Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga.... have some pride for God's sake. You are successful and talented women. Prostituting yourselves for your art is not necessary. There was camel toe tonight. Before the watershed. with simulated shagging on a piano. sad

Why can't a successful woman be successful without having to perform virtually naked?

Going on the title I was going to say just stop then grin

Are they prostituting themselves?

I don't think so.

Are you sure you're not jealous of them being able to do it hmmmmm? wink

<tries to twerk>

<puts back out>

lovelilies Sun 27-Oct-13 21:31:21

what actually is twerking? blush

TEErickOrTEEreat Sun 27-Oct-13 21:33:31

Well since twerking has been a form of cancer for centuries, YABU.

TEErickOrTEEreat Sun 27-Oct-13 21:34:00

Shit! Dancing!!!!

Heartbrokenmum73 Sun 27-Oct-13 21:37:25

I also don't know what twerking is and I really don't want to look it up and see Cyrus et al 'doing' it.

Is it like crumping? I know crumping!

Blipthepunkinpowercarver Sun 27-Oct-13 21:39:52

Yup what is twerking?

LEMisafucker Sun 27-Oct-13 21:40:25

i don't even know what fucking twerking is!!!

LEMisafucker Sun 27-Oct-13 21:41:21

killpeppa Sun 27-Oct-13 21:42:20

WorraLiberty Sun 27-Oct-13 21:43:15

You ever seen the Jamaican twerking videos? A person could do themselves an injury like that. <Hoiks pants>

justmuddlingalongsomehow Sun 27-Oct-13 21:55:32

My pants are bigger than Gaga's, that's for sure. Much hoiking required for maximum comfort. Twerking would just be unpleasant.

But I'm serious about the image given to young women though.

cantspel Sun 27-Oct-13 21:59:09

If they or anyone else wants to twerk then let them or are we still telling other women what is acceptable for them to do?

WorraLiberty Sun 27-Oct-13 22:06:09

Seriously, if there was internet in the 1960s, this thread would be about The Twist.

There was much bosom hoiking and tutting at young people twisting their hips and shaking their bums to that on the dance floor.

SPsTombRaidingWithCliff Sun 27-Oct-13 22:08:28

Tee grin

I can twerk with the best of them. Miley and Gaga ain't got shit on me. I twerk without realising

My five year old son saw gaga tonight - I was in the kitchen. He was horrified and upset. 'She was naked mummy.'

Stupid stupid ignorant soul-less load of horse shit. How dare they. It's half term so loads of kids are up later than usual... and it's results night on a 'family show'.

I shouldn't go back into the sitting room to find my little boy embarrassed and shocked at half past eight because he's seen ITV executives splash this moronic naked trashy woman sticking her tits and arse out.

Very angry.

poorbuthappy Sun 27-Oct-13 22:24:50

Ummm why was I deleted?
It was a video of Heart and Ann Wilson doing Led Zepplin Stairway to Heaven.
Just so great to listen to and enjoy and forget about twerking.
Perhaps I should take it to the relationship boards and goad someone.

So confused.

SPsTombRaidingWithCliff Sun 27-Oct-13 22:25:43

You got deleted for a song?!

grin

poorbuthappy Sun 27-Oct-13 22:29:07

Apparently, unless I majorly fucked up with the link, which I suppose is possible.

Such a good version though, made Robert Plant cry and everything.

Didactylos Sun 27-Oct-13 22:30:38

I know, Im sick of it too.

I miss the days when I could just walk to the bus...

SirChenjin Sun 27-Oct-13 22:31:44

It's the latest craze that does fantastic things in terms of persuading our daughters that the only way they can be famous is to objectify themselves rather than using their talent. Brilliant, abso-fucking-lutely brilliant. 2013 and this is supposed to be progress??

poorbuthappy Sun 27-Oct-13 22:33:37

off to bed none the fucking wiser.

Is twerking not, like, so over?

Not as a cultural, Jamaican Dance Hall phenomenon, but as an acquired-by-any-popstress-who-needs-to-boost-her-profile gimmick IYWKIM.

So ov-ah.

But yes, I am also v hmm and angry at the empty sexualisation of every little stupid, samey pop song. Stop and desist.

