I loath this man, hate his music his smug face why do people like him he is so fucking dull please enlighten me to his popularity

TheCrumpetQueen Sun 13-Oct-13 12:57:00

Can't stand him either.

I dont like him either. He is so boring. His voice is monotone.

He isn't even attractive either.

sonlypuppyfat Sun 13-Oct-13 12:58:06

Thank you Crumpet you are a woman of considerable taste.

filee777 Sun 13-Oct-13 12:58:18

I think he is awful...

Tommy Sun 13-Oct-13 12:59:00

I share your pain....... I've always thought him dull

dexter73 Sun 13-Oct-13 12:59:02

justmuddlingalongsomehow Sun 13-Oct-13 12:59:18

shock angry biscuit

I <3 Gary almost as much as I <3 brew with cake

Hassled Sun 13-Oct-13 12:59:27

I think it's probably easy enough to get through life without ever being exposed to Gary Barlow if you put your mind to it.

I think he seems pleasant enough, he's written nice enough songs in his day - bit bland maybe but nothing to warrant your OP.

underthemountain Sun 13-Oct-13 12:59:45

I liked him (well some of the take that songs) until he became an X factor judge. I don't like his personality on that and even if faked he was obviously happy to portray that.

poppymagnum Sun 13-Oct-13 13:00:58

I used to like him until he started x factor. Now I can't stand him. Haven't watched it since.

Overblown sense of self importance.

filee777 Sun 13-Oct-13 13:01:25

I have to agree, I go through whole years without thinking of Gary Barlow but I suppose if you like the X factor (which I don't) you have to put up with the smarmy barstard which makes it harder.

I'm not a fan of his either. Good to know I'm in good company.

FIFIBEBE Sun 13-Oct-13 13:11:21

He intrigues me. He has mentioned his addictive personality in some interviews. I think it must be difficult trying to be somebody publicly which is clearly an act. He is quite dull though I agree.

Pobblewhohasnotoes Sun 13-Oct-13 13:16:20

As an original take that fan, I love him.

catgirl1976 Sun 13-Oct-13 13:17:55

I never liked him before, but during this series of X Factor I have become very attracted to him blush

sonlypuppyfat Sun 13-Oct-13 13:19:18

I never liked Take That either. I really like music you see

BasilBabyEater Sun 13-Oct-13 13:23:05

"I think it's probably easy enough to get through life without ever being exposed to Gary Barlow if you put your mind to it."

I managed it for years.

Having children exposes you to stuff you would otherwise never have heard of though.

SabrinaMulhollandJjones Sun 13-Oct-13 13:26:30

I've never been keen on him, but I know someone who works with him, and apparently he's a great bloke. I'm still a bit hmm about that...

SoleSource Sun 13-Oct-13 13:26:33

Dull dork.

TheCrumpetQueen Sun 13-Oct-13 13:29:05

I think he comes across as really mean and grumpy on xfactor, but not in the way Simon did, just a mean way

BasilBabyEater Sun 13-Oct-13 13:33:21

I think it's part of this fiction of XFactor etc. being "pantomime".

We're all supposed to pretend that the people on there aren't real and don't have real feelings, they're panto figures.

While at the same time having our heart-strings pulled over the sad stories.

A bit odd. I suspect GB's persona on that is this panto thing.

It's all perfectly awful and I tend to avoid it all nowadays.

PrimalLass Sun 13-Oct-13 13:41:13

I like him in TT, but not so much on his own. Would love another TT concert.

maras2 Sun 13-Oct-13 13:50:22

Is it a generation thing? My DD age 36 loves Garry Barlow and can't understand my inability to love and adore him too.Apparently I have no taste < and am an old gimmer > smile

FrightRider Sun 13-Oct-13 13:57:30

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

BeckAndCall Sun 13-Oct-13 13:58:33

Just as a matter of interest, why start a thread to say how much you hate someone you've never actually met, who you can avoid and not even think about on a daily basis if you just try?

It would be wholly different if you were criticising his work or something he's said in public or his political opinions or something, but no, it's just him for being him.

It smacks of playground bullying the way everyone is happy to just pile in and say they hate him too. Stop it! It's rude, it'd uncalled for and its a pointless way to spend your time. Do something meaningful instead.

catsrus Sun 13-Oct-13 14:05:15

friends of mine told me about this

seems like a nice thing to do - he seems like a decent person to me - so yes I think YABU, and nasty.

sonlypuppyfat Sun 13-Oct-13 14:05:31

I'm sure he's got broad enough shoulders to take me being nasty to him.

catsrus Sun 13-Oct-13 14:05:44
maras2 Sun 13-Oct-13 14:08:29

Don't know what that link was Catsrus, but he did a flying visit to a children's hospice near me a couple of days ago.

maras2 Sun 13-Oct-13 14:09:23

Sorry, x post.He's a busy boy isn't he?

