Money-Supermarket Porn Outrage

Is it just me or is anyone else a little angry angry with Money-Supermarket for using the presenter of a Hardcore porn movie - Snoop Dogg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snoop_Dogg%27s_Doggystyle) & massive sexist in their TV adverts.

What message does it send to children when a family brand like Money-Supermarket endorses people involved with a predatory industry that is already too much a part of mainstream culture.

I'm ashamed to say it (mainly as I sound like my mum), but I for one will not be using them from now on!

GhostsInSnow Tue 04-Feb-14 11:42:30

Sorry, not in the least bit outraged.

WaffilyVersatile Tue 04-Feb-14 11:43:31

Jim Davidson just won a popularity contest.. nobody cares

mollypup Tue 04-Feb-14 11:45:58

biscuit

CoffeeTea103 Tue 04-Feb-14 11:46:16

Oh please get over it! As pp said not in the least bit outraged.

DustyBaubles Tue 04-Feb-14 11:47:22

I think you'd be a long time waiting it you wanted everyone in adverts to be beyond reproach.

I wouldn't recognise Snoop Doggy Dog if he jumped up and bit me, and I only take notice of ads if they are irritating.

That ice skater advertising yoghurt for example, why does she pull a face that suggests it tastes like vomit? confused

tracypenisbeaker Tue 04-Feb-14 11:48:02

Sorry, im not really bothered either. Didnt know that Snoop Dogg presents porn though

dickiedavisthunderthighs Tue 04-Feb-14 11:49:32

MoneySupermarket aren't a 'family brand', they're a price comparison website. Most children wouldn't have a clue who Snoop Dogg is, their parents would - who are the demographic for this ad.
Iggy Pop has sold car insurance, Johnny Rotten has sold butter; I don't think they'll be corrupting the nation's children any time soon....

GhostsInSnow Tue 04-Feb-14 11:52:12

tracey he did a webshow once, there is a cracking video online somewhere where he interviewed some of the cast of Sons of Anarchy and after every break they had the lot of them were more and more stoned. I've always found snoop likeable, he's no role model but I don't think he's ever professed to be.

Iggy Pop advertised insurance, he was a huge drug addict back in the day.

blahblahblah2014 Tue 04-Feb-14 11:52:46

haha love it when someone has a moan about something really trivial and noone gives a shit =)

clarksonforPM Tue 04-Feb-14 11:54:17

blimey ! - A lot of very precious people on this website.

I really do wonder how a lot of you make it through the week.

PublicEnemyNumeroUno Tue 04-Feb-14 11:55:27

Hardcore porn presenter?

Family brand?

Huh?

SSWise Tue 04-Feb-14 11:57:56

Fair enough, I see the consensus. My daughter (15) knew he made that Porn vid (she told me) - I think they are exposed to this sort of thing far more than us and we probably don't know enough to protect then properly. We can plead ignorance, but surely that's just aka "crap parenting"

Iwannalaylikethisforever Tue 04-Feb-14 12:00:09

"What message does it send to children ...."
Will Children know he is?
Really couldn't care less tbh .
I wouldn't know snoop dog anyway.

FloweryFeatureWall Tue 04-Feb-14 12:02:33

I'm more surprised he's done the advert than to find out he's been involved in porn. I think children will come across him far more in music (Katy perry?) than they will a money supermarket advert.

GhostsInSnow Tue 04-Feb-14 12:04:22

My DD is 16, she listens to Motley Crue and idolises Tommy Lee (she's a drummer herself). Does this make me a crap parent then because Tommy made a porn vid with Pammy?

WorraLiberty Tue 04-Feb-14 12:04:50

Meh! It's an advert for a service used by adults

It's not like he's presenting CBeebies

I sure my children will not care what a person in an advert has done before, they might find it amusing, being teenagers if it said at the bottom of the screen ' this person has been involved with porn' how else would they know?

WilsonFrickett Tue 04-Feb-14 12:08:15

I think though you're seeing interconnections where they don't exist.

Snoop made a porn video: OK, I'm anti-porn, so that probably wouldn't make me buy a product he advertises.

But Money Supermarket is far from a family brand so I'm not sure it sends any message to children. It's not like he's presenting on the Disney channel.

It sounds to me like a tragic attempt to make money supermarket edgy. Doomed to failure, just like Iggy and the car insurance.

DipMeInChocolate Tue 04-Feb-14 12:12:23

Funniest OP I've read in a while. Didnt know about the porn vid. But as he's a big pot head and raps about being a P.I.M.P. I've never considered him any kind of role model. I like snoop though.

