To think this is the most offensive band name

In the pub I bumped into some people I knew from school days and haven't seen in 15+ years one was telling me he'd set up his own record label, which I though was great, then he took off his hoodie and reviled the latest band merchandise. The band was called "cot death" WTAF!! I must have looked shocked/appalled and I said I didn't think it was an appropriate name, after a quick exchange of cross words in which he said he thought I "used to be cool" we parted company and avoided each other for the rest if the night. Is this offensive?

quoteunquote Sun 22-Sep-13 19:11:56

Of corse it is, it's meant to be, was he particular thick at school?

phantomnamechanger Sun 22-Sep-13 19:13:57

I thought it might have the c word or something misogynistic.......not expecting THAT level of crassness, bleurgh and shock

fluffyraggies Sun 22-Sep-13 19:16:01

God how old is he?

As a youngster it may seem cool and subversive - as an adult - mixing with other adults who may well have been devastated by a cot-death, he's being a wanker to think it's still ok.

Kids get away with it 'cos they're kids.

No. That's disgusting.

Nora2012 Sun 22-Sep-13 19:16:29

He wasn't thick. I know this is some kind of attention seeking thing, but we should have all grown out of that now. He ha

JCDenton Sun 22-Sep-13 19:17:36

I opened this thread thinking that there's no way it could beat 'Anal Cunt' but fair play, you've found worse.

Nora2012 Sun 22-Sep-13 19:17:51

He's 30! And had a really lovely set of parents, I think his dad died, a few years ago but that's not an excuse.

pigletmania Sun 22-Sep-13 19:28:29

I initially thought it would be something like The Retards, but this takes the Busicuit angry

FeckOffCup Sun 22-Sep-13 19:31:03

He is a wanker. Hopefully his record label will be short lived if he doesn't wise up and stop trying so hard to be offensive/controversial.

Well his band is not going to go far with that name, so he might think they are edgy and controversial but they're just a bit stupid and sad really.

ILetHimKeep20Quid Sun 22-Sep-13 19:34:24

It's edgy and contraversial if you were 13

ICameOnTheJitney Sun 22-Sep-13 19:35:44

Reminds me of the not so nicely named "Cradle of Filth". It's an old and boring shock tactic....

Reminds me of the band of a guy I went to uni with his band was PSV which stood for putrid stinking vaginas. I thought that was awful but yours tops it.

Nora2012 Sun 22-Sep-13 19:45:42

I get the whole shock factor as (misplaced/poorly judged) means of marketing but surely there's no way it could work and it just made me want to shake some sense into him. What's wrong with some people.

KatyTheCleaningLady Sun 22-Sep-13 19:55:26

I clicked on this thread thinking it would be "Dying Fetus." I like that band but would never wear one of their shirts because I'd hate to upset someone who'd suffered a miscarriage.

GetStuffezd Sun 22-Sep-13 19:58:00

What a dick. Reminds me of a terrible, terrible online date I went on once where the bloke told a truly awful joke involving sex with a baby really loudly in a quiet pub. People looked over shocked; I was absolutely mortified.
Some folk are just incredibly dense.

MoveYourArmsLikeHenry Sun 22-Sep-13 19:58:14

Horrible, disgusting name. My sister died from cot death and I don't find this name amusing at all, be the band members 13 or 73.

KatyTheCleaningLady Sun 22-Sep-13 19:58:38

The name wouldn't hurt the band's chances of success if the genre ws death metal or some other genre where such names are common.

StuntGirl Sun 22-Sep-13 20:04:11

Well I doubt they're a cheery pop band, so the name likely suits the genre. Some extreme metal bands have horrible names, it's part of the genre.

Nora2012 Sun 22-Sep-13 20:07:04

Jeez Katy is that a band name too? I just don't understand why, whatever the genre. Stuff, no second date then? Ha

StuntGirl Sun 22-Sep-13 20:10:48

You're not meant to get it Nora smile It's meant to offend and appall you.

JamieandtheMagicTorch Sun 22-Sep-13 20:13:02

Does he think he's a rocker?

Twatty offensive shock-value name

Nora2012 Sun 22-Sep-13 20:14:24

Mission accomplished stunt?!? Maybe he's right and I did used to be cool. Now I feel how my mum must have when in was trying to explain why I loved nirvana!

PinkFairyArmadillo Sun 22-Sep-13 20:17:34

It's the one thing in certain genres to try and come up with the most shocking and/or offensive name possible.

Even as a teenager, heavily into various forms of black metal, I remember being rather uncomfortable with a band called Zyklon-B.

JamieandtheMagicTorch Sun 22-Sep-13 20:17:36

You don't have to be cool at 30. grin

JamieandtheMagicTorch Sun 22-Sep-13 20:17:57

... it's one of the great things about being over 30, IMO

StuntGirl Sun 22-Sep-13 20:19:44

It's ok not to like the name, it doesn't make you cool/not cool or whatever. He's a bit silly to get offended at you being offended when that was the desired outcome...