Jelly15 Sun 13-Oct-13 14:13:04

I love Gary. He is talented, sexy and rich - everything I love in a man. He may be a little self satisfied but so would I be in his shoes.

Shakey1500 Sun 13-Oct-13 14:13:14

I've always liked him, comes across as a decent, family orientated bloke. Nary a whiff of scandal about him and how refreshing these days.

Also, my parents took DS to Blackpool to see the lights being turned on his year. According to them the celeb originally booked to turn them on let them down at the nth hour. Gary Barlow agreed to do it at short notice free of charge, just asked for a donation to Children in Need.

UriGHOULer Sun 13-Oct-13 14:42:37

I like him. I think he's calm. Very zen.

UriGHOULer Sun 13-Oct-13 14:43:45

Shakey...and a private go on the pleasure beach for him and his friends....allegedly!

valiumredhead Sun 13-Oct-13 14:51:26

He's hugely talented and looks mighty fine, what's not to like?wink

AnaisHellWitch Sun 13-Oct-13 14:54:32

I've just watched the Olympic closing ceremony performance just after he lost his baby daughter. Feeling very weepy at the way the others are looking out for him. He can't be a bad chap, surely.

VulvaVoom Sun 13-Oct-13 14:57:23

Oi! Stop slagging of my 2nd husband (1st one currently laying on the sofa - oblivious)

(Future) Mrs Barlow

Irishmammybread Sun 13-Oct-13 14:58:30

DD had surgery in hospital last year .On a noticeboard we saw photos taken by staff of Gary visiting the hospital and spending time with the kids. There had been no hype, no publicity, nothing had been in the paper, just a celeb doing something really nice in his own time for a group of sick children for no personal gain. It certainly impressed me.

moldingsunbeams Sun 13-Oct-13 15:12:19

I have met him on a few occassions and he has been nice enough but come across a bit boring. However when we went somewhere and he was off camera for a couple of hours he was actually quite witty and funny.

HaroldLloyd Sun 13-Oct-13 15:16:14

I like him. He comes across as a nice straight forward man.

And I fancy him a little bit.

He talks like a creature comforts turtle and I like it!

Bowlersarm Sun 13-Oct-13 15:18:35

What's not to like? He made it, lost favour, had the balls to make it work again.

He's a faithful family man, he suffered a stillborn child. Where's your compassion?

He has it all, IMO.

KirjavaTheCorpse Sun 13-Oct-13 15:23:27

He talks like a creature comforts turtle and I like it!

Not bothered by him either way, in the slightest. Maybe if I watched x-factor I'd get what you mean.

However, I have an passionate, unreasonable hatred for this guy. confused

sonlypuppyfat Sun 13-Oct-13 15:24:11

What do you mean where's my compassion I wouldn't wish that on anyone, but whats that got to do with hating his music and his smug face.

Nanny0gg Sun 13-Oct-13 15:30:21

I never liked Take That either. I really like music you see

What was that about smug?
And in this case, also supercilious.

Perhaps your 'like' doesn't appeal to others?

LazyGaga Sun 13-Oct-13 15:38:39

All these Gary lovers - where were they during the wilderness years eh? The Heartbeat era when he couldn't get arrested?

Never heard anyone saying they loved him then wink.

Never been into Take That, don't watch X Factor, have no opinions on him either way.

mrsjay Sun 13-Oct-13 15:47:28

Gary is on his way to become the new sir Paul mcartney he will be singing Greatest day at opening ceramonies (sp) in years to come you have been warned grin

FreudiansSlipper Sun 13-Oct-13 15:57:43

I get quite ragey when his songwriting is compared to Lennon/McCartney

he has written a few ok pop songs but tries too hard to write power big songs

And agree he is a very dull pop star, seems a nice guy but dull

Plus a tax dodger --and supported Tories in the election-

HaroldLloyd Sun 13-Oct-13 16:23:36

During the wilderness years I spent my days wandering the streets with my I Love Gary placard.

mrsjay Sun 13-Oct-13 16:28:33

aww harold grin

I don't mind him and i think him doing an impression of himself on Xfactor is funny I am a bit hmm at his up and coming concert I have seen advertised of him just singing Take that songs

valiumredhead Sun 13-Oct-13 16:29:07

I wish he'd learn how to pronounce 'performance' thoughwink

mrsjay Sun 13-Oct-13 16:30:02

I haven't noticed valium I will watch tonight and see what that is all about,

mirry2 Sun 13-Oct-13 16:35:46

I once saw a documentary of him in his home which was huge with a massively long drive. It was the first time I realised how mega rich these singers and TV celebs are. It's another world.

