to have a little Morten moment

Kids put to bed, kitchen tidied, laundry sorted, I sat down on the sofa with a nice cuppa to watch Bake Off, and thought to myself "Ooh, I know what I fancy, a little bit of Morten". Maybe it was someone talking about macaroons, I don't know. Anyway it was too easy to fire up YouTube and do a quick search, and there was the Stay on These Roads video.

Oh my eyes, he was lovely.

I've not so much as thought about Mr Harket for years. I'm pushing 40, with two kids, and dh will be home any minute. It is not reasonable behaviour, is it?

FreudiansSlipper Tue 22-Oct-13 20:21:31

i loved him too, and still do

he spotted me when i went to see a-ha at Hammersmith Palais, i knew he felt the same the only thing that kept is apart was the thousands of other girls there he had to protect me from them <sigh>

SomethingOnce Tue 22-Oct-13 20:22:50

Not at all, I get this every now and then.

HumphreyCobbler Tue 22-Oct-13 20:22:54

how strange - only this morning I was thinking about the poster I had of him on my bedroom wall. He was indeed lovely.

gussiegrips Tue 22-Oct-13 20:24:05

Ageing nicely too.

<tries not to swoon>

Rhubarbgarden Tue 22-Oct-13 20:24:45

Oh hello Humph, fancy meeting you here!

Those arms. Mmm.

Rhubarbgarden Tue 22-Oct-13 20:25:18

I'm so glad I'm not alone.

AnaisHellWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 20:35:24

Oh - I was going to start a thread about him the other day.

I wore the little leather bracelets like he did. I was dead cool.

YouTheCat Tue 22-Oct-13 20:36:06

Yep I am certain now. grin

PuzzleRocks Tue 22-Oct-13 20:36:08

I have it on good authority that he's an obnoxious twit. I truly don't want to believe it though.
I still would.

WireCat Tue 22-Oct-13 20:36:22

Loads of fans coming out of the closet!

ddubsgirl Tue 22-Oct-13 20:37:03

smile Cried at the concert sad my friend got my tickets for Brighton center

FreudiansSlipper Tue 22-Oct-13 20:40:40

i cried too grin at the concert i went to

not sure that they actually sung anything all you could hear was hysterical screaming

AnaisHellWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 20:40:41

I can still remember watching them on Saturday Superstore with their corded landlines grin

Weasleyismyking Tue 22-Oct-13 20:41:44

He was always too neat. I preferred Mags.

don't know anyone that like Pal though

WireCat Tue 22-Oct-13 20:41:57

I managed to hold back the tears at their final London concert.

SaigonSaigon Tue 22-Oct-13 20:42:13

It's 100% perfectly normal to have a Morten moment.

Or a Mags moment.

Or a Morten-and-Mags-stuck-in-a-lift-moment.

Not that I give it much thought...

Check out the 'I call Your Name' video. My personal fave!

BurlyShassey Tue 22-Oct-13 20:44:29

I loved Mags. everyone else liked Morten. thought I could nab Mags then but noooooooo.

and imo morten has NOT age well! knew that even in the 80's hew wouldn't.

aahhhhh the living daylights.......the blood that moves the body.....hunting high and low...

Scoundrel Days is one of my all time fave albums.

and sawthem in concert in the 80s. Mags on the skateboard......

yy I used to wear the leather bracelets all up my arms too!grin

BurlyShassey Tue 22-Oct-13 20:46:18

ah yes Saturday superstore when Mags dressed up in Bernie Cliftons ostrich costume! grin.

hands up, I liked Pal too!

WireCat Tue 22-Oct-13 20:46:20

Think I've uploaded pic of me & Magne from Feb this year on my profile.

SpottyDottie Tue 22-Oct-13 20:47:19

I think you'll find I'm Mrs Harket grin

StanleyLambchop Tue 22-Oct-13 20:48:08

I quite liked Pal actually. All three of them in a lift?? What do they look like now, anyone know?

MymbleHasRisenFromTheGrave Tue 22-Oct-13 20:48:38

Oh, he's always been so beautiful. That bit in the Take On Me video where he beckons her into the picture...I wished that was me very badly!