I dont think its cool to say cool any more wink

KatyTheCleaningLady Sun 22-Sep-13 20:22:17

For some reason, the names don't bother me. It's all part of the... fun. The extreme metal stuff has a sort of purposely OTT sense of humour. Sort of "What is the most offensive thing imaginable? Hee! " And the people in that scene are the nicest people you could imagine. The event staff at Bloodstock festival (Dying Fetus headlined this year) all said that it's their favourite festival to work because everyone is so polite and friendly.

Nora2012 Sun 22-Sep-13 20:22:59

Jamie, I doubt I ever was cool to be fair, but you're right I don't need to feel bad about it post 30. My cool level isn't helped by me now singing "Jamie, Jamie, Jamie an his magic torch"

MrsOakenshield Sun 22-Sep-13 20:26:08

not surprised he set up his own label as I can't imagine any established label would touch a band with that name. What a twat.

swampytiggaa Sun 22-Sep-13 20:29:58

What's wrong with cradle of filth? Btw the guitarist from there runs our local music shop....

Nora2012 Sun 22-Sep-13 20:30:43

Katy I don't doubt that they are nice people who listen to this music, don't want to stereotype about people's music choice. But it just seems an offensive band name and his surprise at my offence was strange. Just seems unduly insensitive.

picnicbasketcase Sun 22-Sep-13 20:31:52

I thought it might be Anal Cunt too. But no, this is far more offensive.

blush I don't understand the Cradle of Filth reference either. Mind, I was more a Bluetones/Shed Seven sort of girl. grin

heidihole Sun 22-Sep-13 20:36:31

Wow. I was not expecting that. Came on the thread thinking it'd be "Billy and the Cunts" or something and was going to say 'each to their own'

But wow. I'm not usually offended and I'd be slack jawed at that!

KatyTheCleaningLady Sun 22-Sep-13 20:41:50

MrsOakensheild, there are several established labels that sign bands with offensive names.

satsumagirl Sun 22-Sep-13 20:46:16

Who the feck names their band that? It's awful. Anyway, I suspect they will have to change their name sharpish should they become successful. Twats.

kali110 Sun 22-Sep-13 20:49:58

Why is cradle of filth bad?swampy where is your music shop? I may have to take a trip!

cocolepew Sun 22-Sep-13 20:52:28

What a Twat. I used to go to our local college for a night class and they had a poster up for a band called
The Kiddie Fiddlers hmm I tore it down then went and complained.

swampytiggaa Sun 22-Sep-13 20:53:58

North devon Kali. I was surprised when my friend told me - have chatted to him whilst buying guitar strings etc. It was suggested i approached him for lessons for ds.

Nora2012 Sun 22-Sep-13 20:57:07

Is kiddie fiddlers a band of children violinists and this is a horrid mistake?

PinkFairyArmadillo Sun 22-Sep-13 21:05:16

swampytiggaa Current guitarist or ex? I still lust after one of them like a horny teenager blush

swampytiggaa Sun 22-Sep-13 21:09:50

Not sure pinkfairy. Although i like metal cradle of filth never really popped onto my radar. Will ask my informant when i see her at the school gates smile

SignoraStronza Sun 22-Sep-13 23:06:26

YABU. There are some far more offensive/equally offensive band names than/as that. DH is just giving me the lowdown...

Dying Fetus
Anal Cunt
Alabama Thunderpussy
Children of Bodom (Not Boden, MNrswink )
Rotting Christ
Canival Corpse's tracks "Entrails ripped from a virgin's cunt" and "Stripped, raped and strangled".

I could go on and on and on. Schlock horror!

Strangly enough (as someone mentioned upthread), metal festivals, such as Bloodstock, Wacken and Damnation, are some of the safest and most chilled out festivals around. The bands might seem scary, but are usually quite lovely (and often extremely geeky) and everyone really does look out for each other. The blokes are some of the least misogynistic men I know and metalheads make awesome husbands, partners and fathers.

I might think it all sounds rather grim (and the aim is to shock) but is usually nigh on impossible to understand the grunting lyrics anyway.

SignoraStronza Sun 22-Sep-13 23:07:58

...apart from Cradle of Filth, who are a bunch of twats well, Danny anyway.

lottiegarbanzo Sun 22-Sep-13 23:18:11

None of those gory names bother me, they suggest adults referencing horror films featuring other adults messing about. That's quite different from the cold, matter of fact reference to such a sad, quiet tragedy. There's no pantomime 'horror' there, just sadness.

DanglingChillis Sun 22-Sep-13 23:33:55

Liking the idea of a metal band called Children of Boden. Singles include 'Death by Applique' and ''Hotchpotch Horror'.