GatoradeMeBitch Sun 13-Oct-13 16:36:19

I like some of his songs, I love 'Patience', but he is so boring on X Factor.

In fact he helped me break my X Factor habit because I couldn't bear to listen to him any more. He's not an irritant like Cowell or Cole, he's just drony and dull.

DumDum32 Sun 13-Oct-13 16:37:29

oh no u guys r being unreasonable Gary has earned his rightful place on X factor. I grew up in the Take That, Boyzone & Backstreet Boys Era & although I was a more a Backstreet Boys followed closely by Boyzone fan I liked Take That songs too. Intact if my school Frieds came across this thread there would be a lot disapproval comments grin

valiumredhead Sun 13-Oct-13 16:42:31

We'll forgive Mrs jaywink especially as he looks SO good with a few grey hairs

mrsjay Sun 13-Oct-13 16:44:09

I Think he is aging much better than robbie williams who knew Robbie just looks Bleurgh these days

GatoradeMeBitch Sun 13-Oct-13 16:45:39

Gary has been a joke since the Frankie Cocozza debacle. It's not a genuine talent contest, I doubt anyone still believes that, it's a soap opera. It doesn't matter what his credentials are, he still has to say what the producers tell him to say!

DumDum32 Sun 13-Oct-13 17:01:15

agreed mrsjay grin

UsedToBeNDP Sun 13-Oct-13 17:04:36

He is utterly beige. Meh, meh and meh again. So long as you avoid brain rotting cack like X craptor, life will roll along beautifully, fragrantly, epically GB-free.

UsedToBeNDP Sun 13-Oct-13 17:06:34

Mrsjay, Robbie lost it in about 1993. He's been a bloated disaster area ever since. Arrogant turd.

(And I LOVED 'old' TT)

PrimalLass Sun 13-Oct-13 17:07:58

He is a raging Tory though, which does put me off.

valiumredhead Sun 13-Oct-13 17:08:45

Is he??shock

Oh. That puts a whole new slant on thingsangry

Thants Sun 13-Oct-13 17:10:14

He's a talentless, tax dodging, Tory and he's on X factor... I can't see what anyone would like about him.

youarewinning Sun 13-Oct-13 17:17:50

Personally don't know him, won't judge him by X factor as It's not RL! I thought he was quite funny when bantering with (was it Joe?) last year. Always seemed down to earth type to me, and has done lot's in his time but as someone said ^^ it's not always published. I loved the song he did with the Commonwealth band and Military Wives.

Me2Me2 Sun 13-Oct-13 17:21:55

I'm not really minded to love or hate him. But I do dislike it when he and other judges comment on acts or singers being 'the full package' or referencing their look. GB made it on talent alone. Why aren't people allowed to anymore?
Almost all the final 12 this year seem extraordinarily talented to me this year but it's quite predictable who'll get booted.

Me2Me2 Sun 13-Oct-13 17:23:23

A bit off topic. sorry!

valiumredhead Sun 13-Oct-13 17:29:29

No GB didn't mange it on talent alone, they all had distinctive looks that were 'manufactured' to appeal to the masses.

BasilBabyEater Sun 13-Oct-13 17:29:34

I instantly dislike anyone rich who is too greedy to pay taxes tbh.

EvaBeaversProtege Sun 13-Oct-13 17:29:46

I love GB!!!!

I was an original TT'er & adored him from the beginning.

Last yr dh surprised me with tickets to his solo gig & we had an absolute ball!!! He was lovely, genuinely nice & came across as a guy id love to have on my side.

He thanked the audience for coming, said he knew the tickets & parking & ice-cream @ half time meant an expensive night out, but said he was very grateful - he even apologised to the husbands who had been 'dragged' along, saying he'd had to take his wife to see Michael Buble so could sympathise.

Leave him alone.

TrueStory Sun 13-Oct-13 17:33:37

I have watched him for a nano second. A whole nano second wasted.

valiumredhead Sun 13-Oct-13 17:36:40

I'm distraught he's a Torysad

Dull. His songs are dull. He makes me want to fall asleep.

He reminds me of Val Doonican (jumper-wearing middle of the road singer, for those of you not ancient like me!) except Mr B is, as has been pointed out, full of his own self-importance and is smug too. And I hate his accent, sorry, and especially the way he says "You done brilliant."(It's 'brilliantLY', Gaz.)

Apart from that he's OK grin

everlong Sun 13-Oct-13 17:54:44

You loathe him?

You don't know him.

