. . . to think 'The Butler' is the best film ever to come out of Hollywood?

I've just seen 'The Butler' and it's absolutely wonderful.

Words can't do it justice so I won't try.

But do see it if you possibly can.

Wibblypiglikesbananas Tue 21-Jan-14 20:30:32

I watched it in the US and people clapped at the end. Now that's high praise!

Suelford Tue 21-Jan-14 20:41:28

Ehh, it was OK.

MrsBW Tue 21-Jan-14 20:42:40

Meh.

I was disappointed with it.

SorrelForbes Tue 21-Jan-14 20:43:52

I enjoyed it but American Hustle is the best film this year so far for me

(I've seen lots of films in the US and clapping at the end is quite usual)

TalisaMaegyr Tue 21-Jan-14 20:44:22

I loved it. Absolutely loved it.

McSmoke Tue 21-Jan-14 20:58:36

Urgh yes the clapping and whooping is cringey IME.

Southeastdweller Tue 21-Jan-14 21:00:50

Over indulgent rubbish. Oprah was crap but I liked the actor who played J.F.K.

expatinscotland Tue 21-Jan-14 21:02:57

Sounds tedious as fuck, like all those big 'dramas'. A vehicle for those involved in it to congratulate themselves on what terrific people they are. Yawn.

lottie82 Tue 21-Jan-14 21:17:10

I saw it, and I did really like it BUT some parts were a bit cheesy...

katese11 Tue 21-Jan-14 21:18:34

I quite liked it, then found out that most of the "true story" was made up. Bit disappointing!

sparklyskyy Tue 21-Jan-14 21:18:43

Gotta be the wolf of wall street! Everything I expected and more from Leo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese.

Still to watch The Butler, love Forrest Whitaker so looking forward to it but have heard the reviews aren't great.

The thing is as long as you enjoyed it, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. I love a good film and it had been too long since I'd had the chance to watch one and the Wolf blew it out the park for me grin

squoosh Tue 21-Jan-14 21:28:31

The Butler is the best Hollywood film ever,...................^EVER^?

YABVU

(although I quite fancy Forest Whitaker)

CarlaVeloso Tue 21-Jan-14 21:32:33

What's Margot Robbie like? I remember her from Neighbours.

Sad that for her to get her Hollywood breakthrough she has to get her clothes off, 'twas ever thus I suppose.

sparklyskyy Tue 21-Jan-14 21:53:13

She was in neighbors?? I really liked her in it. I read the trivia on IMDB after watching it and seemingly she had to have 3 tequila shots in quick succession before her nude seen with Leo DiCaprio grin.

The film is solely about greed, drugs, sex and debauchery so not for everyone (lots of swearing also!) And one particular scene was like wtf?! But hey ho I enjoyed it! grin.

ihatethecold Tue 21-Jan-14 21:55:39

I'm trying to decide what to see tomorrow.
Either 12 years a slave,
Hustle or wolf of wall st,,

I just can't decide

sparklyskyy Tue 21-Jan-14 22:00:48

Wolf! grin

Although think I'll be seeing 12 years tomorrow too.

ihatethecold Tue 21-Jan-14 22:08:45

I am tempted by wolf but, it's 3 hours long!
I will fidget like a 3 year old after 2.

sparklyskyy Tue 21-Jan-14 22:18:34

I thought that 3 hours was a bit much when I heard that but it went in quick! Never looked at my watch once! But it depends if you're ok with films full of sex and drugs. I would recommend to my sister and friends but not my dad grin.

SorrelForbes Wed 22-Jan-14 00:10:56

Wolf is excellent too.

ComposHat Wed 22-Jan-14 00:47:38

I was very disappointed that 'The Butler' wasn't a biopic of Stan Butler from On the buses.

Best Hollywood film ever? Are you off your rocker?

Better than all of the following films:

Casablanca?
Some Like it Hot?
Rear Window?
The Graduate?
Chinatown?
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest?
Midnight Cowboy?
In the Heat of the Night?
The Godfather (1 & 2) ?
The Last Picture Show?

Either:

1) You have appalling taste in film

2) The only other film you have ever seen is The Hangover Part 3.

ComposHat Wed 22-Jan-14 07:12:57

Yes the whooping and clapping at films is pretty standard in the US. They seem to treat cinema going as something akin to pantomime.

YABU.

It's not even the best film to come out of Hollywood this year.

You need to watch more films.

LottieJenkins Wed 22-Jan-14 07:54:27

I was very impressed with it but thought it went on slightly longer than necessary!

curiousgeorgie Wed 22-Jan-14 08:01:09

I think The Wolf Of Wall Street is the best film to come out of this years awards crop...

It's a 3 hour film that feels about 45 minutes and Leonardo Di Caprio is amazing in it.

The Butler was good too, but definitely not the best film ever.

filimou Wed 22-Jan-14 09:18:36

I kind of want to watch it so I can ogle Liev Schreiber.....

cingolimama Wed 22-Jan-14 13:50:03

OP you need to get out more.

bluebirdonmyshoulder Wed 22-Jan-14 14:11:59

I thought it was utter rubbish for the following reasons

1) Forrest Whittaker can't act.

2) no-one got any older except FW until 5 mins from the end when Oprah aged about 20 yrs in 30 seconds

3) Oprah was awful

4) the son took about 14 yrs to get a degree - I know he kept getting arrested but even so - and then at the end seemed to have a child in his sixties

5) sooo cheesy e.g. Little Caroline Kennedy asking him about segregation, all the presidents asking him his advice, completely unbelievable that a dirt poor black family would have a camera etc.

6) the guy who hired him to work at the White House was still in the same job 25 yes later and had not aged at all

7) it wasn't true, just pretended to be.

Sorry but I hated it.

Nancy66 Wed 22-Jan-14 14:39:43

Didn't like it at all.

12 Years A Slave best film I've seen recently.

American Hustle I found very disappointing. Railyway Man is shit. Her is good but too long.

ihatethecold Wed 22-Jan-14 14:52:03

I enjoyed hustle.
Hope to see wolf next week.
