00

KissesBreakingWave love it!

HenriettaMaria Thu 06-Feb-14 23:37:36

They all thought calling him a despicabe misogynist cunt was a profound slur on the despicable misogynist cunt community. grin grin

MorrisZapp Thu 06-Feb-14 23:38:31

I never got that far. His confusion about what rape means was enough to get to to turn his fucking ugly mug off.

lessonsintightropes Thu 06-Feb-14 23:45:39

I only switched on at 11.15 and was offended within the first three minutes, can only imagine his comments on a more sensitive and painful topic like rape would have switched me off beforehand.

Is he really just a better educated Katie Hopkins with a penis and more wrinkles?

Janorisa Thu 06-Feb-14 23:48:16

Viviennemary Thu 06-Feb-14 23:51:28

Question Time has been dreadful for quite a number of weeks now. I had to stop watching. They should have a more balanced panel. That is not more than one complete

Bourdic Thu 06-Feb-14 23:54:01

I actually really seriously thought that Starkey was either drunk or showing signs of mental illness tonight

WildThong Thu 06-Feb-14 23:58:44

QT was well balanced tonight, two cnuts, Galloway was there too, odious slimy creep.

Misspixietrix Fri 07-Feb-14 07:26:46

I'm still trying to work out the Women and Left handed comments confused.

HoratiaDrelincourt Fri 07-Feb-14 07:34:16

I've had dinner with him. He's vile.

DoctorDonnaNoble Fri 07-Feb-14 07:34:42

He's an odd one. Totally obsessed with Elizabeth I.

Ilovexmastime Fri 07-Feb-14 07:39:29

I only caught the last few minutes of QT and he still managed to make me angry, he was talking about women in politics I gather.

bodygoingsouth Fri 07-Feb-14 07:45:00

he's a very very silly man as is George Galloway. both are self obsessed ignorant bores who unfortunately for them are nowhere near as clever or witty as they would like to be.

I thought Starky was drunk actually.

it must be a dreadful life to be so full if contempt and distain for others, both are sad lonely little blokes. pathetic really.

Misspixietrix Fri 07-Feb-14 07:48:49

Horatio you poor soul sad

Pollydon Fri 07-Feb-14 07:52:10

Starkey is a vile, nast twat. Had to turn over , he gives me the rage. Its unbelievable that they still give him airtime on the bbc.

dollius Fri 07-Feb-14 08:05:16

I thought he was a nasty twat just by reading his book about Henry's six wives. Mysoginistic crap.

HoratiaDrelincourt Fri 07-Feb-14 09:38:32

I'm fairly confident he neither understands nor likes Women, tbh.

Preciousbane Fri 07-Feb-14 09:39:25

He always speaks down to any audience and I can't bear to watch anything he presents.

ScentedScandal Fri 07-Feb-14 09:45:45

Remember when Starkey was on that programme when Jamie Oliver bunged a load of slebs in a school to teach teenagers?confused

Horatia - did you stan him with your fork?

Stan him?

Stab him you silly fat fingers!!

senua Fri 07-Feb-14 09:52:38

All celebrities have to have a USP. I believe that Starkey's USP is to be "the rudest man in Britain". So he has to be vile etc to keep up his position on the League Table of Insufferableness.
It's such an act and so yawnsome. I usually switch off when he hoves into view.

Juliaparker25 Fri 07-Feb-14 09:59:28

Dave has an innate ability to wind up all the yoghourt knitters in range of him , he has been doing it quite successfully for 30 years. As you can see from his wiki bio he is no dummy.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Starkey

KissesBreakingWave Fri 07-Feb-14 10:42:04

All that says is that yoghurt-knitters have some basic standards of human decency. I've no more respect for the lentil-weaving pinks than the cowards and traitors of the conservative end of the spectrum, but at least they don't see the likes of Starkey as worth the spit to insult him with. Useful man on the primary sources, but hasn't the brains of a potted ficus plant when it comes to figuring out human motivation.

DorisAllTheDay Fri 07-Feb-14 10:46:39

I thought he was rude and obnoxious, and I've written to the BBC to ask that he's not invited again. He talked over everyone else, and when a woman from the audience struggled a bit for words he made fun of her. That's not on. I don't expect to agree with everything said by the QT panel, and some views are in my opinion rather obnoxious, but so long as they debate them with a basic level of respect for other panelists and the audience I think that's fair enough. Starkey doesn't do that. He should not be asked to participate again.

squoosh Fri 07-Feb-14 11:02:46

'I know a few folks that were taught by him twenty years or so ago. They all thought calling him a despicabe misogynist cunt was a profound slur on the despicable misogynist cunt community.'

Brilliant! grin

HavantGuard Fri 07-Feb-14 11:02:48

'They all thought calling him a despicabe misogynist cunt was a profound slur on the despicable misogynist cunt community. '

That's the most apt description of him I've seen.

squoosh Fri 07-Feb-14 11:09:33

I could only watch five minutes, I would have watched more but yesterday's rage levels were already perilously high.