SSWise Tue 04-Feb-14 12:13:02

I wouldn't call anyone a crap parent (I have enough faults) - we all do what we think is right or our kids.

I think Tommy Lee etc is a bit different as that not mainstream - IMO Tommy Lee wouldn't do a TV ad anyway (probably has more self worth).

MSupermarket is a mainstream/family brand and they've said they are doing this to take on the Meerkat which appeals to kids more than any ad I know - so we know the audience they are going for!

http://www.marketingmagazine.co.uk/article/1229448/moneysupermarket-ready-challenge-tired-meerkat-snoop-dogg-campaign

MsAnatomist Tue 04-Feb-14 22:06:37

UABVVVVVU. OP, this outrage on this subject suggests that if you are logically consistent in what you find right/wrong, you think that men who have worked in the porn industry should never be seen by children outside of work, must hide their success in other endeavours from children's knowledge etc etc. I can understand if you were cross because you were thinking of something he had done that was well known and depraved and illegal, but he hasn't (there's nothing wrong with porn in theory, just when bosses are controlling, money grabbing etc).

VegetariansTasteLikeChicken Tue 04-Feb-14 22:16:19

I'm less concerned by him.. and more concerned that as usual it's a man surrounded by "arm candy" women not wearing much of all.

SinisterBuggyMonth Tue 04-Feb-14 22:32:31

Has anyone seen Johnny Rotten on those butter ads. He said a rude word on telly in the 1970's. Disgraceful!

I quite fancy Snoop Doggy Dog

WelshMaenad Tue 04-Feb-14 23:03:06

I'd be focusing on how your 15 year old knows so much about porn, frankly. Even I didn't know Snoop had 'presented' a porn film, and I'm 33.

How exactly does one present a porn film, anyway?

CatAmongThePigeons Tue 04-Feb-14 23:10:41

I know who Snoop Dogg is, my children don't know who he is, but him being surrounded by women is not on at all, although is/was part of his style.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis Tue 04-Feb-14 23:11:34

Ha ha-what cbeebies show could Snoop present? (my beebies knowledge ended with the Tweenies but Im sure you youngsters could come up with something amusing.)

WelshMaenad Tue 04-Feb-14 23:12:32

Let's Play?

CatAmongThePigeons Tue 04-Feb-14 23:14:37

Rhyme Rocket fo' sho'.

NettleTea Tue 04-Feb-14 23:16:45

I think I'd quite like to see the Snoop doing CBeebies (tho not in the 'doing' sense the OP refers to)

LEMmingaround Tue 04-Feb-14 23:21:00

Snoop dog made porn? Who knew??? See, all that is on my mind now is what it would have been called...

LEMmingaround Tue 04-Feb-14 23:22:28

Id be more upset to learn justin fletcher was once in a film called mr rough and tumble gets it on.

Caitlin17 Tue 04-Feb-14 23:55:30

I know who Snoop Dog is , I haven't the faintest idea what Money Supermarket is.

Custardo Tue 04-Feb-14 23:58:23

snoopy doggy style is my guess at porn film name

I just thought he was a huge druggie

CuttedUpPear Wed 05-Feb-14 00:01:56

OP you might have a more reasoned reception to your thread if you posted in Feminism.
People are more prepared to debate the point there.

Onesleeptillwembley Wed 05-Feb-14 00:13:45

So all those kids would recognise him from a porn film? Honestly? Get a hobby.

themessyapron Wed 05-Feb-14 00:26:11

I too am outraged and have already written to the PM!

Nah, only joking.

I don't get the porn/pimp thing with Snoop. He married his school sweetheart in his early twenties and they have kids and from what I saw on his reality show (don't judge me!) they seem like a nice sweet couple.

I think it's all playing to to the camera really, the pimp and hoe stuff.

And I thought the advert was quite funny! Saw it earlier this evening

SaggyOldClothCatPuss Wed 05-Feb-14 00:37:01

I remember when he first became famous. He was on The Word and they made a huge thing of him being a drug dealer.
TBH that makes me more annoyed than being a porn star.

steff13 Wed 05-Feb-14 00:44:19

I didn't know he had hosted a porn film or what a porn film host is. I DID know that he prefers to go by Snoop Lion now. wink

bunchoffives Wed 05-Feb-14 00:45:16

Well I'm with you OP.

Anyone who makes porn, watches porn or condones porn is an ignorant selfish bastard as far as I am concerned. And the less we see of them and porn the better.