Save your loathing for a real twat.

valiumredhead Sun 13-Oct-13 17:55:00

He's a Torysad

Me2Me2 Sun 13-Oct-13 17:57:13

valium GB got into TT because he's a good musician and can sing. Whereas jason and howard, I'm guessing, were in it more for looks and dancing.
From there the group was styled

I didn't love TT that much at the time (though we did watch their dance vid every lunch break at school...) but now when I look back on them and hear the songs I think they were totally brilliant.

needaholidaynow Sun 13-Oct-13 17:58:32

Gary Barlow is just beautiful. And doable.

thebody Sun 13-Oct-13 18:00:14

I think he seems a nice person.

valiumredhead Sun 13-Oct-13 18:01:47

They were totally brilliant me

UsedToBeNDP Sun 13-Oct-13 18:03:10

PMSL @ "and supported the Tories in the last election"

It's not illegal to vote Conservative, you know hmm

valiumredhead Sun 13-Oct-13 18:08:07

It bloody should be!

everlong Sun 13-Oct-13 18:11:04

I've just watched the closing song from the Olympics.

How anyone isn't touched by that after he just lost his daughter is beyond me.

SO brave.

And the boys looking at him sad

I like him.

Not a fan I'm afraid, he's in the same realm as Cliff and Macca for me.

Thants Sun 13-Oct-13 18:18:30

Everlong that made me sad for his wife hmm
I think tax dodging is morally repugnant. He is a multi million yet cares more about his own wealth than contributing to society. He doesn't do anything positive for culture or society so at least his wealth should be going into the nhs, police, benefits etc.

BasilBabyEater Sun 13-Oct-13 18:35:41

Yep, sorry, I think tax dodging is morally repugnant as well.

There is something so very tacky about obscenely rich people being too greedy and entitled to pay taxes. Horrible.

everlong Sun 13-Oct-13 18:41:29

Yep tax evasion is wrong obviously.

But I can feel something for him on the basis his daughter died.

BasilBabyEater Sun 13-Oct-13 18:55:46

I can only feel sympathy for him, as I would for anyone who suffered a personal tragedy like that. But sympathy isn't fandom and it doesn't change his status as a tax-dodger.

DumDum32 Sun 13-Oct-13 19:31:36

oh I didn't know about the daughter, that's made me feel sad for him/his wife sad

I didnt realise he was a tax avoiding Tory either angry

Hmmm but at least it does confirm that if u don't like Gary it's not that hard to avoid hearing/watching him!
Loathe is a strong emotion though for those of u who said that hmm

ThePuffyShirt Sun 13-Oct-13 19:34:08

He is so dull inoffensive I would struggle to either like or dislike him.

He is the definition of meh.

AnaisHellWitch Sun 13-Oct-13 19:44:12

I had forgotten about the raging Tory / tax dodging stuff and I think I remember some Jamie Oliver-esque comments about how anyone can pull themselves up by the bootstraps blah blah

As I posed about that performance earlier and I feel sorry for anyone who has lost a child. I even feel sorry for David Cameron in this respect but it doesn't stop me loathing his policies, some of which I do believe border on criminal to whoever said that voting conservative isn't a crime.

It's a "meh" from me as well, Gary, I'm afraid grin

AnaisHellWitch Sun 13-Oct-13 19:44:41

posted <sigh>

everlong Sun 13-Oct-13 19:57:59

I wouldn't wish a child's death on my worst enemy.

Of course people should show him empathy.

everlong Sun 13-Oct-13 19:58:39

That goes for DC too.

AnaisHellWitch Sun 13-Oct-13 20:00:23

everlong flowers Same here.

nextyearitsbigschool Sun 13-Oct-13 20:49:25

I love him, he's talented, gorgeous, makes good use of his fame by getting involved with charity work quietly and without fanfare. He's also private and I love how his wife and children are never photographed and paraded infront of the media, allowing them a normal childhood unlike many other celebs. I remember an interview which I think was with Jonathan Ross who was interviewing him and Will Smith. He asked Will Smith what his children are doing now and Will launched into a full description of his childrens show is credentials. He asked GB and he said "going to school, she has exams soon".

CloverkissSparklecheeks Sun 13-Oct-13 20:50:45

I love him - I am 34, I also adore Take That! I also like 'proper' music but for some reason I cannot forget my teenage crush of the whole of Take That.

CloverkissSparklecheeks Sun 13-Oct-13 20:52:11

I also think he is more gorgeous now that he was in Take That years ago!

CloverkissSparklecheeks Sun 13-Oct-13 20:53:30

The song he sang at the Olympics closing ceremony was heart breaking. I sobbed all the way through it as my SIL was due the same day as his wife was and I was terrified about the whole thing.

AnaisHellWitch Sun 13-Oct-13 20:55:24

I was quite surprised when he first appeared on X-Factor by how stern he was. It was a little bit sexy, I have to say. I'd always thought of him as the geeky but clever one who can't dance.