He's an utter cunt. Remember when he said in reference to the London riots "What has happened is that a substantial section of the chavs that you wrote about have become black."

Or this gem

"Listen to David Lammy, an archetypal successful black man. If you turn the screen off so that you are listening to him on radio you would think he was white."

Osmiornica Fri 07-Feb-14 11:10:52

At one point he said something about 'behaving like adults' in response to one of the women in the audience which is ironic considering he behaved like a petulant child through it (albeit an incredibly rude and obnoxious child).

When can we start having a proper sensible civilised debate between politicians in this country? Parliament is hardly any better.

gotthemoononastick Fri 07-Feb-14 11:11:30

Brainpower is THE aphrodisiac..... so erudite! He is hot!

DoctorQuinn Fri 07-Feb-14 11:11:35

David Starkey is a wonderfully entertaining man when he's annoyed about something. Not only that but he talks a lot of sense.

The same is true of George Galloway.

Both are national treasures.

ginmakesitallok Fri 07-Feb-14 11:15:07

God it must have been bad, even the school lollipop man was talking about it this am. Wish I'd seen it

DoctorQuinn

National Treasures - As in should be buried in a large hole with only a vague pirate map to find them wink

stopprocrastinating Fri 07-Feb-14 11:46:51

YANBU

flippinada Fri 07-Feb-14 11:53:45

David Starkey is a deeply unpleasant individual and always has been.

He was around being obnoxious when I was doing A-Levels more than 20 years ago and hasn't improved inbetween times.

senua Fri 07-Feb-14 11:54:56

Wish I'd seen it

As said above, he is a toddler saying PooBumWilly in the hope that someone will react. Please don't fall for it.

flippinada Fri 07-Feb-14 11:55:57

I should make it clear that I mean history level. I didn't ^ choose^ to read his turgid nonsense.

flippinada Fri 07-Feb-14 11:56:45

Ahem. History A level smile .

DoctorQuinn do you really think Galloway and Starkey are national treasures?

VoldysGoneMouldy Fri 07-Feb-14 12:27:04

I remember him being interviewed on the radio a few years ago, can't remember exactly what it was about, but some issue surrounding women. I was slack jawed with horror within moments, having only seen his Tudor series before that.

Seixst racist prick. And, I imagine, adores Elizabeth I to the point that if you even dared suggest the possibility that she HAD slept with Robert Duddley to him, he would spontaneously combust. Do suspect The Virgin Queen is about the only woman he likes in any way.

Cuntbadger.

IrishBloodEnglishHeart Fri 07-Feb-14 12:50:11

Starkey is not a national treasure, not in my treasure trove anyway, he is an irritating cliche.

HoratiaDrelincourt Fri 07-Feb-14 12:51:25

I did not stab him with anything.

He got his first telly job on the basis of being controversial and quirky-looking. He was put forward for it by a former student working in telly.

In other words, they aren't hiring him for his history, any more than they hire Hatie Kopkins for her business experience. They get air time because they generate debate.

The tellyists don't give a shit if we agree or not, so long as we talk about it.

squoosh Fri 07-Feb-14 12:57:18

Happy to see he doesn't have his documentary gig on Channel 4 anymore. Maybe that's what's made the poor diddums so angry.

dinster Fri 07-Feb-14 13:10:30

On 5Live afterwards, Stephen Nolan remarked on what a good edition QT had been because it was so lively. It's as though the programme makers think anything where people get het up is a sign of quality broadcasting, never mind that the standard of debate was just woeful. I actually feel quite upset at how bad it was - there are so many clever, thoughtful, well-informed people we could hear from, why do they have to book ignorant, insulting, self-promoters?

HenriettaMaria Fri 07-Feb-14 13:57:21

I think he just plays a caricature of Moral Maze persona these days, really.

I can't really judge him as a Tudor historian as I've only seen him on telly and haven't read any of his research; but, outside of his own historical era, he is just as 'partial, prejudiced and ignorant' as any other lay person, IME.

I could sort of tolerate his wrongheaded political opinions if he didn't shower everyone else, especially women, with such contempt.

And if he learned a few basic manners.

HenriettaMaria Fri 07-Feb-14 14:03:18

Oh, sod it.

That should read 'his Moral Maze persona' and: 'his own specialist historical era'. blush

I wasn't trying to imply that he's a dinosaur or out of touch or anything.

There again...

TunipTheUnconquerable Fri 07-Feb-14 14:06:55

He's surprisingly good on Katherine Howard.

Nucky Fri 07-Feb-14 14:07:20

He's a horrible man. He said some astonishingly racist things back during the London riots even quoting the Enoch Powell's 'Rivers of Blood' speech on Newsnight.
