hairband at 42?

I'm 42. I have longish hair. Sometimes I wear a black fabric hairband to keep it off my face. In public.
AIBU? I am worried I look like a complete fanny.
Am I too old for hair bands?

Flisspaps Mon 20-Jan-14 18:54:02

Anyone over 11yo is too old for a hair band. That includes Alice bands.

KareKare Mon 20-Jan-14 18:55:34

Yup, 'fraid so!

CrockedPot Mon 20-Jan-14 18:56:45

Sorry, but Yanbu. I also have long hair and wear one in the house sometimes, but always, always whip it off if someone comes to the door!

CrockedPot Mon 20-Jan-14 18:57:09

I mean YABU, doh!

BillyNotQuiteNoMates Mon 20-Jan-14 18:57:43

Wear whatever you are comfortable in. I'm 42, I have longish hair, I refuse point blank to wear a pony tail, a hat or a skirt above my ankle. I don't wear make-up, jewellery or perfume (or very rarely anyway). I don't drink alcohol etc, etc. Some people probably think I'm odd - I don't give a toss!

ijustwantnicehair Mon 20-Jan-14 18:58:47

Wear whatever you like most people won't notice let alone care!!

LittleBearPad Mon 20-Jan-14 18:59:11

You probably are I'm afraid. Very sloaney and very eighties.

GlitzAndGiggles Mon 20-Jan-14 18:59:51

A woman I work with in her mid 30s scrapes her hair into a side ponytail with lashings of gel it looks ridiculous so no yanbu imo

Iamavapernow Mon 20-Jan-14 18:59:51

What rubbish.

I think hairbands can look gorgeous as part of a good hairstyle at any age. Unfortunately for you it's more of a 'look' rather than 'keeping hair off the face' style I use them for.

jacks365 Mon 20-Jan-14 19:00:45

Yanbu. If someone wants to judge over something so petty then it's their problem. I'm older and I've even been known to plait my hair.

haggiscatcher Mon 20-Jan-14 19:01:06

Yes I thought so. Though IMHO Alice bands are even worse. I'd NEVER wear one of them. grin

Kaekae Mon 20-Jan-14 19:02:00

i wouldn't, I think it looks dated I'm afraid.

Splodges Mon 20-Jan-14 19:07:28

Er, no, you're not too old for a hairband. You are far too old to care what opinions other people have about your hair though. Wear what you like!

I wear big hippy ones like this

People tell me it suits me.

I wouldn't worry about what anyone else thinks if you're comfortable.

I have very short hair which I push off my face with a fabric hairband when I'm taking my face off at night, I actually like the way it looks [and I'm 45].

Weelady77 Mon 20-Jan-14 19:16:05

You wear it if you comfortable bugger everyone else

I personally wouldn't wear one but that's just my choice I certainly wouldn't stare if I seen you wearing one smile

Vikki88 Mon 20-Jan-14 19:17:10

Isn't anyone who's into double figures too old for a hairband?! confused

msrisotto Mon 20-Jan-14 19:18:04

Woah woah WOAH!! WTF is wrong with hairbands???

Lonecatwithkitten Mon 20-Jan-14 19:18:08

I have fine elastic ones, about 5mm diameter that are hair coloured so no one can see them. Effect hair held of face, but no one can see it - win, win.

msrisotto Mon 20-Jan-14 19:18:50

Like, one's that you use to put long hair up into pony tails?

mistermakersgloopyglue Mon 20-Jan-14 19:27:03

Meh, I'm 31 and I wear stuff like this in my hair quite a lot.

I'm sure some people think it looks ridiculous but I struggle to care. I would prefer something like with a wedding outfit than a naff fascinator thing, but that's just personal preference.

haggiscatcher Mon 20-Jan-14 19:28:07

Ooh I like the Rasta ones! Cheers!

Creamycoolerwithcream Mon 20-Jan-14 19:30:23

I've got one with black sequins on one side, it's very Downton Abbeyesque. I'm 44 and love it.

What a question. Cannot wait to peruse the links grin

Wear whatever you like OP. I have quite a collection of hairbands, bobbles, clips and barettes.

Ericaequites Mon 20-Jan-14 19:50:27

I'm 43, and still like hair bands. Except for two crew cuts, I've worn my hair thus since I was thirteen.

Catsmamma Mon 20-Jan-14 19:52:12

gawd ladies, get with should use your reading glasses as impromptu hairbands.