WireCat Tue 22-Oct-13 20:48:39

I'm @mrs_harket on twitter! grin

SpottyDottie Tue 22-Oct-13 20:52:06

Blast! WireCat grin

noviceoftheday Tue 22-Oct-13 20:52:19

Yanbu at all. Not one little bit. Oh I sooo would!

DontMentionThePrunes Tue 22-Oct-13 20:54:37

Here's a bit of Morten (promise, keep watching!)

FlatsInDagenham Tue 22-Oct-13 20:55:24

You know, I don't do celebrity crushes. Never really have.

But Morten.... <swoon>

AnaisHellWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 20:55:38

Wirecat, that's great!

Our Mort went out with the girl in the Take On Me video. I was so jealous!

Balloonist Tue 22-Oct-13 20:57:28

That voice!! Incredible. Never heard anything like it.

He's in his fifties now and still looking good. There was a thread a while back with photos and he looked good!

Sparklingbrook Tue 22-Oct-13 20:57:30

I love that Dont. grin Morten doesn't do it for me though. John Taylor stole my heart and that was that.....

AnaisHellWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 21:00:39

DontMentionThePrunes that video is hilarious!

"Sold to the gentleman in the mustard cords" grin

Good on Morty to appear in it. Like when Johnny Depp went on The Fast Show.

gussiegrips Tue 22-Oct-13 21:01:41

Now,Prunes I'm not really very keen on mustard. But, I'd swallow that.

Lashings and lashings of the stuff.

Balloonist Tue 22-Oct-13 21:02:16

www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2iOOYVXLc4

Recent footage on BBC Breakfast

DontMentionThePrunes Tue 22-Oct-13 21:06:01

It's great, isn't it? "I know where you can get some tomatoes at three times the price!" "Really?! Where?!" grin

(To return to the subject) I think I was about 13 when Take On Me was released...obviously MH looked like a big girl's blouse, but he was still formative... Sigh.

FreudiansSlipper Tue 22-Oct-13 21:09:07

oh dear he needs to do his shirt up he could catch a cold

i have gone off him a little after seeing that bbc breakfast clip sad

flashheartscanoe Tue 22-Oct-13 21:10:43

Have you seen the bit in this is 40 when they are in the car and he's listening to the pixies and she puts on 'take on me'-? classic
Morten was my first love- shook his hand at the albert hall new years eve concert '95.

Bahhhhhumbug Tue 22-Oct-13 21:10:48

nahhh - you can keep him ladies doesn't do it for me am afraid. He reminds me of Patrick Swayzee too and without speaking ill of the dead l never understood all the fuss about him either. Small eyes , too sculpted looking, almost mannequin like.

<dodges rotten tomatoes>

Sparklingbrook Tue 22-Oct-13 21:12:21

I'm with you Bah PS did nowt for me either. We must be weird. grin

AnaisHellWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 21:12:56

I always liked Cry Wolef

Much better than Saturday Superstore.

Balloonist Tue 22-Oct-13 21:13:23

I think he's still very handsome but he is a bit dour. He's not as charismatic as you might think. Maybe because he's been so pretty all his life. I think he is a bit defensive about all the focus on his looks.

Luna13 Tue 22-Oct-13 21:17:44

Ooooooh Morten grin add one more fan! YANBU at all! thlwink

Bahhhhhumbug Tue 22-Oct-13 21:19:09

Never get into bed with a man who is prettier or slimmer than you is my motto Sparkling though these days would have to lower the bar on the latter with mi middle age spread an all grin

WireCat Tue 22-Oct-13 21:19:10

He is a flirt!

DontMentionThePrunes Tue 22-Oct-13 21:21:24

To be fair he was always a bit twatty. Remember when he said he was a virgin and grew orchids?

Needingthework Tue 22-Oct-13 21:23:50

'Is that somebody screaming, wasn't me for sure' Love, love, love the album Scoundrel Days.

Rhubarbgarden Tue 22-Oct-13 21:24:23

Get orf my thread, Bah! [rotten tomato]

I went off him a little bit when I read an interview with him in a magazine a few years ago actually. I can't open the BBC clip. Maybe it's just as well.