I am now dying to know what your link led to, poorbuthappy grin

SirChenjin Sun 27-Oct-13 22:39:10

Oh no, definitely not over judging by some of the photos that other girls have posted on my DD's FB page shock

The thing is, Gaga and Miley are actually very talented women and don't need to do this to sell their music - but this brainwashing at a subliminal level seems to have affected even them.

WorraLiberty Sun 27-Oct-13 22:41:38

My five year old son saw gaga tonight - I was in the kitchen. He was horrified and upset. 'She was naked mummy.'

I genuinely only saw the first minute or so of Lady Gaga

Did she end up removing the seashell bra and high waisted granny pants? shock

I didn't realise that. Now I understand why there has been some angst on other threads about the pre-watershed blush

killpeppa Sun 27-Oct-13 22:54:58

no she just removed the wig, and the shells fell.

it wasn't too graceful

I don't think that Gaga's performance can in any way be compared to the train wreck that MC is.

I would put Gaga under the category of Performance Artist, she has performed in very little and in "Outrageous" outfits for the last five years, since her first hit.

She isn't overtly sexual in the same way as MC or CA.

I would liken her use if her body and look in a similar way as Pink, it is in part a protest, because she doesn't conform to any expectations, from a Patriarchal POV.

Whether it should of been saved until after the Watershed is a different matter.

Gaga's performances and costumes are not done to sell her music, they are an extension. Com

Sorry, completely different than what MC is doing and Mariah Carey etc.

SirChenjin Mon 28-Oct-13 15:45:40

I think Gaga is infinitely more talented that MC, and she certainly doesn't use sex to sell her music in the same way as MC/Rhianna/etc do. However, I do think she's in danger of crossing the line - some of the tit shots recently have been pretty gratuitous, and it's interesting that she's chosen to go down this route just as another album is coming out.

hiddenhome Mon 28-Oct-13 15:59:16

Why don't they just get it over with and show us their cervixes then we can all get back to trying to find decent music hmm My brain is in the post naked era ffs, I hope everyone else catches up.

SirChenjin Mon 28-Oct-13 16:12:46

grin Hidden - so true!

It's just grim - it's as if we've stepped through to some parallel universe and into a pornified version of the 1950s. Very weird.

Oh yes, bring on the post-naked era.

grin

BurlyShassey Mon 28-Oct-13 17:19:36

no ones explained what twerking actually is though. WHAT IS IT???????

theres controversy over sexism and stuff yet these women choose to do what they do,

yes, they CHOOSE, they have a brain, they have a tongue (Miley grin), they can say ''NO''.

BurlyShassey Mon 28-Oct-13 17:21:18

sexism??? I meant (thesausrus correcty-thing) sexualisation of women/girls and the 'role models' etc etc.

jellyandcake Mon 28-Oct-13 17:30:25

I saw the Tiffany video of 'I Think We're Alone Now' somewhere and she performed in a woolly jumper. You would never, ever get a young female pop star doing this now. It just seems automatic that they must be overtly sexual in their videos/performances, regardless of what they are actually singing about. The only exception I can think of off the top of my head is Adele.

I do think Gaga is a bit different though and although she was performing in a flesh coloured bikini it was very different to Miley's horrible VMAs thing. Although Gaga is often sexual , it's always in a weird way - on X Factor she looked a bit crazed with dishevelled hair and not much make up which I thought was making some kind of point, though I don't know exactly what. She is much more interesting and not a soft porn cliche like Rihanna etc. I find watching the music channels too depressing and frequently shocking to bother with them now so I have to say I don't know precisely what twerking is either...

BurlyShassey Mon 28-Oct-13 17:40:48

Jelly and also Debby Harry. she was gorgeous, and sexy but not cavorting around, writhing and wearing next to nothing to sell records.

agree, I can only think of Adele being the only person around atm that actually wears clothes!

Mandy2003 Mon 28-Oct-13 17:54:06

Twerkin' good
Twerkin' bad

For *BurleyShassey]]

BurlyShassey Mon 28-Oct-13 17:57:50

Not that im interested in actually twerking, Mandy, others asked too! thought I was the only one who didn't know what it was!