<presbyopia sucks>

gordyslovesheep Mon 20-Jan-14 19:55:09

you are never to old to wear or do anything if it pleases you

Alice bands scream Tory Wife at me though

PrimalLass Mon 20-Jan-14 20:00:01

I always wear my sunglasses as a hairband - they have to sit close to my head so I am fussy about what pair/s I buy. Danni looks great (as always( with hers so maybe I should have a rethink.

pizzachickenhotforyou Mon 20-Jan-14 20:01:46

Whatever it is you will always be too old too young too fat too thin too whatever. It will go out of fashion and come back in (I think they're in now, maybe that was jan) There are rules you must follow and they are constantly changing and being rewritten by people who I don't care about.
If you think it looks good and you want to wear it wear it.
Too old at your age tho really. You will regret thinking you were too old now in 2044

Latara Mon 20-Jan-14 20:07:03

A plain black fabric band is ok for example in the gym I think?

KittensoftPuppydog Mon 20-Jan-14 20:08:45

Stop it now.

Creamycoolerwithcream Mon 20-Jan-14 20:13:04

I've got hair to my waist and an absolutely massive box of scrunchies, bobbles, clip, grips, bands, pegs, mini pegs. I have French plaits, pleats, pony tails, half up half down, WAG curls, smooth and sleek days. No way do I think 44 is to old for a head band.

WitchWay Mon 20-Jan-14 20:16:49

I don't like hairbands much, but now I need reading glasses I am often to be found with them pushed up onto my head. Exactly like a hairband in fact. It looks fine & DH likes it - not bothered what anyone else thinks & I don't want a neck-cord yet as I'm not that ancient...

Simple tortoise she'll Alice band when my hair is driving me nuts.

As I wear glasses, the sunglasses trick doesn't work

sophielouise Mon 20-Jan-14 20:33:10

Do they really still sell scrunchies? Surely not!

Weelady77 Mon 20-Jan-14 20:35:47

Yeah Sophie river island sell ones now!

scoobydooagain Mon 20-Jan-14 20:38:36

I am nearly 40 and wear hairbands often - slim ones- and I get comments frequently about how much I suit them - and I don't think they are all taking the piss!

MostWicked Mon 20-Jan-14 20:54:26

Good grief, you're a grown woman.
Wear what the hell you want to wear!
Hair bands are absolutely fine at any age.

Offler Mon 20-Jan-14 20:58:04

I have a very slim, silver Alice band in my hair, it's invisible due to my curls but keeps the hair off my face! I'm 38.

Splodges Mon 20-Jan-14 21:23:28

I wear scrunchies all the time, cos they hold my thick heavy hair well and they're nice and soft and don't pull. I have blue ones and black ones, and also mental garish ones for sillier hair dos. Honestly what is the point of being an adult if you have to be all sensible all the time? So boring!

cherrytree63 Mon 20-Jan-14 22:14:10

I wear wide hair bands, mainly when my fringe needs cutting as I hate hair in my eyes, but also if I'm growing my hair and it's too short to tie back but long enough to irritate me at times,

I'm 50.

WotchOotErAPolis Mon 20-Jan-14 22:24:58

cherrytree63 - like you, I'm 50 - maybe we should just start wearing purple too?

Or just give up trying to please some people?

KeatsiePie Mon 20-Jan-14 22:26:58

No of course not! I like headbands, don't wear them very often, but think they look quite nice and classic. E.g., Charlotte in Sex and the City wore them very well, and while I can't remember what her age was supposed to be over the years/in the movies I'm sure she was not 25.

And for down the road, they seem to suit Jackie in The Good Wife ...

SeaSickSal Mon 20-Jan-14 22:28:43

Are you posh? If so YANBU.

berrycake Tue 21-Jan-14 07:14:10

I work in the food industry and we all have to wear hair bands, so most of us wear bandanas tied up like this (except it actually keeps the hair off our faces, it's not just for show)

I wear wide hairbands to cover my scabs on my head if people want to judge so be it im sure would pefer to look at a headband than scabs

bodygoingsouth Tue 21-Jan-14 07:39:04

op you are 42, wear what the bloody hell you like. the ones who narrating don't as you are too old are daft. wear purple and spit and all that don't cha know.

I wear short skirts and wooly tights, swap clothes with my teen dds and I am a knats knacker off 50.. I am gorgeous though grin

GingerBlondecat Tue 21-Jan-14 08:17:56

Go for it Darling.

i'm nearly 50. Long hair. I still wear what I damm well Want too

I own and wear a number of different head bands, Proudly grin

strongurgetofly Tue 21-Jan-14 08:28:01

On the subject of scrunchies: I used to make my own in the 90s,i had a scrunchie for every occasion. I also wore whole outfits made of velvet and tie dye velour.
Dressing was way more exciting in those days!

Wuxiapian Tue 21-Jan-14 09:01:29

I'm 36 and wear slim ones to keep the strays away.

I like them and don't give a crap if anyone doesn't!

Wear what you like and want to, OP!

GhostsInSnow Tue 21-Jan-14 09:59:21

Wear what you want and what you are comfortable with, what anyone else thinks is neither here nor there.
There is no 'uniform' for life. You don't suddenly hit 40 and have to wear a bloody twin set and pearls. If you like it then to hell with everyone else.