I still like looking at him though. I could look at him all day

Rhubarbgarden Tue 22-Oct-13 21:26:00

I grow orchids because of that, Prunes. Still.

blush

bsc Tue 22-Oct-13 21:39:48

Oh dear wirecat - he seems to have been morphed into Matthew Kelly!

Maybe the picture is just too small for my aged eyes?

DontMentionThePrunes Tue 22-Oct-13 21:40:42

Really? That's lovely! I don't think he was a virgin really. I always wondered if he did grow orchids. I mean it's very cold in Norway.

Rhubarbgarden Tue 22-Oct-13 21:44:53

He must have been the only pop star with a greenhouse.

Special.

DontMentionThePrunes Tue 22-Oct-13 21:48:26

Indeed grin

My dad presented me (in about 1985?) with a Norwegian sweater he'd picked up on his travels some time in the early 70s. I was absolutely delighted. That and a few bootlaces around my wrists. Happy times.

PrimalLass Tue 22-Oct-13 22:23:41

Oh I loved him. Was devastated (at 12!) to not get tickets for a concert but happened to drive past with my parents the next day when they were leaving their hotel. Got Morten's autograph.

Slainte Tue 22-Oct-13 22:29:56

I've seen him recently very close up and he hasn't aged very well, I'm sure he thinks the same of me grin.

Milkjug Tue 22-Oct-13 22:40:49

Oh, Stanley, how nice to meet someone else who loved Pal! I thought it was only me and my friend Iris in first year of secondary school...

Lyrics are pumping alarmingly into my head.

I can still hear our screams competing
You're hissing your s's like a snake
Now in the mirror stands half a man
I thought no one could break...

Quite demented, when you think of it. Though I admit, I cried at the 'Take On Me' video when Morten got killed by the evil gangster comic villains.

GrendelsMum Tue 22-Oct-13 22:44:56

It's allright, Rhubarb. I've checked the web, and apparently he genuinely is a keen orchid grower.

GoshAnneGorilla Tue 22-Oct-13 22:50:31

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful man.

I recently showed DH a clip of A-ha (he grew up in an A-ha-less land) to compare them to One Direction and how crap teen heart throbs are these days, he had to agree that Morten was very good looking indeed.

And that voice! It's astounding that they were seen as a "teen band".

Not only did he go out with the girl from the Take on Me video, but she dumped him for Billy Idol - why?

Morten and Mags in a lift - that's tonight's dreams sorted. wink

Weasleyismyking Tue 22-Oct-13 22:52:49

I can't get 'cry wolf' out if my head now. Which wouldn't be so bad if it hadn't morphed into an Alan partridge AHA! between 'cry wolf' and 'time to worry'!

Rhubarbgarden Tue 22-Oct-13 22:56:24

Phew.

LessMissAbs Wed 23-Oct-13 00:19:55

I'm a fan and also recently looked him up. He looks older in the Breakfast video chat from 2012, but compared to the average British man, not so bad!

He has a real epicanthic fold in his eyelids which make his eyes look smaller. Being Norwegian, he quite possibly has Asian ancestry which will help him looking younger even though is eyes look rather small.

Have to say though I wondered from the Breakfast tv video if he had had cheek fillers and Botox - normally faces lose volume as they age, not gain it, and he hasn't put on weight.

SomethingOnce Wed 23-Oct-13 00:40:12

I too wondered if he'd had his cheeks done...

ddubsgirl Wed 23-Oct-13 00:49:27

Been married few times and has few kids youngest is only about 4/5 I think

StanleyLambchop Wed 23-Oct-13 08:04:34

Milkjug, Pal seems to have aged pretty well actually, Just checked him out on-line. I certainly still would!

liquidstate Wed 23-Oct-13 08:58:32

I also saw them at the Hammersmith Palais! Mags did and handstand walk across the stage. Loved him. grin

montysma1 Wed 23-Oct-13 09:40:35

Loved Morton. But also Adam Ant. Think it was a cheek bone thing. Oh god, Adam. Now he has not aged well, poor soul.