The porn industry not only objectifies and dehumanises people - those participating and viewing - but also exploit the many vulnerable people who are working in that industry. It's disgusting to me, one step away from prostitution, and anything that normalises porn further or encourages it to be accepted as part of mainstream culture particularly in media that children see is just irresponsible and morally bankrupt.

YANNNBU

BobaFetaCheese Wed 05-Feb-14 00:45:54

Has he given up on Snoop Lion? Shame that.

I'll judge him more for Starsky & Hutch that Doggystyle...

Neverending2012 Wed 05-Feb-14 00:57:23

Time to get out more... It's not like this is something that really matters is it...

Takingthemickey Wed 05-Feb-14 13:32:38

Are you sure you have your facts right about Snoop and porn. Your 15 year old daughter saying it does not make it true.

VegetariansTasteLikeChicken Wed 05-Feb-14 13:38:41

Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle is a mixed hardcore pornography and hip-hop music video featuring the music of rapper Snoop Dogg and presented by him. It was released in 2001. It was the first hardcore video ever listed on the Billboard music video sales chart.[1] Because of its huge success, it started a trend where rappers are put into the mainstream of the porn industry by hosting X-rated movies.[2][3] Many films of the genre followed, starring Necro, Mystikal, Too Short,[4] Ice-T and Yukmouth.[5] It also allowed Hustler to expand its boundaries by launching new subsidiaries for their recently formed fashion line and CD label. The scenes were shot at Snoop Dogg's house in Claremont, California. Snoop Dogg himself however, does not appear nude or perform any explicit acts.

GhostsInSnow Wed 05-Feb-14 13:39:02

Taking, yep, its snoop doggs doggystyle wiki link

Waaay back in 2001. I think he's probably moved on a fair bit since then.

mayorquimby Wed 05-Feb-14 13:54:20

Doggystyle remains one of the greatest rap albums released.
Pity his debut album was his only good one.

jojoanna Thu 06-Feb-14 21:12:53

He was a director of a porn film. He was a professional pimp and he is also a certified football coach

MistressDeeCee Fri 07-Feb-14 03:15:24

I quite like fancy Snoop. He's a lean mean machine...

I'd be concerned if he was advertising a product aimed at children but beyond that - no, not really. He's not a youngster himself, is he? So I don't think he'll resonate with children in any way

But for someone who's totally anti-porn I can see that it may be offensive to see him in ads. If all who'd been involved in porn at sometime in their lives were banned from tv tho, I have a mind many would get their marching orders. I doubt that's going to happen anytime soon.

fivefourtime Fri 07-Feb-14 04:30:13

One of the kids in Outnumbered has a dad who directs porn in real life! Let's boycott Outnumbered!!!!! BOYCOTT

fivefourtime Fri 07-Feb-14 04:31:35

It's not quite the same thing. However... I don't see why Moneysupermarket has to demonstrate moral probity of any sort. It's not a secondary school maths teacher or whatnot. It's an insurance website.

jojoanna Fri 07-Feb-14 07:09:39

He's resurrecting his huggy bear role for the ad. I'm not sure he's relevant anymore anyway

hickorychicken Fri 07-Feb-14 07:20:22

Love Snoop grin hes never pretended to be anything he isnt, and hearing his voice on the ad made me look up from MN to see if it was him, so job done in getting people to take notice. Are you actually outraged op? Does it consume you? If so i have serious concerns for you, there is much more important things to worry about than MoneySupermarkets choice of ad stars grin

Grennie Fri 07-Feb-14 10:08:53

I agree with you OP. But nobody cares how badly male celebrities treat women.

hickorychicken Fri 07-Feb-14 11:21:20

Flame me all you like for this but if you are getting involved with somebody like that you know exactly what you are in for.

DoctorQuinn Fri 07-Feb-14 11:24:27

The porn industry may be disreputable and exploitative but it stands on higher moral ground than both the banking industry and the tobacco industry.

Also, I'd rather have the porn-related Snoop Dog round for dinner with my family than the non-porn-related Kerry Katona.

Let's get things in proportion.

FreudiansSlipper Fri 07-Feb-14 11:29:40

I love Snoop

can not understand why people get so worked up about some rap artists, what do you want them make music about a nice happy world were women and men are treated equally, black men and woman are treated equally, about their happy perfect lives living in some sort of stepford wives world

really it is an advert, he is very cool and many admire him and can see beyond the persona, music and videos