SirChenjin Mon 28-Oct-13 18:15:27

Agree re Debbie Harry, Tiffany etc. I'm ancient, so my reference points are women like Chrissie Hynde, Annie Lennox, Sinead O'Connor, Kim Wilde, Cyndi Lauper, Patty Smyth, Stevie Nicks etc etc - none of them used this kind of hypersexualisation to sell their music (or themselves...). That's what I mean about the lack of progress by young women in the music business - it's not about talent so much anymore and all about how much flesh you can get out, how many times you're mentioned on Twitter, and how much shock you can cause. Utterly grim sad

BurlyShassey Mon 28-Oct-13 18:24:48

Sirchenjin agree with everyone else you said too.

I think before Madonna, the most sexual one was Kate Bush in the Babooshka video, even so, this was a women with talent, and not naked or twerking either!

Tailtwister Mon 28-Oct-13 18:37:22

YANBU OP, it's getting tedious.

However, it's bloody hard to do. I watched a video on Youtube which kind of broke it down a bit and it was impossible.

So it's just shaking your bum?

Back2Two Mon 28-Oct-13 18:50:15

I agree with hidden
Let's just get Rihanna, Miley and whoever else is caught up in this race to spontaneously combust from over sexualised performances in a room and let them fight/shag/twerk it out to the death.

Soon, wooley jumpers are going to be pornographic in a weird backlash to all these desperate "empowering" soft porn acts.

SirChenjin Mon 28-Oct-13 19:32:09

Oh god I hope so - a kind of moral backlash?

lessonsintightropes Mon 28-Oct-13 19:40:38

Ahhhh I finally understand now someone told me to look at the Jamaican twerking videos. I just thought MC was imitating doggy style sex - she wasn't - she was trying to wiggle her arse. But sadly, because it's non-existent, it just looked really weird and unsexy. You need a decent booty to pull it off and sadly neither she nor Gaga has the arse for it.

Oh, nononono, please no moral backlash, but maybe one of taste? Or dignity? Or a sense of 'a time and a place for everything'??

I thought the dancers in the first video linked to by Mandy were amazing, but still not what I want to see with my dinner iykwim (but then again I also struggle watching these double-jointed circus performers hmm)

SirChenjin Mon 28-Oct-13 20:15:04

Why no moral backlash? Surely taste, dignity and a sense of time and place play a part in morality? Quick google definition of morality is 'principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behaviour' - that sounds like a pretty good place to start to me.

As for MC not imitating doggy style - really? I think she's pretty much going for that look - esp. as she seems to need to twerk against something/someone rather than going it alone (as it were, fnarr fnarr).

happydaze77 Mon 28-Oct-13 20:24:04

Agree with the op. I've moved across from a similar thread as I've been to 'get the fuck over myself', by those lovely AIBU ers. Here I am amongst friends!

SirChenjin Mon 28-Oct-13 20:30:21

Don't worry about it - the 'get the fuck over yourself' brigade (ditto 'get a life', 'you sound very entitled' 'you sound really precious, do you live a sheltered life' etc etc blah blah blah) can't help themselves on AIBU. It's like a bare lightbulb to moths grin

happydaze77 Mon 28-Oct-13 20:36:58

Very true SirChenjin

I don't disagree with that definition of 'morality' but fear that a 'moral' backlash wrt to performing arts might get hijacked by the 'moral majority' of which I am highly suspicious.

SirChenjin Tue 29-Oct-13 13:25:24

I'm not sure I class MC, Rihanna etc as the performing arts grin

Echocave Tue 29-Oct-13 13:53:06

I find it quite depressing that Gaga feels the need to go on a show like that in her pants. I'd rather she'd been in one of her hilarious costumes (disclaimer: I'm sure she's making interesting, valid artistic points but I just find them laugh out loud funny most of the time).
My dd has just turned 2. I do wonder what the hell pop stars be doing to get attention by the time she's a tween..!

Akifden Tue 29-Oct-13 14:02:42

Has anyone seen the O2 tracks advert that uses her video? That's in randomly and unexpectedly. It caught us at 9.30am surely that's really wrong . Also jumped from the other thread that's full of empowered women justifying it.

Pigsmummy Tue 29-Oct-13 14:05:51

I thought twerking was using Twitter for work. Ooops