LessMissAbs Wed 23-Oct-13 09:59:46

Apparently Adam Ant is still fending off women! But I agree he looks nothing like he used to.

Eminem and Pharell are two others, who although younger, are ageing well.

WandaDoff Wed 23-Oct-13 10:04:22

My Mother used to call him 'Haughton Market' to wind me up.

LeBearPolar Wed 23-Oct-13 10:06:44

I was definitely going to marry Morten Harket when I was a teenager. Sigh. So many posters on my wall.

I still remember going round to my friend's house because she had a VCR shock grin It was so hi-tech! And we watched the Take On Me video over and over and over again, wishing we were the girl in the video.

Did anyone see her on the Big Fat Quiz of the 80s? She was a special guest and the contestants had to work out what she had done in the 80s that made her face (if not her name!) well-known!

youretoastmildred Wed 23-Oct-13 10:11:17

Oh my goodness [swoon] that face, that voice...
"Take on me" should be ILLEGAL at karaoke because NO ONE ELSE has that range, and with such a beautiful tone in each register...

When we are finally together he will serenade me with "Take on me" every morning in the kitchen while I drink delicious fresh coffee made to a very high quality Scandiwegian spec

HormonalHousewife Wed 23-Oct-13 10:29:23

Aaah lordy lordy.... Morton and Adam Ant what a combination

although adam no longer

DontMentionThePrunes Wed 23-Oct-13 11:04:32

love the coffee fantasy, Mildred grin
Coffee certainly never figured when I were a teenager.

rubyslippers Wed 23-Oct-13 11:07:31

Loved A-ha

I can't believe he's in his 50's

WireCat Wed 23-Oct-13 14:03:18

wanders in to once again lay claim to Morten

gussiegrips Wed 23-Oct-13 14:27:26

All this prompting of happy memories has made me go right of DH.

He doesn't even have a pair of splodgily bleached jeans. Or cheekbones. Pah.

paperdress Wed 23-Oct-13 15:14:52

The leather bracelets!
I had a 3-part lifesize poster (smash hits) but cut off # 3/3 (legs) so i could reach it to snog.
I feel giddy still when i flick telly and catch a glimpse of him. So totally lush...

DidoTheDodo Wed 23-Oct-13 15:25:27

I prefer Morten Lauridsen. I think his music is better.

Rhubarbgarden Wed 23-Oct-13 16:34:29

gussie I know what you mean. I managed to snag myself an alternative tall dark northern European with cheekbones (ish) but he doesn't serenade me and his fashion sense is terrible. It's very disappointing.

Lizzylou Wed 23-Oct-13 18:22:39

I loved Morten. I think now, older and more worldly I would rather do Mags though. He looks dirtier.
I read an article on Morten a few years ago too and he sounded rather controlling with his wife and hardwork too iirc.
I had a fab poster of Morten topless getting out of a swimming pool.

LeBearPolar Wed 23-Oct-13 18:31:11

Was it this picture, LizzieLou? grin I may have had the same one...

And I had this one

OMG, googling images of Morten from the 80s is bringing back so many memories!

LeBearPolar Wed 23-Oct-13 18:33:20

Loved this one too...

Lizzylou Wed 23-Oct-13 19:06:42

It was the first one!
PHWOARRRRRRRRR!

DontMentionThePrunes Wed 23-Oct-13 19:21:25

Oh dear me, that swimming pool one actually gave me a tummy-flutter. I mean, cough cough, it did back when I was 13. <checks again>

Pål was really very sweet-faced, wasn't he? Like a wee angel.

DontMentionThePrunes Wed 23-Oct-13 19:22:30
Rhubarbgarden Wed 23-Oct-13 19:30:38

Oh my god! That swimming pool photo! <faints>

Lizzylou Wed 23-Oct-13 19:47:23

I know! Fuelled many a preteen saucy dream that one. He is just so beautiful.
I think ideally I would gaze adoringly at Morten and do unspeakable rudeness with Mags.

Lizzylou Wed 23-Oct-13 19:48:53

Lebear, I had the third one as a poster.
I actually think Pal has aged well. Looks better now.
